Chapter 3 - THE MAN WHO BETRAYED GABRIEL WASN’T THE UNCLE EVERYONE SUSPECTED—AND WHEN CLARA’S MOTHER WAS TAKEN, THE WAITRESS DISCOVERED HER DEAD HUSBAND HAD HIDDEN ONE FINAL NAME FROM BOTH FALCONE BROTHERS

Clara did not scream.

She wanted to.

Instead, she looked at Leonardo and said:

"Find my mother."

Everything changed.

Marco was detained.

Federal agents took control of the restaurant.

Leonardo's men spread across Illinois and Wisconsin.

For the next two hours, Clara sat in a private office watching strangers turn her mother's life into maps, phone records, traffic cameras, and probabilities.

At 11:42 p.m., they found Patricia's Subaru.

Abandoned.

No blood.

No body.

Clara held on to that.

No blood.

No body.

Alive until proven otherwise.

Marco sat in federal custody.

He demanded immunity.

Leonardo wanted to break his jaw.

Clara wanted information.

She chose information.

"Talk to him."

Leonardo stared at her.

"He helped kill Gabriel."

"Maybe."

"You believe him?"

"I believe scared people sometimes tell partial truths."

She looked toward the interrogation room.

"And Marco is scared."

Marco's story changed everything.

He admitted stealing from the Falcone organization.

He admitted laundering money through Bellweather Maritime.

He admitted forging Dante's signatures.

He even admitted arranging the Sicily meeting that put Gabriel on the doomed boat.

But he denied ordering the explosion.

"Who did?"

Leonardo demanded.

Marco looked at Clara.

"Your husband discovered I was stealing."

"That isn't an answer."

"He threatened to tell Leo."

"So you tried to kill him."

"No."

Marco's face tightened.

"I tried to buy him."

Leonardo laughed bitterly.

"Gabriel?"

"Yes. Stupid, I know."

"What happened?"

"He refused."

Clara almost smiled.

Of course he had.

Marco continued.

"Someone else learned he was collecting evidence."

"Who?"

Marco looked at Leonardo.

"Your father."

Silence.

Leonardo's face emptied.

"Our father was dead."

"Officially."

Clara stared.

"What?"

Marco leaned back.

"Salvatore Falcone didn't die from cancer when you were twenty-three."

Leonardo stood so abruptly his chair fell.

"Careful."

"Ask Dante."

Leonardo turned.

Dante looked pale.

"You knew?"

"No."

Marco laughed.

"Dante's father did."

Dante grabbed Marco by the collar.

"Say the name."

"Salvatore lived another eight years under another identity."

"Impossible."

"Your father understood power better than either of you. He staged his death so law enforcement would stop looking at him while you became the visible boss."

Leonardo stepped back.

For the first time since Clara met him, he looked genuinely lost.

"My father died in my arms."

"A dying body. Morphine. Closed coffin. Private funeral."

Marco smiled without humor.

"You saw what he wanted you to see."

Clara thought of Gabriel.

A fake death.

A new identity.

History repeating itself.

"Where is Salvatore now?"

Marco looked at her.

"Dead."

"Really dead?"

"Two years ago."

"Then he didn't take my mother."

"No."

"Who did?"

Marco hesitated.

Then said:

"Dr. Evelyn Shaw."

Clara frowned.

The name meant nothing.

Until Leonardo whispered:

"No."

Dante looked at him.

"Who?"

Leonardo sat.

"Gabriel's neurologist."

Clara's heart stopped.

"What neurologist?"

Nobody answered quickly enough.

"What neurologist?"

Leonardo looked at her.

"Before Sicily, Gabriel had seizures."

Clara stared.

"He never told me."

"Because they stopped."

"Why?"

"Shaw treated him."

Clara remembered Gabriel's final year.

Headaches.

Insomnia.

Occasional tremors.

He blamed stress.

After the crash, doctors told Clara he had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage before impact.

Suddenly she understood.

"Gabriel didn't die from the crash."

Leonardo became still.

Clara continued.

"The medical examiner said the head injury might have started before the collision."

She had never questioned it.

Why would she?

"He was poisoned."

Marco nodded.

"Shaw worked for Salvatore."

Clara felt the room tilt.

Dr. Evelyn Shaw had built a respected career treating neurological disorders.

Behind that career was a second function.

She helped the old Falcone leadership remove problems without bullets.

A seizure behind the wheel.

A stroke in a hotel.

A heart attack during sleep.

Clean deaths.

Ordinary deaths.

Gabriel discovered her connection to Salvatore shortly before his own death.

He contacted Leonardo.

Then he was killed.

And now Shaw wanted the ring.

Why?

Clara suddenly remembered Gabriel's letter.

The ring held the key to the safe-deposit box.

But what if that wasn't its only secret?

She took it out.

Examined the empty compartment beneath the onyx.

