Chapter 2 - The Mafia Boss Refused to Believe the Lies About His Chief of Staff—Then a Hidden Recording Revealed Who Planned to Destroy HerBy six the next morning, Chelsea had not slept.

She sat in Matteo's private office overlooking Central Park, surrounded by laptops, financial reports, and three empty cups of coffee.
The emerald dress had been replaced by black trousers and a cream sweater borrowed from the hotel's emergency wardrobe.
Her hair was tied into a loose knot.
Her makeup was gone.
She looked exhausted.
But her mind was sharper than ever.
Matteo entered carrying breakfast.
"Eat."
Chelsea didn't look up.
"I'm busy."
"I can see that."
He placed a plate beside her.
Eggs.
Toast.
Fresh fruit.
She frowned.
"Did you make this?"
He smiled.
"Do I look like a man who knows how to cook?"
She considered.
"No."
"Correct."
Despite herself, she laughed.
He sat opposite her.
For a moment, he watched her work.
Then said, "You haven't stopped since last night."
Chelsea continued typing.
"Neither have you."
"I'm not the one who had wine dumped over her in front of half of New York."
Her fingers paused.
The memory returned instantly.
The laughter.
The cold wine.
Chiara's smile.
Chelsea swallowed.
"I'm fine."
Matteo leaned forward.
"Chelsea."
She looked up.
"You don't have to be fine."
Something in his voice nearly broke her.
She looked away.
"I can't fall apart right now."
"Why?"
"Because if I do, they'll win."
Matteo was silent.
Then he said, "You don't have to earn the right to be hurt."
Chelsea stared at him.
He continued.
"Being humiliated doesn't make you weak. And taking a break doesn't make you less capable."
She looked down.
For years, she had built her identity around being useful.
Reliable.
Brilliant.
The woman who could solve problems nobody else understood.
Because if she was indispensable, perhaps people would overlook everything else.
But Matteo was asking her to be human.
And she didn't know how.
"I don't know how to stop," she admitted.
His expression softened.
"Then start with breakfast."
She looked at the plate.
Then at him.
Finally, she picked up her fork.
"Five minutes."
Matteo smiled.
"Progress."
The forensic investigation uncovered its first major clue at nine.
Gabriel entered with a laptop.
"We traced the altered financial schedule."
Chelsea straightened.
"Where?"
"An external workstation connected through a temporary access credential."
Matteo frowned.
"Whose credential?"
Gabriel hesitated.
"Yours."
Chelsea stared at him.
"Mine?"
He nodded.
"The system shows a login using your authorization token at 9:14 last night."
Chelsea's stomach tightened.
"That's impossible. I was in the ballroom."
Gabriel looked at Matteo.
"We know."
Chelsea frowned.
"How?"
Matteo answered.
"Because I was watching you."
She froze.
He seemed to realize how that sounded.
Then added, "You were standing near the west column when the orchestra started the second set."
Chelsea stared at him.
He remembered.
Not just that she attended.
But where she stood.
What she was doing.
The exact moment.
Her heart gave an uncomfortable little jump.
Gabriel cleared his throat.
"The hotel cameras confirm it."
Chelsea forced herself to focus.
"Then someone cloned my credentials."
Gabriel nodded.
"Likely."
She opened her security logs.
"Who had access to my workstation?"
Gabriel checked the report.
"Three people. IT administrator Marcus Vale. Chiara Edgerton. And Leonardo Romano."
Chelsea's expression hardened.
"Chiara requested access last week."
Matteo looked at her.
"For what?"
"She claimed she needed figures for the gala presentation."
Gabriel frowned.
"Did you give her access?"
"Read-only."
Chelsea opened the permissions record.
Then stopped.
Her stomach dropped.
The access level had been changed.
From read-only to administrator.
She stared at the screen.
"Someone elevated her permissions."
Matteo leaned forward.
"When?"
Chelsea swallowed.
"Tuesday."
