Chapter 8

Graham was called to the witness stand on the third day,

and the courtroom was completely silent as he took the oath.

He looked directly at Elise with a mixture of pity and disgust,

and he recounted the phone call she made from the local jail.

He told the jury about her deep jealousy and her hidden rage,

and he confirmed that she had hit me on purpose that rainy night.

Elise’s defense attorney tried aggressively to discredit his harsh testimony,

and he accused Graham of lying to secure a favorable divorce settlement.

Graham remained perfectly calm and incredibly steadfast under the intense pressure,

and his raw honesty resonated deeply with every member of the jury.

The prosecutor then called the lead detective to the wooden stand,

and the detective presented the cell phone tower location data records.

The records proved Elise was at the exact location of the crash,

and they showed my father called the auto shop an hour later.

The digital evidence was a massive and completely devastating legal blow,

and my parents’ expensive lawyers looked incredibly defeated and very tired.

On the final day of the long trial, I was called to testify,

and I walked slowly up to the wooden witness box with my cane.

I looked at the twelve jurors sitting in the long wooden box,

and I took a deep breath to steady my rapidly beating heart.

I told them about the morning of the terrible and painful accident,

and I described the blinding headlights and the crushing heavy impact.

I told them about waking up in the bright and sterile hospital,

and I told them about Elise holding my hand and crying fake tears.

I described the three years of subtle cruelty and relentless gaslighting,

and I explained how they made me feel like a burdensome helpless child.

I told them about the dinner party and the walker on the floor,

and I described the exact moment the gray folder hit the table.

My voice did not shake once during the entire emotional testimony,

and I did not cry or show any signs of weakness to the room.

I was not a victim begging for pity from the judicial system,

and I was a survivor demanding the justice I rightfully totally deserved.

Elise finally broke down sobbing loudly at the defense table,

and she buried her face in her hands in complete total shame.

My mother covered her mouth to stifle a loud and sudden gasp,

and my father stared at the wooden floor in absolute sheer defeat.

The defense did not even try to cross-examine me on the stand,

and they knew any further questions would only make them look worse.

The closing arguments were delivered with intense and fiery powerful passion,

and the jury was sent out of the room to begin their deliberations.

Rowan held my hand tightly as we waited in the quiet hallway,

and Sarah brought us hot coffee from the small courthouse cafeteria.

The wait felt like it lasted for a thousand long and weary years,

and every tick of the clock echoed loudly in my tired brain.

But I knew I had done everything in my absolute human power,

and the rest was up to the truth and the scales of justice.
