Chapter 2 - THE MAFIA BOSS FOUND HIS NURSE COLLAPSED BESIDE A FROZEN ROAD—AND THE SECRET HIDDEN IN HER MEDICAL NOTEBOOK EXPOSED A TRAITOR INSIDE HIS OWN HOUSE

The storm erased the road.

Snow swept across the windshield in thick white sheets.

Raphael sat in the back of the armored SUV, gripping Evelyn's broken necklace so tightly that the metal pressed into his palm.

Everett Shaw drove.

Two security vehicles followed.

No one spoke.

***

Twenty minutes earlier, Raphael had ordered every available security camera along the estate road checked.

The final image showed Evelyn walking away from the gates.

Her head lowered.

One arm wrapped around her coat.

Then the cameras lost her in the snow.

***

"She couldn't have gone far," Everett said.

Raphael stared through the windshield.

"Keep driving."

***

They found her near a service road.

At first, Raphael thought the dark shape beside the guardrail was a fallen branch.

Then the headlights caught a pale hand.

"Stop."

Everett braked.

Raphael was already reaching for the door.

***

The cold struck him like a wall.

He transferred into his wheelchair with Everett's assistance and rolled toward the guardrail.

The snow was too deep.

His wheels sank.

He stopped.

And saw her.

***

Evelyn lay on her side beside the road.

Her hair was covered in snow.

Her lips were pale.

One hand clutched the strap of her canvas bag.

***

"Elena—"

He caught himself.

"Evelyn."

No response.

***

Everett hurried forward.

He checked her breathing.

"She's alive."

Raphael's chest tightened.

"Get her into the vehicle."

***

They lifted her carefully.

Wrapped her in blankets.

And drove toward the nearest emergency department.

***

Raphael sat beside her.

Her hand felt frighteningly cold.

He looked at her face.

The woman who had spent months helping him survive his worst days was now unconscious because he had refused to listen.

***

At the hospital, physicians treated Evelyn for hypothermia and exhaustion.

Raphael waited outside her room.

For hours.

***

At three in the morning, a doctor approached.

"She's stable."

Raphael exhaled.

"Can I see her?"

"When she's ready."

***

He nodded.

For once, he did not argue.

***

By sunrise, Evelyn was awake.

Raphael entered only after a nurse told him she had agreed to see him.

***

She lay against white pillows.

A warm blanket covered her legs.

Her face was pale.

But her eyes were clear.

***

Raphael stopped beside the bed.

"Evelyn."

She looked at him.

"Why are you here?"

He swallowed.

"Because I was wrong."

***

She said nothing.

He continued.

"I should have listened."

"Yes."

"I should never have sent you outside."

"No."

***

Her voice was quiet.

But the words struck harder than any accusation.

***

Raphael looked down.

"I'm sorry."

***

Evelyn studied him.

Then whispered:

"Do you know what hurt most?"

He shook his head.

"Not the cold."

Her eyes filled.

"Not losing my job."

***

She swallowed.

"It was looking at you and realizing you believed I was capable of hurting you."

***

Raphael closed his eyes.

***

For months, Evelyn had treated him with patience.

Respect.

And kindness.

And he had repaid her with suspicion.

***

He looked up.

"I don't expect you to forgive me."

"Good."

***

He nodded.

"But I want to understand what happened."

Evelyn looked toward the window.

Then said:

"Celeste lied."

***

Raphael's expression hardened.

"About what?"

"Almost everything."

***

She reached toward the bedside table.

"My notebook."

Raphael frowned.

"What?"

"My medication notebook. It's in my bag."

***

He opened the bag.

Found the small blue notebook.

And handed it to her.

***

Evelyn turned to the final pages.

There were dates.

Times.

Medication dosages.

And handwritten observations.

***

Raphael recognized his treatment schedule.

Then noticed something strange.

Several entries were marked with red ink.

***

"What is this?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"Your medication was being changed."

***

Raphael stared.

"By whom?"

"I don't know."

***

She continued.

"Three weeks ago, I noticed that one of your prescriptions didn't match the physician's order."

***

Raphael's jaw tightened.

"How different?"

"Enough that I contacted the prescribing physician."

***

He looked at her.

"What did they say?"

"They hadn't authorized the change."

***

Silence.

***

Evelyn continued.

"I started checking everything."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I tried."

***

Raphael remembered.

Three weeks earlier.

Evelyn had asked to speak privately.

He had been in a meeting.

Celeste had interrupted.

And Raphael had told Evelyn to wait.

He had forgotten.

***

Evelyn looked down.

"Then I found something else."

***

She turned another page.

A copied signature.

A pharmacy authorization.

And a note.

***

Raphael recognized the signature immediately.

Grady Mercer.

***

His face went cold.

"Where did you get this?"

"From the medical records office."

***

She swallowed.

"The man in the photographs was helping me verify the prescription."

***

Raphael stared at her.

"He's a pharmacist?"

"Yes."

***

For several moments, Raphael said nothing.

Then he asked:

"Why didn't you tell Celeste?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"Because Celeste was the one who brought the altered medication into the house."

***

The room went silent.

***

Raphael looked toward the door.

Then back at Evelyn.

"Are you certain?"

"No."

***

She shook her head.

"That's why I was investigating."

***

Raphael studied the notebook.

The dates.

The signatures.

The inconsistencies.

***

Then he understood.

Someone had been interfering with his recovery.

***

Not necessarily to kill him.

Something more calculated.

To keep him weak.

Dependent.

And easier to control.

***

Raphael closed the notebook.

"Thank you."

Evelyn looked at him.

"For what?"

"For not giving up when I refused to listen."

***

She shook her head.

"Raphael, I didn't do this for gratitude."

"I know."

***

Her eyes filled.

"I did it because you're my patient."

***

He looked down.

Then whispered:

"And I treated you like an enemy."

***

Evelyn said nothing.

***

Outside the hospital, snow continued falling.

Inside, Raphael Castellano made a decision.

***

He would investigate.

He would cooperate with the authorities if crimes had been committed.

And he would never again allow Celeste Whitmore to speak for him.

***

But first, he had to do something far more difficult.

***

He had to learn how to earn back the trust of the woman he had hurt.
