Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Past

Mr. Henderson froze mid-sentence, his mouth hanging wide open like a fish out of water. The surrounding servers stared at the table in absolute disbelief, unable to process what they had just heard.
Marco Rossi slowly pushed his chair back and stood up. He was a broad-shouldered man, over six feet tall, with silver-streaked dark hair, a sharp jawline, and eyes that held the weight of a violent life. Yet, as he stepped around the wine-puddling table toward Emma, his movements were gentle, deliberate, and remarkably calm.
Emma instinctively backed up half a step, clutching her sleeping daughter tighter against her chest. "Mr. Marco... please... I didn't mean to—"
"Shh," Marco said gently, raising a hand. "It is just grape juice on silk, child. A shirt can be replaced in twenty minutes. A child's safety cannot."
He stepped closer, his dark eyes fixed entirely on little Sofia, who had stopped squirming and was now staring at the tall man with innocent, bright blue curiosity. Slowly, the feared syndicate leader extended one broad, calloused finger. Sofia instantly reached out with her tiny, chubby hand and wrapped her small fingers tightly around his thumb.
Marco let out a low, warm chuckle—a sound that sent a shockwave of disbelief through his two armed bodyguards standing behind him.
"She has a strong grip," Marco murmured softly, his eyes softening with an emotion that looked suspiciously like old, buried grief. "What is her name?"
"S-Sofia," Emma stammered out, wiping a stray tear from her pale cheek. "Her name is Sofia."
Marco’s broad frame visibly stiffened. For a split second, a look of profound, agonizing pain flashed across his dark eyes, so fast that Emma almost thought she had imagined it.
"Sofia..." Marco whispered the name as if it were a holy relic. He looked up from the baby and met Emma's frightened gaze. "How old is she?"
"Five months, sir. Her name is Sofia."
Marco nodded slowly, continuing to let the baby hold his finger. "And where is her father? Why is a young mother working forty-hour night shifts carrying a infant on her chest in a place like this?"
Emma swallowed hard, the humiliation of her life's circumstances burning in her throat. "He... he left us the moment I found out I was pregnant, sir. He took our savings. I don't have family in the city, and I can't afford a full-time nanny on my wages."
Hearing her words, Mr. Henderson stepped forward again, attempting to salvage his restaurant's reputation. "Mr. Marco, I assure you, this is completely against corporate policy! I am terminating her employment right now, and we will cover your meal entirely—"
Marco turned his head slowly. The gentle warmth in his eyes vanished in a microsecond, replaced by an arctic, lethal glare that made the manager instantly swallow his tongue and take three steps back.
"Did I ask for your corporate policy, Henderson?" Marco asked, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with a quiet authority that made the air in the room feel thin. "The girl made a mistake because she is exhausted, working to keep her child fed. If you fire her for being a devoted mother, I will personally buy this building tomorrow morning and make you the night-janitor."
Mr. Henderson’s face turned completely ghostly pale. "Y-yes, sir! Of course, Mr. Marco! She stays! She stays!"
Marco turned his attention back to Emma. He pulled a heavy leather wallet from his inner suit jacket pocket. Without even counting the bills, he pulled out a thick stack of crisp, hundred-dollar bills—at least five thousand dollars—and held them out toward Emma.
"Take this," Marco instructed softly.
Emma’s eyes widened in horror. She shook her head rapidly, backing away. "No! No, sir, I can't accept that! That's too much money! I broke your glass, I ruined your shirt—"
"Take it," Marco commanded, though his tone remained surprisingly gentle. "Consider it a tip for the excellent service. Buy your daughter proper food, clothes, and a safe place to sleep tonight."
Before Emma could argue further, Marco gently placed the stack of cash directly into the front pocket of her server apron. He looked down at little Sofia one last time, gently stroking the baby's soft cheek with the back of his thumb.
"I will be returning to this restaurant tomorrow night at eight o'clock," Marco said, looking directly into Emma’s eyes. "I expect my regular table to be prepared, and I expect you to be my personal server. Do you understand, Emma?"
"Y-yes, Mr. Marco," Emma whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Thank you... thank you so much."
Marco offered her a brief, enigmatic nod, turned on his heel, and gestured to his bodyguards. Without ordering any food, the feared mob boss walked out of L’Étoile, leaving the entire restaurant—patrons, servers, and manager alike—standing in utter, paralyzed shock.
Emma stood near the shattered glass, her hand resting over the thick stack of bills in her apron pocket, her mind racing with a million terrifying questions.
