Chapter 2

Yet, Adrian had made one fatal calculation: he thought I was just a dependent wife who survived on his credit cards and emotional scraps. He forgot that before we married, I was corporate restructuring analyst specializing in forensic auditing and high-stakes asset retrieval. During our five years together, while he was busy expanding his empire, I had quietly managed the compliance audits for several of his secondary logistics firms. I knew where the offshore accounts were hidden, which municipal permits were tied to shell corporations, and how his private shipping routes functioned.
On the third night, my laptop screen illuminated the dark hotel room as I accessed an encrypted ledger I had archived months ago—a digital vault containing records of questionable real estate acquisitions and political kickbacks tied directly to the Russo Foundation.
My phone buzzed violently against the nightstand. An unknown number.
I swiped to answer.
"Claire," Adrian’s voice echoed through the speaker, low, dangerous, and trembling with suppressed fury. "You have exactly two hours to get back to the penthouse. Do you have any idea what kind of chaos you’ve caused? The board is asking questions, my security teams are scouring the city, and you are playing a very dangerous game."
I let out a cold, humorless laugh. "Chaos, Adrian? I’d call it redecorating. The penthouse felt a bit too crowded with your mistress’s ghost lingering in the hallways."
"Hannah is a client whose family needed protection!" he shouted, the smooth veneer finally cracking. "You don't understand the pressures I face! Come home, Claire. Let’s talk about this like adults before you force me to find you myself."
"Let’s see if you can," I whispered fiercely, and terminated the call.
I didn't waste a second. I forwarded a comprehensive package of the forensic audit files to a trusted investigative journalist at the New York Chronicle, complete with documented proof of illegal port allocations and corporate tax fraud. If Adrian wanted to play dirty, I was ready to burn his pristine public reputation to the ground.
