Chapter 4 - The Brother Who Was Raised as a Weapon—And the Betrayal That Nearly Killed the Mafia Don’s WifeThe first explosion shook the chapel hard enough to send dust raining from the ceiling.

Elena stumbled.

Adrien caught her before she fell.

"Marco!"

"Working on the exit, boss!"

The steel door had locked automatically when the security system failed.

Above them, gunfire cracked across the courtyard.

Adrien pulled Elena behind a stone support.

Margaret crouched beside the desk, clutching Isabella's letter.

Another explosion rattled the floor.

"Who is attacking?" Elena demanded.

Adrien looked toward the speaker.

"Gabriel!"

Static.

Then a strained voice.

"Richard."

Adrien went still.

Gabriel continued.

"He sent another team. He never intended to negotiate."

"Where are you?"

"West tower."

"Can you get us out?"

A pause.

"Why should I?"

Adrien looked at Elena.

Then toward the letter in his hand.

"Because our mother wanted us to meet."

Silence.

Adrien's voice broke.

"And because I'm not letting her lose another son tonight."

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then the steel lock clicked.

Marco pulled the door open.

"Move!"

They climbed the stairs.

Outside, the estate had become a battlefield.

Security vehicles burned near the north gate.

Moretti guards took cover behind stone walls.

A black helicopter circled above the trees.

Adrien recognized the aircraft.

It belonged to Richard Sinclair's private aviation company.

"He's trying to erase everyone," Marco said.

Adrien looked toward the west tower.

A figure stood behind a broken window.

Gabriel.

For one brief moment, the brothers saw each other clearly.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

Then Gabriel disappeared.

"Get Elena to the medical convoy," Adrien ordered.

Elena seized his hand.

"You're coming with me."

"I have to find him."

"You don't even know whether he's on your side."

Adrien looked at her.

"No. But I know what happens if I leave him here."

Elena's eyes filled.

"Adrien, our baby—"

He placed his hand against her stomach.

The child moved.

His expression softened.

"I know."

"Then don't make me raise our daughter without you."

Adrien froze.

"Daughter?"

Elena nodded through tears.

"I was going to tell you tomorrow. The doctor confirmed it at my last appointment."

For a moment, the gunfire faded.

The explosions disappeared.

There was only Elena.

Their daughter.

And a future Adrien suddenly wanted more than any empire.

He pressed his forehead against hers.

"What's her name?"

Elena smiled sadly.

"I thought Isabella."

Adrien closed his eyes.

Then he kissed her.

Not like a mafia don claiming a wife.

Like a frightened man trying to memorize the woman he loved.

"I'll come back," he whispered.

"You'd better."

Marco guided Elena toward the waiting SUV.

Adrien turned toward the west tower.

But before he could move, a familiar voice called from the darkness.

"Adrien!"

Victoria Sinclair emerged from behind a damaged garden wall.

Her emerald dress was torn.

Blood stained one sleeve.

Adrien raised his weapon.

"How did you get here?"

"I followed your convoy."

"That was a mistake."

"My father is here."

Adrien's expression changed.

"Where?"

Victoria pointed toward the main house.

"He has a command room in the old library. He's been using the estate for years."

Adrien stared.

"How?"

"Your father gave him access."

The words made perfect sense.

Vittorio and Richard had been partners.

Richard had never lost his influence over the Moretti family.

He had simply hidden it.

Victoria began crying.

"I didn't know what he was doing. I thought tonight was supposed to humiliate Elena. He told me she was blackmailing our family."

Adrien looked at her reddened hand.

"The woman you slapped is carrying my daughter."

Victoria lowered her gaze.

"I know."

"Then whatever happens tonight, you will answer for what you did."

She nodded.

"I understand."

A bullet struck the stone wall behind them.

Adrien pulled her into cover.

"Move!"

They ran toward the mansion.

Inside, the corridors were dark.

Emergency lighting cast long red shadows across the walls.

Adrien knew every turn.

He had grown up here.

He remembered the hidden servant passage behind the portrait gallery.

The narrow staircase leading to his father's office.

The private elevator connecting the library to the underground garage.

For the first time, his miserable childhood became an advantage.

He led Victoria through a concealed doorway.

They emerged behind the library.

Voices carried through the wall.

Richard Sinclair was speaking.

"Gabriel has become a liability."

Another man answered.

"What about Moretti?"

"Kill him."

