Chapter 5

CHAPTER 5 — The Sterling Horizon

Six months later,

the vibrant autumn leaves were falling beautifully across the expansive gardens of the Sterling ancestral estate in Aspen.

I sat on the wide,

sunny terrace,

holding a perfectly brewed cup of my favorite,

exact brand of coffee,

watching the mountains glow in the morning light.

The dark purple bruise on my face had completely disappeared long ago,

leaving behind no physical trace of that horrific night,

only a deep,

unshakable sense of inner strength.

The legal battle had been swift,

brutal,

and entirely devastating for the Thorne family,

just as my grandfather had promised it would be.

Ethan had pled guilty to all charges of felony domestic assault and grand-scale corporate embezzlement,

receiving a non-parolable sentence of fifteen years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary.

His mother,

Beatrice,

was convicted as a primary co-conspirator in the financial fraud,

losing every single dollar,

every piece of jewelry,

and every fake friend she had ever possessed.

She was currently living in a tiny,

cramped public housing apartment on the outskirts of the city,

living off a meager government checks,

completely forgotten by polite society.

Their tech company had been completely liquidated,

its assets purchased for pennies on the dollar by Sterling Global Enterprises,

wiping the Thorne name permanently off the corporate map.

My grandfather walked out onto the terrace,

wearing a comfortable sweater,

a proud,

warm smile lighting up his weathered face as he looked at me.

"You look beautiful today,

Maya,

and more importantly,

you look completely at peace,"

he said softly,

kissing the top of my head before sitting down beside me.

"I am at peace,

Grandpa,"

I replied,

taking a slow sip of my coffee,

feeling the warmth spread through my chest.

"I spent so long trying to hide behind a simple life,

thinking it would protect me from the world's cruelty,

but I learned that true protection comes from standing in your own power."

"You are a Sterling,

my dear,

the blood of lions runs through your veins,

and you proved that to the entire world,"

the old man said fiercely,

clinking his mug against mine.

Later that afternoon,

I officially walked into the grand corporate headquarters of Sterling Global,

no longer the quiet,

submissive accountant hiding in a small office.

I wore a sharp,

tailored power suit,

my head held high,

as the entire board of directors stood up to applaud my arrival as the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer.

The safe in my old study was gone,

its contents now laid out proudly across the massive desk of my new penthouse office,

governing billions in assets.

I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the beautiful city below,

knowing that no one would ever dare to raise a hand against me again,

no one would ever mistake my silence for submission.

I was Maya Sterling,

I had survived the darkness of the Thorne estate,

and the bright,

May you like

glorious future ahead belonged entirely,

beautifully to me.
