Chapter 2 - The Rising Out of the Deep Blue Depths, the Mafioso’s Terrifying Wrath, and the Unmasking of the ViperDante Moretti did not run. Men like Dante did not panic. When the impossible happened, their movements simply accelerated into terrifying, absolute efficiency.

When the splash echoed from the private dock, Dante had been concluding his discussion with the federal judge regarding the port acquisition contracts. The moment he heard Elena’s name choked off beneath the surface, the federal judge was left standing alone as Dante discarded his suit jacket, kicked off his Italian leather shoes, and dove headfirst off the stone pier without a moment’s hesitation.

The cold water was dark, but Dante’s instincts cut through the murkiness. He swam downward, his powerful strokes propelling him toward the pale pink fabric sinking slowly into the murky depths. He caught Elena around the waist, hauled her unconscious, waterlogged body upward, and broke the surface of the lake, gasping for air.

By the time Dante dragged her onto the wooden planks of the dock, two security guards and several horrified guests had rushed to the water's edge. But nobody dared touch Dante as he knelt beside her, pressing his palms hard against her chest in a desperate rhythm of CPR.

“Come on, Elena. Breathe. Open your eyes,” Dante muttered, his voice cracking with a raw, terrifying panic that nobody in the underworld had ever witnessed from the ice-cold syndicate king.

With a sudden, violent gasp, Elena coughed up a torrent of water, her dark eyes flying open in sheer terror as she choked and shivered violently against the wooden boards.

Dante immediately wrapped his arms around her, pulling her wet, trembling body against his chest, shielding her from the sea of staring guests. He slowly lifted his head, turning his slate-grey eyes toward the shore. The temperature around the lake seemed to drop twenty degrees.

Standing near the edge of the stone balustrade, trembling slightly despite her best efforts to maintain a haughty expression, was Bianca Vitali.

“Dante... thank goodness you saved her,” Bianca forced a tight, brittle smile, stepping forward and fluttering her eyelashes. “The clumsy girl must have tripped over her own feet and fallen in. It’s a tragic accident, really. The staff should be more careful.”

Silence descended upon the entire gardens. The quartet stopped playing. The guests stepped back, clearing a wide, terrified radius around Dante Moretti.

Dante slowly stood up. He didn't take off his wet shirt. He didn't wipe the lake water from his face. He looked like an executioner rising from the underworld. He walked step-by-step toward Bianca until he towered over her, his imposing frame blocking out the afternoon sun.

“An accident,” Dante repeated softly. His voice was so quiet it barely carried, yet every single person on the lawn could hear the lethal promise vibrating beneath it.

“Yes, darling! She tripped—!” Bianca started, before her voice caught in her throat under the weight of Dante’s dead, unblinking stare.

“Security,” Dante commanded without breaking eye contact.

Four armed men materialized instantly from the crowd, flanking Bianca so aggressively she stumbled backward into a stone planter.

“Detain her. Lock her in the basement security holding cell,” Dante ordered, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, unyielding death. “Nobody speaks to her. Nobody gives her water. And if she moves an inch, shoot her in the leg.”

“Dante, you can’t do this to me! I am your fiancée! My father is Senator Vitali! You’ll start a civil war with the commission!” Bianca shrieked, her mask of elegant composure entirely shattering as the guards grabbed her by the arms and dragged her kicking and screaming across the manicured lawn.

Dante didn't even watch her leave. He turned back toward the dock, where Elena was being helped to her feet by Sophie and a trembling event coordinator, wrapped in a thick wool blanket.

Dante strode back over to Elena, ignoring the dripping water pooling around his shoes. He knelt down before her, taking her cold, trembling hands in his warm, powerful grip.

“Are you hurt?” Dante demanded, his eyes scanning her pale face with an intensity that made her breath catch.

“I... I’m okay, Mr. Moretti,” Elena whispered, her teeth chattering slightly from the cold. “Just... cold.”

“You are never, ever to call me that again,” Dante said fiercely, his thumb gently brushing a damp curl away from her forehead. He turned to his head of security, who stood nearby at attention. “Get a medical team up from the clinic immediately. And then... bring me the security footage from the west dock camera.”

Within ten minutes, the private security monitor was set up in the mansion’s study. Dante sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his wet shirt clinging to his broad shoulders, watching the playback on a high-definition screen.

The camera angle captured the private dock with crystal-clear precision. It showed Elena kneeling quietly to pick up three rose petals. Then it showed Bianca Vitali walking up behind her with calculated, stealthy steps, raising her hands, and delivering a deliberate, malicious shove that sent Elena plunging into the deep water.

Dante watched the footage three times in complete silence. Each time, the fury in his chest burned hotter, crystallizing into a cold, ruthless certainty. Bianca hadn't just tried to humiliate a servant; she had attempted to murder the woman who held the entire functioning heart of Villa Moretti in the palm of her hand.

He closed the laptop. It was time to settle accounts with the Viper.
