Chapter 2 - The Mafia Boss Rushed to the Hospital After a Death Threat—Then Discovered the Senator Was Using Sick Patients to Hide a Million-Dollar CrimeVictor answered before the second ring.

“Chloe?”

She couldn't speak.

He heard her breathing.

“What happened?”

Her voice broke.

“Someone left a photograph.”

Silence.

“Of Liam.”

Victor's tone changed.

“Where are you?”

“Home.”

“Lock the door. I'm sending Gabriel to you. Don't touch anything else in the envelope.”

Chloe looked at the photograph.

Her hands trembled.

“They said he won't make it to Friday.”

Victor was silent for a moment.

Then he said, “I'm calling the hospital and Detective Ellis.”

Chloe began crying.

“Please.”

His voice softened.

“I'm here.”

Gabriel arrived twelve minutes later.

He wore a dark coat and carried a phone.

He didn't ask unnecessary questions.

He checked the apartment entrance, then waited while Chloe gathered her things.

Victor had arranged for Detective Ellis to collect the envelope.

A hospital administrator confirmed Liam was still in his room and receiving treatment.

But Chloe didn't believe anything until she saw him.

At Oakridge Memorial, she hurried through the corridor.

The smell of antiseptic made her stomach twist.

She reached Liam's room.

He was awake.

A basketball game played quietly on television.

When he saw her, he smiled.

“Hey, disaster.”

Chloe began crying.

Liam's smile disappeared.

“Whoa. What happened?”

She crossed the room and hugged him carefully.

He smelled like hospital soap and the peppermint gum he wasn't supposed to chew.

“Chloe?”

She held him tighter.

“I'm okay,” he whispered.

She shook her head.

“You're not allowed to scare me like that.”

He frowned.

“I didn't do anything.”

She laughed through tears.

“I know.”

Liam looked over her shoulder.

Victor stood in the doorway.

He wore a black coat and an expression that made the room feel smaller.

Liam blinked.

“Uh.”

Chloe pulled back.

“This is Victor.”

Liam stared.

“Victor Costello?”

Victor nodded.

“Hello, Liam.”

Liam looked at Chloe.

Then back at Victor.

“Did you rob a bank?”

Chloe laughed despite herself.

Victor smiled faintly.

“Not recently.”

Liam grinned.

“Okay. I like him.”

Dr. Amelia Hart entered shortly afterward.

She was Liam's nephrologist.

Forty-two.

Calm.

Exhausted.

And visibly concerned.

She reviewed his latest results.

“His condition is stable tonight,” she said. “But we need to continue treatment without interruption.”

Chloe swallowed.

“Can the hospital stop it because of funding?”

Dr. Hart frowned.

“Why would you ask that?”

Chloe hesitated.

Victor spoke.

“Senator Caldwell threatened to interfere with a healthcare grant.”

Dr. Hart went still.

For a moment, she looked toward the door.

Then she said, “We should discuss this privately.”

In a small conference room, Dr. Hart closed the door.

She looked at Chloe.

“I need you to understand something.”

Chloe nodded.

“Liam's treatment decisions are medical. A senator cannot simply order us to stop caring for him.”

Chloe exhaled.

But Dr. Hart continued.

“However, the hospital has been under significant financial pressure.”

Victor leaned forward.

“What kind?”

Dr. Hart hesitated.

“Several community healthcare grants have been delayed.”

Chloe felt cold.

“Because of Caldwell?”

“I can't prove that.”

Dr. Hart looked down.

“But the delays began after our administration refused to approve certain consulting contracts.”

Victor's expression hardened.

“Contracts with whom?”

Dr. Hart hesitated.

Then whispered, “Caldwell Health Strategies.”

Chloe stared.

Victor leaned back.

“His family company.”

Dr. Hart nodded.

“Yes.”

By morning, Detective Ellis had opened a broader investigation.

The photograph left at Chloe's apartment was preserved as evidence.

Hospital security footage was reviewed.

And federal investigators were contacted about possible misuse of public funds.

Victor provided the restaurant recordings.

Chloe gave another statement.

And Dr. Hart agreed to share relevant documents through the proper legal process.

But the investigation revealed something nobody expected.

Several hospital patients had been billed for treatments they never received.

Millions of dollars had passed through consulting firms connected to Caldwell's political network.

And some of the records had been altered after patients died.

Chloe learned about the fraud from a newspaper article.

She sat beside Liam's bed reading the headline.

HOSPITAL CONTRACTS UNDER FEDERAL REVIEW.

Liam looked up from his phone.

“What's wrong?”

Chloe swallowed.

“Nothing.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“Chloe.”

She sighed.

“There's an investigation.”

“Into what?”

She hesitated.

Then explained.

Liam listened.

