Chapter 4 - The Siege of Highland Park

Automatic gunfire shattered the silent winter night, echoing across the snow-dusted grounds of the Cavali estate.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

Haley screamed, dropping to her knees as the heavy glass windows of the study rattled from the thunderous concussions outside.

In a fraction of a second, Vincent was in motion.

He reached under his desk, pulling out a heavy tactical shotgun, and racked the slide with a terrifying, metallic CLICK. He grabbed Haley by the arm, hoisting her effortlessly to her feet, and shoved her toward the reinforced panic door hidden behind the bookshelf.

"Get upstairs!" Vincent ordered, his voice echoing like thunder. "Get Theo and lock yourselves inside the East Wing safe room! Do not come out until I come for you!"

"Vincent, no!" Haley cried out, her terror for her son instantly mixing with a sudden, suffocating panic for the man standing before her. "They're going to kill you!"

"They can try," Vincent snarled, a cold, lethal grin splitting his face. "Now go!"

He slammed the panic door shut behind her, engaging the heavy electronic locks, before turning to face the hallway.

Outside, the estate grounds had descended into a war zone. Searchlights cut through the falling snow, illuminating dozens of armed men in dark coats pushing toward the grand front entrance. Tracers carved bright red lines through the darkness, shattering the crystal chandeliers in the foyer and sending rain-like showers of glass down upon the marble floor.

Vincent stepped out of his study into the grand foyer, leaning his shoulder against a thick stone pillar as three of Falcone's gunmen burst through the heavy mahogany front doors.

Without hesitation, Vincent raised his shotgun and fired.

BOOM!

The heavy lead slug hit the lead gunman full in the chest, lifting him off his feet and throwing him back out into the snow. Vincent racked the slide and fired twice more in rapid succession, dropping the second and third attackers before they could even raise their weapons.

"Advance on the left flank!" Silas screamed over the radio, leading four Cavali security guards down the grand staircase, their suppressed submachine guns barking wildly.

For fifteen minutes, the Highland Park estate became a battlefield. Falcone had sent twenty of his most ruthless mercenaries to launch a surprise night raid, hoping to burn the Cavali house to the ground and slaughter everyone inside.

But Dominic Falcone had severely underestimated the fortress Vincent Cavali had built.

The estate's security team fought with military precision, pushing the attackers back across the lawn, pinning them against the iron perimeter fence.

Vincent moved through the smoke and shattered glass like an unstoppable shadow, his shotgun roaring, clearing room after room with cold, merciless efficiency. He didn't feel fear. He didn't feel hesitation. He only felt a roaring, white-hot instinct to eliminate every single threat that dared step near the woman and child hidden upstairs.

By the time the gunfire finally ceased, the snow on the front lawn was stained crimson. Twelve of Falcone's men lay dead in the snow; the remaining eight had fled into the surrounding woods, hunted down by Silas's team.

Silence returned to the estate—a thick, heavy silence broken only by the crackle of burning bushes near the driveway and the breathing of exhausted men.

Vincent lowered his smoking shotgun, wiping a smear of blood from his cheek with the back of his hand.

He turned around, ignoring the body of a hitman lying near the marble fountain, and headed straight for the grand staircase. He took the steps three at a time, his heart pounding in his chest—not from the adrenaline of the firefight, but from a desperate, frantic need to see Haley and Theo.

He reached the East Wing safe room door, punched in the six-digit security code, and yanked the heavy steel door open.

Inside, the room was dimly lit.

Haley was sitting in the corner, huddled against the wall, clutching little Theo tightly to her chest. The baby was crying softly, frightened by the noise, while Haley wept silently, her face pale as a ghost.

When the door opened, she looked up, her green eyes wide with horror.

When she saw Vincent standing in the doorway—covered in soot, blood, and gunsmoke, but alive—a choked sob escaped her throat.

She didn't hesitate. She scrambled to her feet, holding Theo in one arm, and threw herself directly into Vincent's chest.

Vincent dropped his shotgun onto the carpet, wrapping his heavy arms tightly around her waist, pulling her and the baby against his body. He buried his face in her dark blonde hair, inhaling the clean, sweet scent of her, feeling her body shaking violently against his.

"You're safe," Vincent whispered raspy against her ear, his voice rough with emotion. "It's over, Haley. You're safe."

"I thought you were dead," Haley wept, burying her face in his neck, her hands clutching his dark wool sweater with desperate strength. "I was so scared..."

Vincent pulled back slightly, cupping her cheeks in his large, calloused hands, wiping her tears away with his thumbs. He looked down at her face, reading the pure, unconditional relief in her eyes.

He didn't care about the war with Falcone. He didn't care about the Commission or the New York bosses. In that single, breathtaking moment, Vincent Cavali realized that he would burn the entire city of Chicago to ash before he ever let anyone hurt this woman or her child.

"Look at me, Haley," Vincent commanded softly.

She looked up, her green eyes locking onto his dark gaze.

"Nobody touches you," Vincent swore, his voice an absolute, unbreakable vow. "Nobody touches your boy. From this night on, you belong to me. And I will protect you until my last breath."

Haley didn't pull away. She nodded softly, pressing her cheek against his hand, accepting his protection, his heart, and his dark, dangerous world.