"And the wife?"

Richard paused.

"She knows too much."

Adrien's blood turned cold.

Richard continued.

"Make it look like the brothers destroyed each other. The pregnant woman dies in the crossfire. We inherit the companies through the emergency trustees."

Victoria covered her mouth.

Adrien looked at her.

She was shaking.

"That's your father," he whispered.

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

"I know."

Inside the library, Richard's voice grew impatient.

"Where is my daughter?"

Victoria stepped toward the hidden door.

Adrien grabbed her arm.

"Don't."

She looked at him.

"If he sees me, he'll stop."

"No. He'll use you."

Victoria swallowed.

For the first time in her life, she seemed to understand that her father's love had always come with conditions.

"I was just another piece on his board," she whispered.

Adrien did not answer.

He was already thinking about Elena.

About the convoy.

About the fact that Richard knew exactly where she was supposed to go.

Adrien reached for his radio.

"Marco, change the evacuation route."

Static.

"Marco?"

Nothing.

Then a voice answered.

"Too late."

Richard Sinclair.

Adrien's stomach dropped.

"Where is my wife?"

Richard laughed softly.

"Did you really think I'd spend twenty years building this plan just to let a nurse ruin it?"

Adrien's grip tightened.

"If you touch her—"

"Your father said the same thing about Isabella."

Richard paused.

"Look how that ended."

The radio went silent.

Adrien turned toward Victoria.

"Where would he take her?"

Victoria stared at him.

"I don't know."

"Think."

She closed her eyes.

Then she whispered, "The old maternity clinic."

Adrien froze.

"What clinic?"

"The one in Connecticut. My father owns it through a foundation."

The same clinic where Gabriel had been born.

The same place Isabella had fled.

Richard was bringing the story back to its beginning.

Adrien pulled out his phone.

One missed call.

Elena.

A voicemail.

He pressed play.

Her voice filled the corridor.

"Adrien, something's wrong. The driver isn't taking the highway. Marco is unconscious. I think someone—"

The message cut off.

Adrien felt the world narrow to a single point.

Elena.

Their daughter.

He turned toward the library door.

His expression became terrifyingly calm.

Victoria stepped back.

"Adrien?"

"Stay here."

He entered the library.

Richard Sinclair stood beside the fireplace.

He was sixty-two, silver-haired, elegantly dressed, and smiling.

"Adrien."

Adrien pointed his weapon.

"Where is she?"

Richard lifted his hands.

"Let's be civilized."

"Where is my wife?"

Richard sighed.

"Your father was always disappointed by your emotional attachments."

Adrien advanced.

"Answer me."

Richard's smile disappeared.

"She's being transported somewhere safe."

"For whom?"

"For the future of this family."

Adrien understood.

Richard did not simply want his companies.

He wanted his child.

A new generation of leverage.

Adrien's finger tightened.

Then a voice spoke behind him.

"Don't."

Gabriel stood in the doorway.

He held a pistol.

His face was pale.

His eyes moved between Adrien and Richard.

Richard smiled.

"My boy."

Gabriel did not return the smile.

"Did you order Elena taken?"

Richard's expression changed.

"Son—"

"Did you?"

"She's dangerous."

"She's pregnant."

Richard shrugged.

"So was Isabella."

The room went silent.

Gabriel stared at the man who had raised him.

"What did you say?"

Richard realized his mistake.

Too late.

Gabriel stepped closer.

"You told me Isabella died because Adrien ordered her killed."

Richard said nothing.

"You told me Adrien knew about me."

Silence.

"You told me he abandoned me."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Everything I did was for you."

Gabriel laughed bitterly.

"No."

He lowered his weapon slightly.

"You did it because you needed me to hate him."

Adrien watched his brother.

For the first time, he saw the frightened child beneath the anger.

Richard reached toward his desk.

Gabriel shouted, "Don't!"

A gunshot erupted.

Richard staggered backward.

His weapon fell to the floor.

Gabriel stood motionless, smoke rising from his pistol.

Richard collapsed against the fireplace, wounded in the shoulder.

Adrien rushed forward and kicked the weapon away.

"Call an ambulance," he ordered.

Gabriel stared.

"You're saving him?"

"He's going to stand trial."

Adrien looked at his brother.

"And he's going to tell the truth."

Gabriel lowered his head.

For the first time, the hatred in his eyes began to crack.

Then Adrien's phone rang.

