Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage Inside the Moretti Citadel

"I'm what?" I stared at Adrian, the heavy leather briefcase sitting on my counter like a mocking monument to my ordinary life. "I'm not going anywhere with you! I have a job, I have an apartment, I—"
"You have thirty minutes," Adrian interrupted, his tone shifting instantly from paternal vulnerability back to absolute, unshakable command. He handed the baby to a trusted female nurse who had materialized out of the hallway like a ghost. "My men will pack your essential belongings. You are no longer safe in this neighborhood, Miss Vance. Whoever threw my daughter into that dumpster knows you found her. And they will come looking for the witness."
Before I could argue, the two guards stepped on either side of me. There was no physical violence, but there was no escape either. Within twenty minutes, I was guided out of my basement apartment and into the back of a matte-black armored Maybach.
The drive across the city felt like crossing the border into a different universe. We left behind the cramped, neon-lit alleys of Manhattan and headed north, climbing the winding, heavily guarded private roads of Westchester County.
Through the tinted windows, I watched in awe as we passed iron security gates guarded by men with automatic weapons, winding through dense pine forests before pulling up in front of a sprawling, gothic limestone estate that looked more like a European fortress than a home.
The Moretti Citadel.
Inside, the mansion was a breathtaking maze of vaulted marble ceilings, priceless oil paintings, crystal chandeliers, and silent, black-suited guards stationed at every corner. I was led not to a guest room, but to a massive, luxurious suite on the second floor overlooking the stormy Atlantic Ocean.
A team of high-end personal stylists and maids arrived within minutes, unpacking clothes, drawing a warm bath infused with lavender and rose petals, and treating me not like a kidnapped hostage, but like a visiting royalty.
"Mr. Moretti requests your presence in the master study once you are dressed, Miss Vance," a polite elderly housekeeper named Mrs. Gable informed me, bowing slightly before leaving the room.
Two hours later, wearing a simple yet elegant emerald-green silk dress that had magically appeared in my closet, I walked down the grand staircase and navigated the quiet corridors until I found a pair of heavy mahogany doors guarded by two armed men.
They nodded and pushed the doors open.
The master study was a cathedral of books, dark wood, and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the crashing waves. Adrian stood by the fireplace, a crystal glass of amber bourbon in his hand. He had changed into a tailored charcoal suit, looking every bit the ruthless syndicate kingpin.
He turned as I entered. For a second, his breath caught. His dark eyes swept over me, a flicker of deep appreciation burning in their depths.
"The color suits you," Adrian said, his voice smooth as velvet.
"Why am I here, Mr. Moretti?" I asked, keeping my distance, crossing my arms over my chest. "You got your daughter back. You paid me off. Why trap me in this fortress?"
Adrian took a slow sip of his drink, setting the glass down on the mahogany desk. He walked toward me, his movements predatory yet graceful.
"Because the war has already begun, Elena," he said, stopping just inches away. "Someone inside my own inner circle betrayed me. Someone tried to kill my child to weaken my bloodline. And you... you are the only person outside of my inner circle who knows the truth about that night."
My heart pounded. "You brought me here as a target?"
"I brought you here because I am going to protect you," Adrian corrected, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous growl. He reached out, his knuckles gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. The warmth of his skin sent a violent electric shock straight down my spine. "And because, from the moment I saw you holding my daughter in that basement, looking like an angel who had descended into hell... I realized something terrifying."
May you like
"What?" I breathed, unable to tear my eyes away from his.
"You aren't leaving my house, Elena," Adrian whispered fiercely. "Because you already own a piece of my heart."
