Chapter 3

CHAPTER 3 — The Blueprint of a New Life
Three weeks passed in a blur of quiet productivity. The board of directors officially appointed me as the interim CEO while we restructured the company from top to bottom. I didn’t want to run the day-to-day operations forever; my true passion had always been product design and creative strategy, areas Ethan had forbidden me from pursuing because he claimed my place was at home hosting dinner parties for his investors. Now, I hired a brilliant female executive to take over the daily management, while I retained my controlling shares and assumed the role of chairperson of the board. My first official act was establishing a childcare subsidy program for all employees—a initiative Ethan had mocked years ago as a waste of company capital. “If they wanted to raise children, they shouldn't have chosen a corporate career,” he had told me back then with a cold shrug. Now, the employees praised the new policy with tears in their eyes, thanking me for creating a workplace that valued human dignity over ruthless greed. On a crisp Saturday morning, I packed a picnic basket, strapped Noah into his stroller, and walked down to the community park near my new home. The air smelled of damp earth and fallen leaves. Laughter echoed from the playground as children chased each other across the grass. I found a quiet bench beneath a sprawling oak tree, unrolled a soft blanket, and let Noah crawl around while I reviewed a portfolio of architectural designs for our company’s new headquarters. A shadow fell across the blanket. I looked up, expecting to see a dog or a passing parent. Instead, I saw Ethan. He looked hollowed out. His designer suit was rumpled, his hair was unwashed, and the arrogant swagger that once defined him was completely gone. He looked like a man who had been hollowed out by his own reflection. “Claire,” he said, his voice cracking slightly. “May I sit down?” I didn’t invite him, but I didn’t stop him either. He lowered himself slowly onto the edge of the park bench, staring down at his scuffed leather shoes. “Sloane cleaned out my personal savings account,” he murmured, staring blankly at the grass. “The day the accounts were frozen, she transferred every remaining dollar to an offshore account and vanished. I haven't heard from her since.” I remained silent, turning a page in my architectural portfolio. “I lost everything, Claire,” he whispered, a tear finally escaping his eye and cutting a wet trail down his unshaven cheek. “The apartment, the cars, the status… even my friends won't return my calls.” “You didn't lose everything, Ethan,” I said calmly, not looking up from my papers. “You just lost the illusion.” He flinched as if I had struck him across the face. “How can you be so cold?” he choked out. “After all the years we spent together… doesn't any part of you still care?” I closed the portfolio, set it gently on the blanket, and turned to look him directly in the eyes. “Ethan, do you remember our fifth anniversary?” I asked softly. He blinked, caught off guard. “You bought me a diamond necklace,” he stammered. “You loved it.” “I didn't love it,” I corrected gently. “I wore it because you told me it made you look successful when we attended your corporate galas. That same week, my grandmother was in the hospital, and I asked you to help me pay for her supplemental care. You told me we couldn't afford it because you needed to invest in a luxury watch to impress a potential client.” Ethan stared at me, his lips trembling. “You never told me how much her care meant to you,” he whispered defensively. “I told you three times,” I replied evenly. “You just weren't listening. You never listened to anything that didn't directly serve your ego.” He lowered his head into his hands, his shoulders shaking with silent, ragged sobs. Across the blanket, Noah crawled over, stopping a few inches away from Ethan’s shoes. Noah tilted his head, studying the crying man with innocent curiosity. Then, with the pure, unmalicious empathy of a child, Noah reached out a tiny hand and patted Ethan’s knee.
