Chapter 2 - The Secret Laptop in the Backpack, the Seven-Year-Old Genius, and the Digital Audit That Shook the UnderworldWhile Dr. Sterling—the Rossi family’s private physician—applied antiseptic to Skylar’s split cheek and wrapped her bruised jaw in cold compresses in the estate’s private clinic, Dominic stood outside in the hallway, his phone pressed tightly against his ear.

“Marcus,” Dominic’s voice cut through the receiver like a razor blade. “The wedding is off. Don't bother calling my office to negotiate. If you or any of your associates try to pull your shipping contracts, I will personally release the forensic tax audits my father left me regarding your port smuggling operations in Brooklyn. We are done.”

Before Marcus Moretti could sputter a single threat from the other end of the line, Dominic clicked the phone dead and tossed it onto the mahogany side table. He rubbed the bridge of his nose, the heavy stress of the evening settling into his broad shoulders. He had expected retaliation from the Moretti family; Marcus was a desperate, vicious man who didn't lose face easily. What Dominic hadn't anticipated was the phone call he received twenty minutes later from his head of corporate security, Vance.

“Boss, you need to see this,” Vance said, his voice tight with an urgency that immediately made Dominic’s instincts flare. “We checked the staff quarters after the incident in the conservatory. We were looking to see if Bianca’s associates had left a recording device. Instead, we found something in Skylar Gallagher’s locker.”

Dominic frowned, stepping out of the clinic hallway. “What kind of something?”

“A high-end, military-grade encrypted laptop, a satellite relay router, and a series of financial hard drives containing every transaction ledger, offshore shell company account, and encrypted communication log belonging to Marcus Moretti’s entire criminal syndicate.”

Dominic stopped dead in his tracks. “Explain.”

“Boss, Skylar Gallagher isn't just a clumsy maid from Albany,” Vance explained rapidly. “Her father wasn't just a sick worker. Her late father was Thomas Gallagher—the lead federal financial cyber-investigator who mysteriously vanished five years ago right before he was set to indict Marcus Moretti. And Skylar... she didn't stumble into our estate by accident eleven months ago. She infiltrated it.”

A cold, heavy knot formed in Dominic’s stomach. “Is she an operative? Is she working for federal intelligence?”

“No, Boss. That’s the wild part,” Vance said, lowering his voice. “According to our institutional background check update, she doesn't work for the feds. But she does have a seven-year-old son named Leo, who is currently staying with her sister in a modest apartment in downtown Albany. And Leo... Leo is a self-taught, prodigy-level white-hat hacker who spent the last three years breaking through Marcus Moretti’s encrypted financial network, downloading every dirty secret he owns, and hiding the payload inside his mother’s work backpack.”

Dominic stared down the empty hallway, the pieces of the puzzle snapping into place with terrifying speed. Skylar hadn't taken the job at the Rossi estate for the high wages; she had taken it because the Rossi family was Marcus Moretti’s primary commercial rival, and she needed powerful, dangerous allies to protect her and her son from the men hunting them for the stolen files. She had taken a brutal slap across the face to protect an elderly woman who couldn't defend herself, all while carrying enough ammunition in her apron pocket to blow Marcus Moretti’s entire empire straight to federal prison.

“Bring the laptop to my study immediately,” Dominic ordered. “And do not touch a single file.”

Back in the private clinic, Dr. Sterling finished wrapping Skylar’s jaw and packed his medical bag. “You’ll have a nasty bruise for a couple of weeks, young lady, and your cheek is going to be sore, but there’s no structural fracture. Just rest and soft foods.”

“Thank you, Doctor,” Skylar whispered, her voice still muffled by the cold compress.

Dr. Sterling patted her shoulder and left the room, closing the door behind him. Skylar sat alone on the sterile examination table, pulling her faded woolen cardigan tightly around her shoulders. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She knew the moment Vance and the security team searched her locker, her entire secret life would be exposed. She had kept her son Leo safe by hiding the encrypted drives in the one place nobody would ever suspect—inside the heavy, chaotic clutter of a clumsy maid’s workspace. But now that Dominic Rossi knew the truth, he would either hand her over to Marcus Moretti to appease the family, or he would eliminate her himself to protect his own syndicate’s security.

She swung her legs over the side of the table, ready to grab her coat and run into the night, when the door quietly opened.

Dominic Rossi stood in the doorway.

He had removed his tuxedo jacket, his white dress shirt open at the collar, looking like an executioner who had decided to skip the formalities. He closed the door behind him, locking the heavy brass latch with a decisive click.

Skylar froze, her breath catching in her throat. She gripped the edge of the examination table, her knuckles turning white. “Mr. Rossi... I can explain. I’m not a spy, I swear. I just... I needed to protect my son.”

Dominic didn't yell. He didn't rush across the room. He walked slowly toward her, his hands shoved deep into his trouser pockets, his dark eyes locked onto her pale, bruised face.

“Eleven months, Skylar,” Dominic said quietly, stopping three feet away from her. “For eleven months, you dropped trays, shattered crystal, bumped into every wall in this mansion, and played the part of the village idiot so convincingly that even my head housekeeper wanted to fire you twice a week.”

Skylar bit her lower lip, tears welling up in her eyes. “I had to stay under the radar. Marcus Moretti’s men have been looking for those files since my father died. If they knew I had them, they would have killed me and my seven-year-old boy before we reached the county line.”

“And yet, tonight,” Dominic continued, his voice dropping into a deeper, more intense register, “when Bianca raised her hand to strike my mother, you didn't run. You didn't protect yourself. You threw your body between a confused old woman and a vicious debutante, knowing it would blow your cover and put a target squarely on your back.”

Skylar looked down at her lap, her voice trembling. “Your mother... she was the only person in this house who ever treated me like a human being instead of a piece of furniture. She remembered my name when everyone else called me Penny. I couldn't just stand there and let her get hurt.”

Dominic stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. The cold, ruthless mafia boss—a man feared across the entire eastern seaboard—felt a foreign, crushing warmth expand inside his chest. He had spent his entire life surrounded by greedy associates, treacherous brides, and people who only loved him for his power and money. In front of him stood a woman who had endured physical abuse, poverty, and relentless mockery, carrying the weight of a federal war on her shoulders, simply because she possessed a heart too big for her own safety.

He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently touching the edge of the white gauze taped across her bruised cheek. Skylar flinched slightly, but didn't pull away.

“Your son, Leo,” Dominic said softly. “Where is he right now?”

Skylar’s eyes widened with sheer terror. “Leave him out of this! He’s just a little boy—!”

“He’s a seven-year-old genius who just hacked the most secure financial network in New York and handed me the keys to destroy Marcus Moretti once and for all,” Dominic interrupted, a faint, undeniable smirk touching the corners of his lips. “I don't want to hurt him, Skylar. I want to meet him. Because if he’s anything like his mother... he’s going to fit right in here.”
