Chapter 3

CHAPTER 3 — The House of Cards Crumbles
Back at the estate, the atmosphere in the kitchen was electric with the intoxicating thrill of unearned victory.
Mark sat at the kitchen island, his laptop open, the silver hardware key plugged into the USB port. He watched the progress bar hit 100%, a massive, predatory smile stretching across his face.
Juliette paced behind him, a fresh glass of expensive wine in her hand. The blood from her shattered glass earlier had been hastily bandaged, but she didn't care. She was on the verge of ultimate triumph.
"Is it done, Mark?" Juliette demanded, her voice shrill with greed. "Are the funds secured?"
"The transfer is initiated, Mother," Mark said, leaning back in his chair and running a hand through his hair. "Twelve million dollars, completely untraceable, routed directly to the Caymans. Annie’s little server room did exactly what we needed it to do."
Chloe and Megan squealed in delight from the living room couch.
"Finally!" Chloe exclaimed, checking her reflection in her phone camera. "I am booking a month-long trip to Milan tomorrow. I deserve it after spending an entire weekend in this rural nightmare."
"I want a new G-Wagon," Megan chimed in. "Mark, you promised."
Mark looked at his sisters, his smile slowly fading into a look of absolute, chilling contempt.
"I promised you nothing," Mark said, his voice dropping into a cold, flat tone that made the entire room freeze.
Juliette stopped pacing. "Mark, what are you talking about? We agreed on the distribution percentages."
Mark slowly stood up from the stool, closing his laptop halfway.
"We agreed on nothing, Mother," he sneered, looking at the women who had raised him and worshipped him. "Did you really think I was going to split this fortune with you? With them?" He gestured disgustedly toward his sisters.
Chloe’s jaw dropped. "Excuse me?"
"You are parasites," Mark spat, the true depth of his narcissism finally breaking through the surface. "For seven years, I was the one who had to sleep next to that pathetic, boring woman. I was the one who had to play the loving husband. I was the one who orchestrated the expiration of the prenup."
"I set up the shell companies!" Juliette screamed, her face turning a mottled red. "I managed the offshore logistics! You wouldn't know how to launder a dime without my contacts!"
"Your contacts are outdated, old woman," Mark laughed, a cruel, echoing sound. "I changed the routing numbers an hour ago. The money isn't going to the family trust. It's going to an encrypted wallet that only I control."
Juliette dropped her wine glass. It shattered on the hardwood floor, a stark reminder of the mess they had made of my home.
"You ungrateful little bastard!" Juliette roared, lunging toward him.
Mark simply stepped aside, letting her stumble against the kitchen counter. "Pack your bags. All of you. You have one hour to get out of my house before I call the local sheriff and have you trespassed."
Megan began to cry hysterically, while Chloe started screaming profanities, hurling a decorative bowl across the room.
The family that had prided itself on being superior, wealthy, and untouchable was currently tearing itself apart like starving wolves fighting over a scrap of meat.
Mark ignored them. He opened his laptop again to verify the final confirmation of his newly acquired wealth.
He stared at the screen.
His brow furrowed.
The confirmation screen hadn't appeared. Instead, a black command prompt window had opened on his desktop.
White text began to scroll rapidly across the screen.
U.S. TREASURY ASSET REPATRIATION PROTOCOL INITIATED.
Mark blinked, leaning closer to the screen. "What the hell is this?"
He frantically clicked his mouse, trying to close the window. The cursor was frozen.
BIOMETRIC SIGNATURE VERIFIED: MARK V. EVANS. OFFSHORE ACCOUNTS LOCATED. LIQUIDATING ASSETS.
"No, no, no," Mark muttered, his fingers flying across the keyboard, slamming the escape key repeatedly. "Cancel. Cancel!"
The screen ignored him.
CAYMAN ACCOUNT 8849-B: DRAINED. LUXEMBOURG TRUST 112-A: DRAINED. DOMESTIC HOLDINGS: FROZEN.
Mark let out a strangled, breathless sound. He grabbed his phone and opened his banking app, the same app he had proudly shown me the night before.
The seven-figure balance was gone.
In its place was a single, terrifying number.
$0.00.
"Mark?" Juliette asked, her anger momentarily pausing as she noticed the absolute, sheer terror radiating from her son's rigid body. "What is happening?"
Mark didn't answer. He couldn't.
He stared at the laptop screen as one final message appeared in bright, bold text.
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY. THE ARCHITECT SENDS HIS REGARDS.
Mark fell backward, his legs giving out beneath him. He hit the kitchen floor hard, staring up at the smoke detector where he had hidden his camera.
The realization hit him with the force of a freight train.
May you like
Annie hadn't been arrested.
Annie had won.
