Chapter 2 - The Mafia Boss Brought a Maid Before the Five Families—Then She Spotted the One Lie That Proved His Own Father Was Part of the Assassination PlotCamila had never seen so much money gathered around one table.

The private dining room occupied the top floor of a building overlooking Manhattan.

No signs outside.

No reservation system.

No public entrance.

The kind of place that existed specifically for people powerful enough not to need permission.

Rocco sat beside her.

His father, Vittorio Bernardi, occupied the opposite end.

Camila had seen Vittorio only twice at the mansion.

Seventy years old.

Silver hair.

A cane he didn't need.

Eyes that made grown men stop talking.

Beside him sat representatives of the other four families.

Salvatore DeLuca.

Beatrice's father.

Anthony Corsetti.

Gabriel Romano.

Elena Vitale.

Camila immediately noticed something.

Elena was the only woman.

And the only person at the table who looked at Camila without contempt.

Vittorio spoke first.

“Explain.”

Rocco did.

No drama.

No exaggeration.

The altered limousine.

Missing driver.

False identity.

Beatrice's pistol.

The phone call.

When he finished, Salvatore DeLuca stood.

“My daughter would never betray an alliance.”

Rocco looked at Camila.

“Tell them.”

Her mouth went dry.

She felt every eye.

Six months of invisibility screamed at her to become small again.

Rocco didn't touch her.

Didn't speak for her.

He waited.

Camila inhaled.

“I was cleaning Miss DeLuca's dressing room.”

Salvatore interrupted.

“So you were spying.”

“No.”

“Then why were you hiding?”

“I wasn't initially.”

She explained.

Beatrice entered unexpectedly.

Camila had been behind a wardrobe collecting dropped jewelry boxes.

When Beatrice began the phone call, Camila realized leaving would reveal her.

“So you eavesdropped.”

“I listened.”

“Same thing.”

Camila looked at him.

“Then we're arguing vocabulary instead of whether your daughter arranged a murder.”

Silence.

Rocco lowered his head slightly.

Camila suspected he was hiding a smile.

Salvatore was not.

“You have courage.”

“I’m terrified.”

That surprised them.

Camila continued.

“Courage isn't the absence of fear.”

Elena Vitale smiled.

“She's right.”

Vittorio looked at his son.

“You brought a maid to lecture us?”

Camila felt Rocco tense.

She answered first.

“He brought a witness.”

Vittorio's eyes moved to her.

For one terrible moment, Camila understood exactly where Rocco had learned to make rooms quiet.

Then Vittorio smiled.

“Interesting.”

Rocco said, “Beatrice mentioned Marco.”

Salvatore's expression changed.

Camila saw it.

There.

Tiny.

But real.

“Who is Marco?” Rocco asked.

“No one.”

Camila watched him.

Salvatore lifted his water.

His right hand shook.

Not fear.

Anger.

Then Elena spoke.

“Marco Santini.”

The room froze.

Rocco turned.

“Who?”

Elena leaned back.

“Former Bernardi accountant.”

Vittorio's cane stopped moving.

Camila noticed.

Rocco did too.

“My accountant?”

“Your father's.”

Rocco looked at Vittorio.

“You told me Santini died.”

“He did.”

“When?”

“Eight years ago.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Vittorio's expression hardened.

“Elena.”

“He disappeared eight years ago.”

She looked at Rocco.

“Different thing.”

Rocco stared at his father.

“Where is he?”

“I don't know.”

Camila looked around.

Everyone was watching Vittorio.

Except Salvatore.

He was looking at the door.

She leaned toward Rocco.

“He wants to leave.”

Rocco followed her gaze.

“Salvatore.”

The man stopped.

“Sit.”

“You don't order me.”

“No.”

Rocco's voice remained calm.

“But if you walk out before explaining why your daughter mentioned my father's missing accountant, everyone here will decide what that means without you.”

Salvatore sat.

Camila almost admired the tactic.

Almost.

The discussion continued.

Arguments.

Accusations.

Twenty years of grudges surfaced.

Camila listened.

Not to volume.

Words.

Anthony Corsetti repeatedly denied involvement.

Gabriel Romano demanded proof.

Elena asked precise questions.

Vittorio said very little.

Then Salvatore made the mistake.

“My daughter would never put an explosive beneath Rocco's car.”

Camila stopped breathing.

Nobody else reacted.

She touched Rocco's wrist.

He looked at her.

She whispered, “We never said explosive.”

Rocco became perfectly still.

Camila repeated louder.

“Mr. DeLuca.”

Everyone turned.