The same day Chiara accompanied her to the boutiques.
The same day she humiliated her in the fitting room.
Chelsea closed her eyes.
It had all been planned.
The dress.
The insults.
The wine.
The stolen credentials.
She had been so busy trying to survive the humiliation that she hadn't seen the larger trap.
Matteo noticed her expression.
"Chelsea."
She looked up.
"This wasn't just about stealing money."
His eyes narrowed.
"What do you mean?"
"They wanted me blamed."
Gabriel nodded slowly.
"That would explain the forged authorization."
Chelsea continued.
"If the acquisition closed, the funds would disappear. The audit trail would point to me. I'd be accused of embezzlement."
Matteo's expression darkened.
"And if you protested?"
She laughed bitterly.
"Chiara had already spent months telling everyone I was unstable and obsessed with you."
Silence.
Matteo stared at her.
"What?"
Chelsea looked away.
"Nothing."
His voice sharpened.
"Chelsea."
She sighed.
"Chiara told people I had feelings for you. That I was jealous. That I wanted her position."
Matteo's expression changed.
"Did she?"
Chelsea nodded.
"She said I was desperate enough to sabotage the company if you rejected me."
Gabriel looked furious.
Matteo was silent for several seconds.
Then he asked quietly, "Did you ever tell anyone that?"
Chelsea stared at him.
"What?"
"That you wanted a relationship with me."
Her cheeks burned.
"No."
He nodded.
"Then she invented it."
Chelsea looked down.
"Yes."
Matteo's expression became cold.
"Good. That gives our attorneys another issue to investigate."
Chelsea stared at him.
He was angry.
Not embarrassed.
Not disgusted.
Angry that someone had used her feelings, real or imagined, as a weapon.
She didn't know what to do with that.
At noon, Gabriel brought another discovery.
A recording from the hotel's service corridor.
The audio was faint.
But clear enough.
Chiara's voice.
"Make sure she stays near the west column."
Leonardo answered.
"Why?"
"Because that's where the cameras have the best angle."
A pause.
Then Chiara laughed.
"Once she's crying in front of everyone, nobody will question why she made a mistake."
Chelsea felt sick.
The recording continued.
Leonardo asked, "And the transfer?"
Chiara replied, "Already scheduled. By the time Matteo notices, the money will be gone."
Matteo's face went completely still.
Gabriel stopped the recording.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Matteo said, "Preserve it."
Gabriel nodded.
"Already done."
Chelsea stared at the screen.
The voices.
The plan.
The casual cruelty.
It was all there.
Matteo looked at her.
"Are you all right?"
She laughed softly.
"No."
The answer surprised them both.
Chelsea continued.
"I'm angry."
Matteo nodded.
"Good."
She looked up.
"Good?"
"Anger is appropriate when someone tries to destroy your life."
Chelsea stared at him.
Then slowly nodded.
For years, she had swallowed every insult.
Every joke.
Every sideways glance.
She had convinced herself that being professional meant never reacting.
But perhaps professionalism didn't require silence.
Perhaps dignity meant refusing to accept cruelty as normal.
That afternoon, Matteo called an emergency board meeting.
Chelsea expected to remain outside.
Instead, he asked her to sit beside him.
The boardroom was filled with senior executives.
Several were members of the Romano family.
Others represented outside investors.
Leonardo sat near the far end of the table with his attorney.
His expression was smug.
Chelsea recognized that look.
He still believed he could survive this.
Matteo opened the meeting.
"Last night, someone attempted to divert three hundred million dollars from the Lucchese acquisition."
A murmur spread through the room.
Leonardo leaned back.
"Allegedly."
Matteo looked at him.
"Yes. Allegedly."
He turned toward Chelsea.
"Miss Hilliard."
She stood.
Her hands trembled slightly.
But her voice was steady.
"I've prepared a reconstruction of the transaction."
She connected her laptop to the screen.
The first slide showed the original acquisition structure.
The second showed the altered version.