Dante brought tools.

A jeweler working with federal agents examined it.

Inside the inner platinum band was a micro-etched sequence.

Sixteen numbers.

An account key.

Leonardo recognized the structure.

"Encrypted archive."

They entered the sequence into Gabriel's old files.

One locked folder opened.

Video.

Gabriel appeared on screen.

Clara stopped breathing.

Older than the photograph.

Younger than the man she buried.

Her husband.

Alive.

"If you're watching this, I didn't get the chance to finish."

Clara covered her mouth.

Gabriel continued.

"Leo, I'm sorry."

Leonardo looked away.

"Clara, if you're there, I'm even more sorry."

She cried silently.

"I discovered our father survived his supposed death. He built a shadow structure behind Leonardo's organization. Marco stole money from it, but Marco isn't the architect."

Gabriel looked exhausted.

"Dr. Evelyn Shaw manages the network."

Documents appeared.

Names.

Accounts.

Medical records.

Deaths.

Judges.

Union leaders.

Witnesses.

Rivals.

Even Falcone members.

Shaw had spent years killing people through medicine.

Gabriel continued:

"She believes control is more important than family. Salvatore taught her that."

Then his voice softened.

"I tried to get enough evidence before telling Clara because I wanted to keep her out of this."

He looked directly into the camera.

"I understand now that keeping someone ignorant isn't the same as keeping them safe."

Clara closed her eyes.

Even Gabriel had learned too late.

"Clara, I'm sorry."

The video ended with coordinates.

A private medical facility outside Lake Geneva.

Wisconsin.

Clara stood.

"My mother."

Leonardo nodded.

"Probably."

"I'm coming."

"No."

Clara stared at him.

Leonardo stopped.

Then almost laughed.

"Right."

"What?"

"I heard Gabriel in my head telling me I'm making the same mistake."

"Good."

"You're still staying behind the tactical team."

"Fine."

"Body armor."

"Fine."

"Dante stays with you."

"Dante?"

The large man shrugged.

"I'm delightful."

Clara looked at him.

"No one has ever used that word."

The Lake Geneva facility appeared abandoned.

It wasn't.

Federal tactical teams entered at 3:17 a.m.

Clara waited in an armored vehicle.

Longest nine minutes of her life.

Then the radio crackled.

"One civilian female located. Alive."

Clara sobbed.

Patricia Bennett came out wrapped in a blanket.

Clara ran.

They collided halfway across the parking lot.

Her mother held her.

"I'm okay."

Clara cried into her shoulder.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"Everything."

Patricia pulled back.

"Did you kidnap me?"

"No."

"Then stop apologizing."

Clara laughed through tears.

Then Patricia looked behind her.

At Leonardo.

"Who's the handsome criminal?"

Clara closed her eyes.

"Mom."

"What?"

"Please."

Leonardo actually smiled.

Dr. Shaw escaped.

But she left something behind.

A wall covered with photographs.

Gabriel.

Leonardo.

Marco.

Dante.

Clara.

And dozens of others.

Shaw had been watching them for years.

One photograph showed Gabriel and Clara's Seattle wedding.

Another showed Gabriel outside their apartment.

Another showed Clara at his funeral.

Leonardo stared.

"She knew he survived the boat the entire time."

Clara's anger became cold.

"Then why wait two years to kill him?"

Dante found the answer.

A file labeled BENNETT.

Gabriel's fake identity had not merely hidden him.

Shaw had used him.

She allowed him to live because he unknowingly led her to Marco's financial network.

Once Gabriel discovered her role, she killed him.

Clara sat down.

Three years of grief changed shape.

Gabriel had lied.

But he had also tried to return.

Tried to tell the truth.

And died before he could.

Leonardo stood beside her.

"I spent five years thinking my brother abandoned us."

Clara looked at him.

"I spent three thinking he died because a truck driver lost control."

They sat together.

Two people grieving different versions of the same man.

Then Clara noticed one final document.

A transfer scheduled for Friday.

One hundred forty million dollars.

Shaw was preparing to move the remaining shadow network's money offshore.

Destination:

Cayman Islands.

Authorization required two Falcone biometric signatures.

Leonardo.

And Gabriel.

Clara frowned.

"Gabriel is dead."

Dante stared at the screen.

"Shaw doesn't think so."

A new email appeared.

Sent minutes earlier.

LEONARDO,

BRING CLARA AND THE RING TO PIER 19 TOMORROW AT MIDNIGHT.

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO IS USING YOUR BROTHER'S NAME, COME ALONE.

Leonardo read it twice.

Clara felt something colder than fear.

Because Gabriel Falcone was dead.

She had watched his heart stop.

She had identified his body.

She had buried him.

So if someone was currently using Gabriel's biometric identity to unlock one hundred forty million dollars—

then the conspiracy had one final ghost left to expose.