“How did you know there was an explosive device?”

Silence.

Salvatore stared.

Camila's heart hammered.

“We said the locks were disabled.”

She looked at Rocco.

“You never mentioned the fuel line.”

“No.”

Salvatore stood.

“That proves nothing.”

Camila continued.

“Then how did you know?”

“You're twisting words.”

“No.”

Her fear was disappearing.

Replacing itself with something stronger.

Certainty.

“You knew because someone told you.”

Salvatore reached inside his jacket.

Five guns appeared.

Rocco moved Camila behind him.

Elena's guards drew weapons.

Chaos hovered one breath away.

Then Vittorio slammed his cane against the floor.

“Enough!”

Silence.

Salvatore's hand remained beneath his jacket.

Vittorio stared.

“Answer her.”

Salvatore looked around.

Realized he had lost the room.

Then laughed.

“You're listening to a maid.”

Elena replied.

“No.”

She smiled coldly.

“We're listening to the only person at this table who caught your mistake.”

Salvatore's face hardened.

Then the lights went out.

Camila heard Rocco curse.

A hand caught hers.

His.

“Down.”

Gunfire exploded.

Glass shattered.

Someone screamed.

Camila crawled beneath the table.

Rocco covered her with his body.

More shots.

Then emergency lights activated.

Salvatore was gone.

One guard lay wounded.

Vittorio stood unharmed.

Too unharmed.

Camila looked toward him.

His chair had been moved before the lights failed.

She frowned.

“Rocco.”

“What?”

“Your father knew.”

Rocco froze.

“What?”

“His chair.”

Vittorio heard.

His eyes found hers.

Camila pointed.

“Everyone else reacted after the lights went out.”

She swallowed.

“You moved first.”

Silence.

Rocco slowly stood.

“Father?”

Vittorio stared at Camila.

Then said something chilling.

“You should have remained invisible.”

Rocco's face changed.

Camila understood.

Beatrice wasn't the beginning.

Salvatore wasn't the center.

The conspiracy had reached the head of the Bernardi family itself.

Rocco's own father.

Vittorio turned toward his son.

“You were never supposed to survive the drive.”

The words landed like bullets.

Rocco didn't move.

“Why?”

Vittorio sighed.

“Because you were destroying everything I built.”

Rocco stared.

“I expanded the organization.”

“You legitimized it.”

“That was the point.”

“You closed profitable routes.”

“Drugs.”

“You ended protection agreements.”

“Extortion.”

“You gave territory back.”

“To businesses we were stealing from.”

Vittorio's face twisted.

“You became weak.”

“No.”

Rocco's voice was quiet.

“I became tired of burying people.”

Camila watched father and son.

Vittorio continued.

“The Five Families respected your grandfather.”

“They feared him.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

Camila thought of Beatrice.

Men like Rocco think everything is ownership.

Except Rocco had canceled an alliance rather than sacrifice truth.

He had brought a maid into the most powerful room in New York and let her speak.

Maybe he wasn't the man his father wanted.

Maybe that was why Vittorio wanted him dead.

Vittorio turned to Camila.

“And you.”

Rocco stepped between them.

“Don't.”

“She destroyed twenty years of planning.”

“She told the truth.”

“She is staff.”

“Not anymore.”

Camila looked at Rocco.

He hadn't discussed that with her.

His eyes met hers.

He realized.

“Sorry.”

Even now.

Camila almost laughed.

Vittorio looked disgusted.

“You apologize to servants?”

Rocco turned.

“I apologize when I'm wrong.”

The sentence changed the room.

Elena Vitale smiled slowly.

“Perhaps the Bernardis finally produced one worth negotiating with.”

Vittorio's face darkened.

Then gunfire erupted outside.

Antonio's voice sounded through Rocco's phone.

“Boss! We found the real driver.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“He knows where Santini is.”

Rocco looked at Camila.

Vittorio moved.

Too late.

Security surrounded him.

Rocco stared at his father.

“Tonight you tried to kill me.”

Vittorio smiled.

“And tomorrow?”

Rocco's eyes hardened.

“Tomorrow I take everything from you.”

Vittorio laughed.

“You can't.”

“Why?”

“Because the empire isn't yours.”

Rocco frowned.

Vittorio looked at Camila.

“Ask your maid.”

Camila stared.

“What?”

“Ask her why her father really died.”

The room disappeared around her.

Rocco turned.

“Camila?”

She couldn't breathe.

Vittorio smiled.

“Mateo Reyes wasn't a mechanic.”

May you like

Camila's heart stopped.

“He worked for me.”