The third showed the unauthorized payment route.
Chelsea explained every step.
The forged credentials.
The hidden formula.
The shell company.
The timing.
She did not raise her voice.
She did not insult anyone.
She simply presented the facts.
By the time she finished, the room was silent.
One director leaned forward.
"Miss Hilliard, are you saying the transfer was designed to bypass our internal controls?"
"Yes."
"And the authorization was forged?"
"Yes."
"Can you prove it?"
Chelsea displayed the audit logs.
"Independent specialists are verifying the records. But the available evidence shows my credentials were used while I was physically elsewhere."
Leonardo laughed.
"Convenient."
Chelsea looked at him.
"Very."
His smile faded.
She continued.
"Especially because the receiving company's documents list you as an authorized representative."
The room erupted.
Leonardo stood.
"This is a setup!"
Chelsea remained calm.
"Then you should welcome an independent investigation."
Matteo watched her.
A faint smile touched his mouth.
Leonardo looked toward him.
"You're going to believe her over your own blood?"
Matteo's expression hardened.
"I'm going to follow the evidence."
Leonardo slammed his hand against the table.
"She's manipulating you!"
Matteo stood.
"Sit down."
Leonardo froze.
Matteo's voice was quiet.
"Now."
Slowly, Leonardo sat.
The board voted to suspend him from executive duties pending investigation.
The acquisition remained on hold.
Independent auditors were appointed.
And Chelsea was authorized to coordinate the financial review.
When the meeting ended, she gathered her papers.
Her hands were still shaking.
Matteo approached.
"You were excellent."
She looked at him.
"I was terrified."
He smiled.
"That doesn't make it less impressive."
She laughed softly.
Then looked toward the empty boardroom.
"For the first time, I didn't apologize for taking up space."
Matteo's expression softened.
"Good."
That evening, Chelsea returned to her apartment in Brooklyn.
It was small.
Warm.
Filled with books.
Plants.
And framed photographs of her late father.
She kicked off her shoes and sank onto the sofa.
For the first time in twenty-four hours, she was alone.
The silence felt enormous.
She closed her eyes.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She hesitated.
Then answered.
"Hello?"
A woman's voice spoke.
"Miss Hilliard?"
"Yes?"
"You don't know me. My name is Evelyn Price."
Chelsea sat upright.
"How can I help you?"
"I used to work for Chiara Edgerton."
Chelsea's heart quickened.
"All right."
Evelyn hesitated.
"I think you need to know something."
"What?"
"Chiara wasn't working alone."
Chelsea felt cold.
"Who else?"
A pause.
Then Evelyn whispered, "Someone inside Matteo Romano's household."
Chelsea stared at the wall.
"What do you mean?"
Evelyn's voice trembled.
"Someone who has been feeding her information for months."
Chelsea swallowed.
"Who?"
Before Evelyn could answer, a loud noise sounded through the phone.
A door slamming.
Then a man's voice.
"Evelyn."
The line went dead.
Chelsea stared at the screen.
Her heart hammered.
She immediately called Matteo.
He answered on the first ring.
"Chelsea?"
"Someone inside your household is involved."
Silence.
Then his voice sharpened.
"Where are you?"
"Home."
"Lock your door."
She stood.
"Matteo—"
"Now."
Chelsea hurried toward the entrance.
But before she reached it, someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
She froze.
Then a familiar voice called through the door.
"Chelsea? It's Gabriel."
Relief flooded her.
She reached for the lock.
Then stopped.
Because Gabriel was Matteo's security chief.
A man with access to every schedule.
Every room.
Every private conversation.
And Evelyn had just warned her that someone inside Matteo's household was helping Chiara.
Chelsea stepped backward.
"Gabriel?"
"Yes?"
"Why are you here?"
A pause.
Then:
"Matteo sent me."
Chelsea's stomach tightened.
May you like
Because Matteo had been on the phone with her only seconds earlier.
And he had not mentioned sending anyone.
