Chapter 3

Yet, the underworld did not surrender its territory quietly.

It was a rainy Tuesday evening when the fragile peace shattered. Sienna was finishing up a late report in the penthouse while Nico was downstairs meeting with his regional capos. Suddenly, the secure doors of the private elevator chimed, and instead of Nico’s familiar stride, three heavily armed men wearing tactical gear and bearing the Morello insignia stepped out into the foyer.

Panic surged through Sienna’s veins. She knew the panic room code, but the security terminal was on the far side of the massive room, and the intruders were already sweeping the perimeter with suppressed firearms. Moving with quiet desperation, Sienna dove behind the heavy mahogany desk, pulling her phone out to dial emergency speed-dial one—Nico.

Before the call could connect, a heavy boot kicked the desk, and a gloved hand snatched the phone away, tossing it across the polished hardwood floor where it splintered into pieces. A rough hand grabbed Sienna by the collar of her tailored blouse, hauling her violently to her feet.

“Well, well, well,” sneered the lead gunman, pressing the cold barrel of a pistol against her temple. “The boss’s little pet accountant. Let’s see how much Valente cares about his ledgers when we send you back to him in pieces.”

Sienna’s breath hitched, terror cold and sharp in her throat, but years of dealing with difficult people—and months of surviving under Nico’s protection—had forged an inner steel within her. She didn't scream. She stared into the gunman’s eyes with defiant fury. “Nico is going to pull you apart piece by piece,” she whispered, her voice steady despite her trembling hands.

“Let her go.”

The deep, terrifying rumble echoed from the private elevator foyer like the roar of a caged beast.

The intruders spun around, raising their weapons, but they were already dead men walking. Nico Valente stood at the entrance of the room. He wasn't wearing his usual composed, immaculate expression; his jacket was gone, his sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, and his eyes burned with an incandescent, murderous rage that made the Morello enforcers instantly pale. He moved with terrifying, blinding speed. Before the lead gunman could pull the trigger, Nico crossed the floor, disarmed him with a sickening crunch of bone, and systematically dismantled the remaining two assailants in a flurry of brutal, calculated combat that ended with all three men unconscious on the floor.

The penthouse fell back into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Nico dropped the weapon he had seized, turning frantically toward the desk. When he saw Sienna standing there, shaken and pale but entirely unharmed, the hardened syndicate boss closed the distance between them in two massive strides and pulled her fiercely into his arms. His embrace was so tight it felt like a lifeline, his chest heaving against hers as he buried his face in her hair.

“Are you hurt? Did they touch you?” Nico demanded, his voice thick with a raw, agonizing vulnerability that he never showed to the world.

“I’m okay, Nico. I’m okay,” Sienna murmured, wrapping her arms around his waist and pressing her face into his solid, concrete chest—the very chest she had poked months ago. “You came for me.”

“Always,” Nico whispered fiercely, pulling back just enough to frame her face with his warm, calloused hands. He looked down into her eyes, all the walls and defenses he had built around his ruthless empire crumbling into dust. “You walked into my life by poking a bear, Sienna Brooks, and I am never, ever letting you go.”

He leaned down and kissed her—a deep, passionate, unyielding kiss that tasted of absolute devotion and a promise of a tomorrow free of shadows.

Fast forward one year later. The Morello syndicate was a distant memory, completely dismantled by a combination of federal indictments and relentless financial restructuring led by Sienna. The Valente empire operated entirely within the light of legitimate corporate enterprise, respected and untouchable.

On a sun-drenched Saturday afternoon, high above the glittering skyline of Chicago, a magnificent rooftop celebration was underway. Sienna stood in a breathtaking white lace gown, holding a bouquet of white roses, while friends, family, and former Vesper colleagues—including Tessa and Marco—applauded with joyful tears in their eyes. Nico stood before her in a tailored tuxedo, a rare, radiant smile transforming his harsh features into breathtaking handsome perfection.

As the minister pronounced them husband and wife, Nico pulled Sienna into his arms and kissed her tenderly amidst a shower of rose petals and cheering guests. Looking up into the dark, adoring eyes of the man who had once terrified the entire city, Sienna couldn't help a small, triumphant smile. It just went to show that sometimes, poking the right person in the chest was the best decision a girl could ever make.