When she finished, he stared at her.

“So that senator threatened you because you knew something?”

Chloe shook her head.

“I didn't know anything.”

Liam frowned.

“Then why?”

She looked down.

“I think he wanted to frighten someone who couldn't fight back.”

Liam's expression changed.

“Because of me?”

Chloe reached for his hand.

“No.”

He looked away.

“Chloe.”

She squeezed his fingers.

“This isn't your fault.”

He swallowed.

“You've given up everything for me.”

Her heart broke.

“Liam.”

He continued.

“You quit school. You work all the time. You never go anywhere.”

Chloe felt tears rise.

Liam looked at her.

“And now some senator is threatening you because I'm sick.”

She shook her head.

“Listen to me.”

He looked up.

“You are not a burden.”

His eyes filled.

She continued.

“You're my brother. You're the reason I keep going.”

Liam began crying.

Chloe hugged him.

For a long time, neither spoke.

That evening, Victor found Chloe sitting alone in the hospital cafeteria.

A paper cup of coffee rested beside her.

She hadn't touched it.

He approached quietly.

“Mind if I sit?”

She shook her head.

Victor sat.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he asked, “How's Liam?”

“Stable.”

Victor nodded.

“Good.”

Chloe looked at him.

“Why are you doing all this?”

He studied her.

She continued.

“You barely know me.”

Victor smiled faintly.

“I know you work harder than anyone at the restaurant.”

Chloe looked down.

“I know you remember everyone's orders.”

She laughed softly.

“I know you always give the kitchen staff the leftover desserts.”

She blinked.

He continued.

“And I know you visit your brother after twelve-hour shifts.”

Chloe felt tears rise.

Victor's expression softened.

“I notice more than you think.”

She stared at him.

Then whispered, “People usually don't.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

Victor had not always been a good man.

He knew that.

He had inherited a criminal organization from his father.

He had spent years maintaining power through fear.

And although he had begun separating legitimate businesses from illegal operations, the past still followed him.

Chloe knew his reputation.

She knew people were afraid of him.

And that frightened her.

One evening, she asked him directly.

“Have you hurt people?”

Victor didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, “Yes.”

Chloe felt cold.

He continued.

“I've made decisions I regret.”

She looked down.

“Then why should I trust you?”

Victor considered.

“You shouldn't trust me because I say the right things.”

She looked up.

He continued.

“Watch what I do.”

Chloe studied him.

Then nodded slowly.

It wasn't a promise of perfection.

But it was honest.

The investigation intensified.

Several hospital executives were questioned.

A former accountant came forward.

And evidence suggested Caldwell had used healthcare grants to pressure hospitals into awarding contracts to companies he controlled.

Victor's attorneys began reviewing whether any of his own businesses had unknowingly processed related payments.

He instructed them to cooperate fully.

Gabriel looked surprised.

“Boss, that could expose us.”

Victor nodded.

“I know.”

Gabriel hesitated.

“Are you sure?”

Victor looked toward the hospital window.

“Yes.”

Two days later, Chloe received another message.

This time, it came from an unknown email address.

STOP TALKING.

THE NEXT WARNING WON'T BE A PHOTOGRAPH.

Attached was a video.

Liam's hospital corridor.

Recorded from a security camera.

Chloe's hands began shaking.

She called Victor.

He answered immediately.

“Chloe?”

Her voice broke.

“They're watching him.”

Victor went still.

“Send me the message.”

She did.

Then he said, “I'm calling Ellis.”

Chloe began crying.

“Please don't let anything happen to him.”

Victor's voice softened.

“I'll do everything I legally can.”

She swallowed.

For the first time, she realized how much she had begun to depend on hearing his voice.

Not because he was powerful.

But because he listened.

That night, Victor met Detective Ellis.

She reviewed the video.

Then looked at him.

“Someone has access to the hospital security system.”

Victor nodded.

“Can you identify them?”

“We're working on it.”

He leaned forward.

“Chloe and Liam are being threatened.”

Ellis studied him.

“I know.”

Victor's jaw tightened.

She continued.

“And I need you to let us handle it.”

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then nodded.

“Understood.”

Ellis looked surprised.

Victor almost smiled.

“People can change, Detective.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“We'll see.”

At midnight, Dr. Hart called Chloe.

Her voice sounded strained.

“Chloe, I need you to come to the hospital.”

Chloe sat upright.

“What's wrong?”

Dr. Hart hesitated.

“Liam's medication records have been altered.”

Chloe felt cold.

“What?”

The doctor continued.

“Someone entered an unauthorized order.”

Chloe stopped breathing.

Dr. Hart's voice trembled.

“We caught it before it was administered.”

Chloe began crying.

May you like

Then the doctor said something worse.

“The person who entered the order used my credentials.”
