Chapter 3 - The Traitor’s Confession, the Eradication of the Syndicate Threat, and the Underworld King’s Ultimate SanctuaryThe interrogation in the private basement security office of St. Jude Memorial lasted less than ten minutes.

Dr. Richard Alston didn’t possess the constitution to withstand the terrifying reality of an underworld boss whose infant son had almost been murdered. Within three minutes of being pinned against the concrete wall by Dominic’s lead enforcer, Alston was sobbing hysterically, confessing to every detail of the conspiracy.

It wasn't just a rogue doctor making a medical error.

The conspiracy reached deep into the hospital’s administrative board—and directly connected to the rival faction that had planted the bomb in Alessia Castiglione’s SUV three weeks earlier. The rivals wanted the Castiglione bloodline permanently eradicated; killing the infant heir while he lay helpless in an incubator was their final stroke of cowardly vengeance.

And Alston, drowning in six-figure underground gambling debts, had accepted a half-million-dollar wire transfer to execute the slow-motion murder.

“I didn't want to kill him!” Alston wept, his face pressed against the cold concrete. “They told me he was already premature, that he wouldn't survive anyway! They said it would look like natural malabsorption!”

Dominic stood over him, holding a stainless-steel pen between his fingers, his face carved entirely from granite. He didn't strike the doctor. Physical violence was too good for a man who preyed on a newborn child.

“You will write a full, sworn confession detailing every single individual involved in this hospital board and the rival syndicate,” Dominic commanded, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, freezing death. “Then, my men are going to escort you to a federal penitentiary where you will spend the rest of your natural life in solitary confinement. If you ever speak another word, your cell door will accidentally remain unlocked.”

Alston didn’t argue. He grabbed a pen and began frantically scribbling his confession across a legal pad.

Within two hours, the second half of Dominic’s swift, merciless justice was executed.

While federal marshals—acting on anonymous, ironclad tips provided by the Castiglione legal team—raided the homes of the corrupt hospital board members and the rival faction's safehouses, the seventh-floor NICU of St. Jude Memorial was thoroughly scrubbed, re-secured, and placed under the absolute, unyielding personal protection of Clara Hayes and Dominic’s elite guards.

The tainted TPN bags were replaced with pristine, laboratory-certified nutrition.

By Saturday morning, the miraculous turnaround everyone had prayed for finally materialized.

Inside the seventh-floor neonatal unit, the morning sunlight poured through the large windows, warming the sterile room.

Baby Leo—unburdened by the chemical poisons that had been draining his life away—lay peacefully inside his incubator. His breathing was strong, his skin tone had returned to a healthy pink, and as Clara reached through the porthole to check his vitals, the infant gripped her finger with a sturdy, determined grasp that made her heart swell with profound relief.

Standing beside her, looking through the glass with eyes that finally carried a glimmer of peace, was Dominic Castiglione.

He had changed out of his rumpled suit into a crisp black shirt, looking every bit the sovereign king of Chicago’s underworld—yet softened entirely around the edges whenever he looked at the nurse standing beside him.

“His weight is up six ounces this morning,” Clara announced softly, checking the digital monitor chart with a bright, genuine smile. “The malabsorption crisis is entirely gone. He’s gaining strength by the hour.”

Dominic turned his head, his dark gaze locking onto Clara’s face. The terrifying mafia boss reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently catching her hand, pulling it away from the incubator and holding it securely against his palm.

“He is alive because of you, Clara,” Dominic murmured, his voice rich with an intense, unyielding devotion. “You saw what the elite specialists refused to look at. You saved my son’s life... and you brought my soul back from the dead.”

Clara looked up into his striking, powerful face, feeling the undeniable, magnetic gravity of the man who had torn apart a hospital syndicate just to protect his child. All the professional boundaries she had tried so hard to maintain suddenly felt distant and meaningless.

“I promised you I wouldn’t let anything happen to him while he was under my care,” Clara whispered, her voice steady and brave.

A breathtaking, rare smile curved Dominic’s hard lips—a smile meant exclusively for her.

“Then I suppose it is a very good thing,” Dominic murmured, pulling her gently against his solid chest, “that I intend to keep you under my protection for the rest of our lives.”

Downstairs in the lobby, the city of Chicago continued its noisy, chaotic rush, completely unaware that the city’s most dangerous underworld king had just found his true queen in a hospital hallway. The nightmare was over, the traitors were in chains, and as Dominic held Clara and his healthy son against his heart, their unbreakable family was finally whole.