Elena.

He answered immediately.

"Elena!"

A weak voice responded.

"Adrien?"

He nearly collapsed with relief.

"Baby, where are you?"

"I don't know. There's a building. A blue sign. I think it says Saint Catherine's."

Adrien turned toward Gabriel.

His brother's face changed.

"I know it."

Elena gasped.

"Adrien, they're coming back."

"Listen to me. Stay calm. We're coming."

"I love you."

His throat tightened.

"I love you more."

The call ended.

Gabriel stepped closer.

"I can get us there."

Adrien looked at him.

"Why would you help?"

Gabriel swallowed.

"Because she was right."

"About what?"

Gabriel's eyes filled.

"A man who loves his son doesn't turn him into a weapon."

For the first time, Adrien saw his brother instead of his enemy.

"Then let's bring my family home."

They left Richard under guard and drove through the night.

At Saint Catherine's, Elena had already made her own escape attempt.

She had managed to reach an empty examination room and lock the door.

Her phone battery was nearly dead.

Her stomach tightened with pain.

She pressed her hands against it.

"Please, sweetheart," she whispered. "Stay with me."

Outside, footsteps approached.

A man shouted for her to open the door.

Elena backed toward the window.

She had spent years working in hospitals.

She knew how to improvise under pressure.

She used the room's emergency alarm to draw attention toward the opposite corridor.

When the men rushed to investigate, she slipped into a supply room.

But her strength was fading.

A sharp pain gripped her abdomen.

She bent forward.

"No."

She reached for her phone.

One percent battery.

She dialed Adrien.

No answer.

Then she heard a familiar voice.

"Elena!"

Adrien.

She tried to call back.

But her voice failed.

The door opened.

Adrien rushed inside.

He caught her as her knees buckled.

"Baby?"

She gripped his shirt.

"Something's wrong."

His face went white.

Gabriel appeared behind him.

"There's an ambulance outside."

Adrien lifted Elena into his arms.

"Stay with me."

She looked up at him.

"Promise me something."

"Anything."

"Don't let this turn you into your father."

Adrien's eyes filled.

"It won't."

"Promise."

He kissed her forehead.

"I promise."

At the hospital, doctors rushed Elena into emergency assessment.

Adrien waited outside with blood on his shirt and terror in his eyes.

Gabriel stood beside him.

Neither spoke for a long time.

Finally, Gabriel said, "I thought you were a monster."

Adrien looked at him.

"Sometimes I was."

Gabriel swallowed.

"Are you going to kill me?"

Adrien shook his head.

"No."

"After everything I did?"

Adrien stared at the operating doors.

"Our mother asked me to save you."

Gabriel's voice cracked.

"And what do you want?"

Adrien looked at him.

"I want my brother."

Gabriel began crying.

For the first time in twenty years, neither man had to pretend he was invincible.

Then the doctor emerged.

Adrien stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

"Elena?"

The physician looked serious.

"Your wife is stable, but the pregnancy has been affected by the stress and physical trauma. We're monitoring her closely."

Adrien felt his chest tighten.

"And my daughter?"

The doctor hesitated.

"Her heartbeat is present. That's encouraging. But we need time to understand the risk."

Adrien closed his eyes.

He had survived bullets.

He had survived betrayal.

He had survived an empire built on violence.

But nothing had ever made him feel so helpless.

He entered Elena's room an hour later.

She lay beneath white blankets.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes opened when he approached.

"Adrien?"

He took her hand.

"I'm here."

She looked at his expression.

"The baby?"

"Still fighting."

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

Adrien pressed his forehead against hers.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For bringing this life to your door."

Elena squeezed his hand.

"You didn't choose what your father did."

"No. But I can choose what happens next."

She studied him.

"What are you going to do?"

Adrien looked toward the hospital window.

Beyond it, Manhattan glittered like a kingdom waiting to be conquered.

He had spent his life defending an empire.

Now he understood that the empire itself was the danger.

"I'm going to end it," he said.

Elena stared at him.

"The Moretti organization?"

"The criminal part. Every illegal operation. Every corrupt partnership. Every man who thinks my daughter is something he can own."

His voice grew steady.

"And I'm going to make sure Richard Sinclair faces justice."

Elena's eyes filled.

"Adrien—"

He kissed her hand.

"I can't change the man my father was."

May you like

He looked at her stomach.

"But I can change the father our daughter gets."
