Chapter 3 - The Syndicate’s Retaliation, the Final Showdown on the Black Rocks, and the Reign of the Obsidian King and His QueenThe attack on Ravenscliff was only the opening salvo.

Within forty-eight hours, Nicholas Cade’s intelligence network uncovered the full scope of the conspiracy: the Providence syndicate, led by a ruthless arms dealer named Vincent Rossi, had bribed a high-ranking member of Cade’s domestic staff in a desperate attempt to assassinate the Obsidian King and seize control of the lucrative northern shipping lanes.

Rossi didn't know he had just signed his own death warrant.

Over the following week, the atmosphere inside Ravenscliff transformed from a place of quiet mourning into an armed fortress preparing for war. But amidst the tension, something extraordinary happened between Nicholas and Ruby.

The forbidden barrier between the west wing and the rest of the house quietly vanished. Nicholas began joining Ruby and Lilia for dinner in the grand dining room. He watched with a quiet, fierce joy as Lilia’s laughter slowly returned, coaxed out by Ruby’s bottomless patience and warmth. And late at night, after Lilia was safely tucked into bed, Nicholas would find Ruby in the library, holding her close, whispering secrets he had never shared with anyone else.

He learned about her childhood, about her small apartment above the laundromat, and about the cruel, casual insults Grant had hurled at her on the night of her friend’s wedding.

When Nicholas heard about Grant, his jaw had tightened into a block of granite, and his slate-grey eyes had turned black with lethal intent.

“Give me a name,” Nicholas had murmured dangerously against her hair. “By morning, he’ll wish he’d never learned how to speak.”

Ruby had gently pressed her fingers against his lips, smiling softly. “No, Nicholas. Some men aren't worth the bullets. He’s small, and he’ll stay small. I don't need you to destroy him. I have everything I need right here.”

That loyalty—fierce, unyielding, and entirely genuine—cemented Ruby’s place not just in Ravenscliff, but in the cold, guarded heart of the Obsidian King.

The climax arrived on a bitterly cold Friday night exactly two weeks after the initial breach.

Vincent Rossi, realizing his assassination attempt had failed and his smuggling routes were being systematically dismantled by Cade’s syndicates, made a desperate, suicidal miscalculation: he launched a full-scale armed assault on Ravenscliff, bringing three boats ashore at the base of the black rock cliffs beneath the estate.

The alarms blared through the granite halls at 2:00 a.m.

Ruby woke instantly, pulling Lilia into the reinforced safe room built beneath the nursery, locking the steel door securely. But as she heard the distant pop of suppressed gunfire echoing up from the cliffs, a cold terror gripped her heart.

Nicholas was out there.

Up in the west wing and across the grounds, Cade’s elite security enforcers engaged Rossi’s mercenaries in a brutal, coordinated firefight. But Rossi, desperate and cornered, managed to bypass the perimeter guards and slipped through the conservatory doors, hunting specifically for the heart of the Obsidian King.

Nicholas was waiting for him in the grand library.

As Rossi kicked open the mahogany doors, holding a submachine gun, Nicholas stood by the fireplace, pouring a glass of scotch with absolute, terrifying calm.

“You’re a hard man to kill, Cade,” Rossi sneered, raising his weapon. “Let’s see how you handle a full magazine at point-blank range.”

Before Rossi could pull the trigger, the library door swung open behind him.

Ruby stood in the doorway. She had slipped out of the safe room, refusing to hide while the man she loved fought for his life. In her hands, she held a heavy 12-gauge shotgun she had retrieved from the estate’s secure armory—a weapon she had learned how to handle during her brief, forgotten stint volunteering at a rural hunting lodge years ago.

“Drop the gun, Rossi,” Ruby’s voice rang out crystal clear, cold, and absolute.

Rossi spun around in shock, laughing derisively. “What’s a fat little nanny going to do with a shot—?”

He didn't finish the sentence.

BANG.

Ruby pulled both triggers. The massive kickback nearly knocked her off her feet, but the double-barrel blast caught the floor tiles inches from Rossi’s boots, sending a shower of ceramic shrapnel shredding across his shins.

Rossi screamed in agony, stumbling backward.

That microsecond of distraction was all Nicholas Cade needed.

In a blur of motion, Nicholas closed the distance, grabbed Rossi by the throat, and slammed him headfirst through a mahogany bookshelf, shattering the wood into a thousand splinters. Rossi slumped unconscious onto the floor, completely neutralized.

The library fell into profound, dead silence.

Nicholas stood over the unconscious syndicate boss, his chest heaving, before slowly turning his head to look at Ruby.

She stood there, holding the smoking shotgun, her heart pounding against her ribs, looking like an avenging angel wrapped in a cardigan.

Nicholas let out a long, ragged breath, crossed the room in two strides, and ripped the heavy shotgun out of her hands, tossing it carelessly aside. Then he grabbed her by the waist and pulled her flush against his chest, capturing her lips in a fierce, desperate, bruising kiss that tasted of gunpowder and raw, overwhelming relief.

“I told you to stay in the safe room,” he murmured roughly against her mouth, though his arms held her as if she were the most precious thing on earth.

“I’m not a decoration, Nicholas,” Ruby panted, smiling up at him with unshakeable defiance. “I told you that too.”

A slow, breathtaking smile broke across the Obsidian King’s face—a smile of absolute surrender and absolute victory.

Two months later, the Providence syndicate was a distant, forgotten memory. Vincent Rossi was serving a life sentence in a federal supermax prison, and the shipping lanes along the Maine coast were entirely under Cade’s secure, benevolent control.

On a crisp, sunlit morning in spring, the black rock cliffs of Ravenscliff were surrounded by blooming wildflowers and the sparkling, endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean.

In the grand courtyard, beneath an archway of white roses, Nicholas Cade stood waiting in a tailored charcoal suit.

And walking down the stone aisle toward him, holding little Lilia’s hand as the little girl scattered flower petals along the path, was Ruby Calloway.

She wore a stunning, elegant ivory lace dress that hugged her curves with effortless grace, her brown eyes shining with unshed tears of pure joy. She didn't feel small anymore. She didn't stand at the edge of the frame.

She stood at the absolute center of the world, hand in hand with the most feared man in New England, who looked at her as if she were the only light in his universe.

As Nicholas slid a platinum band onto her finger, pulling her close for a tender, passionate kiss while the guests applauded, Ruby finally understood the truth.

She hadn't just found a job.

She had found a king who knew her true worth, and a fortress where she would never, ever have to make herself small again.
