Chapter 5 - My Husband Learned His Mother Had Known About His Brother's Murder—Then He Found Me Standing Between Her and a Loaded Gun“Charlotte knew.”

Daniel Cross's words seemed to stop time.
Graham stood beside the hospital bed.
His face had gone completely still.
I knew that expression now.
It meant he was holding himself together by force.
“What did she know?” he asked.
Daniel swallowed.
“The platform. The cables. Everett's plan.”
Graham leaned closer.
“Did she help him?”
Daniel's eyes filled.
“I don't know.”
Graham stared at him.
Then he turned and walked out.
I followed.
“Graham!”
He didn't stop.
“Graham, wait.”
He reached the parking garage.
Then slammed his fist against a concrete pillar.
I flinched.
He stood there breathing hard.
“My mother.”
I approached slowly.
“We don't know everything yet.”
“She knew.”
“Daniel said she knew. That's not the same as saying she helped.”
Graham turned.
His eyes were wet.
“She watched me mourn him.”
My heart broke.
“She watched me blame myself for four years.”
I stepped closer.
He looked at me.
“And she let me marry you knowing exactly what your father had been accused of.”
I reached for his hand.
He pulled me into his arms.
For the first time, Graham Vale cried against my shoulder.
Charlotte denied everything.
At first.
Then Graham showed her Daniel's recorded statement.
Her expression changed.
She sat down slowly.
“I knew Everett was dangerous.”
Graham stared.
“Did you know he planned to kill Miles?”
“No.”
“Did you know about the sabotage?”
Charlotte began crying.
“I knew he wanted the inspection report changed.”
I felt sick.
“When?”
“Before the accident.”
Graham stepped backward.
Charlotte covered her mouth.
“I thought he wanted to delay the project. I didn't know Miles would be there.”
Graham stared at her.
“You knew someone was tampering with a construction site.”
Charlotte nodded.
“And you said nothing.”
“I was afraid.”
Graham laughed bitterly.
“Everyone was afraid.”
Charlotte looked at him.
“Everett threatened you.”
Graham's expression hardened.
“And you believed silence would protect me?”
She began sobbing.
“I thought I could fix it.”
He shook his head.
“You can't fix a grave.”
That evening, Graham moved out of the third-floor bedroom.
Not because he wanted to leave.
Because he couldn't bear to be alone.
He stood outside my door holding a pillow.
I opened it.
He looked almost embarrassed.
“Can I stay here tonight?”
I stared.
The most feared mafia boss in Boston was standing in my hallway asking permission to sleep beside his own wife.
I stepped aside.
“Yes.”
He entered quietly.
We lay beside each other in the darkness.
Neither spoke for a long time.
Then Graham whispered:
“I don't know how to be the man you deserve.”
I turned toward him.
“Start by being honest.”
He looked at me.
“I want you here.”
My heart stumbled.
“Because of the contract?”
“No.”
“Because of the trust?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
He brushed a strand of hair away from my face.
“Because when everything falls apart, you're the person I want beside me.”
I closed my eyes.
Then I kissed him.
Slowly.
Gently.
He kissed me back.
And for the first time since our wedding, I felt like his wife.
Not a bargaining chip.
Not a debt.
Not a name on a contract.
His wife.
The next morning, Everett Vale disappeared.
His office was empty.
His phone was disconnected.
And nearly twelve million dollars had been transferred from a family investment account.
Graham's security team began searching.
But I found something they missed.
A payment from Everett's holding company to a private investigator.
The investigator had been following me for months.
Long before Charlotte approached my family.
I opened the attached photographs.
My apartment.
My office.
My father's factory.
My wedding dress fitting.
And one photograph that made my blood run cold.
Me standing beside Graham at Miles's memorial.
Taken three weeks before our wedding.
On the back, someone had written:
SHE WILL BE THE NEXT ONE.
That evening, Charlotte came to see me.
She looked exhausted.
Her pearls were gone.
For once, she seemed less like the matriarch of a powerful family and more like a frightened mother.
“Audrey,” she whispered, “I need your help.”
I stared.
“Why?”
“Everett contacted me.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did he say?”
Charlotte began crying.
“He wants Graham to sign over the voting shares.”
“And if he refuses?”
She looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
“He'll kill you.”
Before I could answer, a sharp sound came from the hallway.
A gunshot.
Charlotte screamed.
The study door burst open.
A masked man stepped inside holding a pistol.
I moved instinctively.
I pushed Charlotte behind me.
The man raised his weapon.
Then Graham appeared in the doorway.
His face went white.
“Audrey!”
The gunman turned.
And I heard Graham shout the words that would change everything.
May you like
“TAKE ME! LEAVE MY WIFE ALONE!”
