Chapter 1

CHAPTER 1 — THE SILENCE OF THE SHADOWS

The line crackled with a sterile, terrifying efficiency.

"We are three minutes out, Elena," the voice said.

I kept the phone pressed against my ear, hidden beneath my hair.

Julian’s face shifted from amusement to a flicker of genuine confusion.

He didn't know what 'Sterling Response' was.

He thought he had stripped me of my allies.

He thought he had isolated the heiress.

"Who are you talking to?" he barked, his voice losing its controlled, 'golden boy' edge.

He lunged forward to grab the phone, his face twisted in a snarl.

I scrambled backward, my heels dragging across the cold, unforgiving marble.

My ribs screamed in protest as I moved.

"Stay away from me," I gasped, the pain making my vision blur at the edges.

Selina took a step back, her confidence wavering as the reality of the situation dawned on her.

She wasn't a partner in this power grab; she was just an accessory to a crime.

"Julian, stop it," she hissed, her voice trembling.

"Fix this, or we’re both finished!"

He didn't hear her.

He was obsessed with the device in my hand.

"Give me that phone!"

He reached for me, his fingers grazing my shoulder.

But before he could make contact, the sound of a distant, low thrum vibrated through the house.

It wasn't a police siren.

It was the sound of a private security detail, one that operated outside the jurisdiction of local law enforcement.

My grandmother’s legacy was not just wealth.

It was an untouchable, invisible wall of protection.

The lights on the mansion's exterior suddenly flooded the garden.

Julian froze, his hand suspended in mid-air.

"What is that?" he whispered.

I looked up at him, my eyes burning with a cold, hard resolve.

"That is the end of your life as you know it, Julian."

CHAPTER 2 — THE ARRIVAL OF THE ELITE

The heavy oak doors of the mansion didn't just open; they were breached.

Men in tactical gear, moving with the silent precision of shadows, flooded the kitchen.

They were not police officers.

They were the Sterling elite, the private guard tasked with protecting the bloodline.

The leader of the unit knelt beside me, his eyes scanning me for injuries.

"Ma'am, you are safe," he said, his voice calm and professional.

He didn't look at Julian.

He didn't need to.

He treated him like an intruder, a pest to be cleared.

Julian stood rooted to the spot, his mouth agape.

"You can't do this!" he shouted, his voice cracking.

"This is my house! I am the CEO of Thorne Real Estate!"

The security leader stood up slowly, facing him.

"You are a suspect in a felony assault, sir," he said, his tone devoid of emotion.

"And as of thirty seconds ago, all your access to the Sterling estate and properties has been revoked."

Selina tried to slink toward the back door.

"Miss Vance," the guard called out without turning.

She stopped, frozen in her tracks.

"The legal team has your file. You are not going anywhere."

I felt a wave of relief so powerful it made me dizzy.

I gripped the guard's arm, my knuckles white.

"My baby," I whispered, the fear returning.

"Please... check my baby."

The medic was already by my side, moving with a gentleness that Julian had never possessed.

As they hoisted me onto a stretcher, I caught a glimpse of Julian.

He was being forced to his knees.

His golden exterior was finally, irrevocably shattered.
