Chapter 3 - The Collapse of the Brooks Dynasty

The executive boardroom of Brooks International Real Estate smelled of polished mahogany, expensive espresso, and unearned arrogance. Nathan Brooks leaned back in his leather ergonomic chair, swirling a glass of single-malt scotch as he stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Wall Street.

Two days had passed since the incident at the grocery store, and Nathan had spent forty-eight hours convincing himself that Gabriel DeLuca was merely a passing storm—a dangerous mobster who would quickly lose interest in a penniless clinic worker once the novelty wore off.

“Nathan,” his father, Arthur Brooks, barked as he strode into the boardroom with a thick stack of financial printouts in his hand, his face pale and slick with cold sweat. “What in God’s name have you done?”

Nathan frowned, swirling his drink. “Dad, relax. It’s just some small-town drama with an ex-girlfriend who—”

“An ex-girlfriend?!” Arthur slammed the papers down onto the mahogany table so hard the crystal glasses rattled. “Our municipal development contracts for the entire downtown transit hub were just terminated by the city zoning board twenty minutes ago! All three venture capital firms backing our harbor expansion just pulled out simultaneously, citing sudden compliance violations! And our primary commercial lender just called in our thirty-million-dollar debt note due today!”

Nathan sat bolt upright, the color draining from his face. “That’s impossible. Our financing was locked in for six months! Who could do that?”

“Who do you think, you arrogant idiot?!” Arthur shouted, grabbing his son by the lapel of his designer suit and shaking him. “You threatened someone belonging to the DeLuca family! Every bank, every investor, and every judge in this city just turned their backs on us because Gabriel DeLuca whispered a single word!”

Panic flared hot and sharp in Nathan’s chest. He grabbed his phone from the desk, frantically dialing Jessica’s number, hoping against hope that her family’s political connections could shield them.

The phone rang twice before a cold, mechanical automated voice answered: “This number is no longer in service.”

He dialed his office line. Nothing. He opened his corporate email portal, only to watch in stunned horror as his inbox flooded with resignation letters from his top vice presidents, asset freeze notifications from federal regulators, and a single, unread message from an encrypted sender bearing a single file attachment: a high-resolution photograph of him standing outside the grocery store, pointing a finger at Claire, with a bold red timestamp reading 0.4 seconds before impact.

“Pack your bags, Nathan,” Arthur whispered, collapsing into a chair, looking ten years older than he had ten minutes prior. “We’re ruined.”

Meanwhile, miles uptown in the sunlit, secure atrium of the DeLuca estate, Claire sat sipping chamomile tea while reviewing patient intake logs for the community clinic she now managed remotely via a secure encrypted tablet.

Gabriel walked out onto the stone patio, holding a small, velvet-lined jeweler’s box in his hand. He set it gently on the glass table beside her teacup.

“What’s this?” Claire asked, raising an eyebrow suspiciously.

“A peace offering,” Gabriel said, sitting down in the chair opposite her and resting his arms on the table. “And a formal correction of a five-month-old oversight.”

Claire slowly opened the box. Inside rested a magnificent, custom-designed engagement ring featuring an emerald-cut pink diamond surrounded by a delicate halo of white sapphires—a ring so breathtakingly rare it looked like something stolen from a royal collection.

“Gabriel, I told you, I’m not playing society games,” she said, though her heart fluttered traitorously against her ribs.

“This isn't a society game, Claire,” Gabriel replied, his voice dropping into a register so tender and absolute it made her breath hitch. “This is me putting my entire empire, my name, and my life at your feet. Nathan Brooks filed for corporate bankruptcy this morning after his family’s assets were systematically liquidated. Jessica left him at his apartment complex an hour ago. He will never, ever come within a hundred miles of you again.”

Claire stared at him, stunned. “You destroyed his entire family business over a grocery store argument?”

“I destroyed his business because he raised his voice to my wife and threatened my child,” Gabriel corrected smoothly, leaning forward to take her hand in his. “In my world, certain trespasses carry a permanent price. But for you, Claire... I would burn down every skyscraper in Manhattan if it meant keeping you safe.”

Claire looked down at the ring, then up into the fierce, unwavering devotion shining in Gabriel’s dark eyes. The fear that had driven her away five months ago finally dissolved into nothingness, replaced by the staggering realization that she wasn't hiding anymore.
