Chapter 4 - Blood in the Boardroom and the Betrayal Within

The following week inside the Moretti estate was a surreal blur of luxury, tension, and a growing, dangerous intimacy with a man I had spent my entire life trying to avoid.

Every afternoon, Adrian allowed me into the high-security nursery on the third floor to hold little Elena. Watching the fierce, cold mafia boss transform into a gentle, doting father around his daughter cracked open every defensive wall I had ever built. I found myself laughing at his dry, sarcastic jokes, sharing late-night bottles of formula in the dimly lit nursery, and feeling a strange, terrifying sense of belonging.

But the outside world was closing in.

Late on a rainy Thursday night, the red emergency alarms throughout the estate suddenly began to flash silent crimson warnings.

Before I could even step out of my suite, Marcus—Adrian’s chief of security—burst down the hallway. "Miss Vance, secure the room! We have a breach in the perimeter security!"

My blood ran cold. "Where is Adrian?"

"In the underground tactical bunker with the council," Marcus barked over his shoulder as he ran to secure the lower wings. "Stay inside!"

I couldn't just stay inside. Little Elena was sleeping soundly in her crib in the adjoining nursery, but if an assassin had breached the estate, no room was safe. I grabbed a heavy iron fireplace poker from my suite's mantle, crept out into the dark hallway, and made my way silently down the private service staircase toward the lower levels.

The heavy steel doors of the underground tactical bunker were ajar. Inside, raised voices echoed off the concrete walls.

"...you thought you could hide the child forever, Adrian!" a sharp, unfamiliar voice sneered.

I crept closer, peering through the narrow crack in the heavy door.

Inside the bunker stood Adrian, flanked by two bleeding guards. Pinned against the reinforced concrete table at gunpoint was Julian Vance—no, wait—Victor Moretti, Adrian’s own cousin and the second-in-command of the syndicate.

Adrian stood calmly, blood dripping from a shallow cut on his cheek, his dark eyes locked onto his cousin with absolute, frozen hatred.

"You tried to murder an infant, Victor," Adrian’s voice was dangerously quiet. "My flesh and blood. All because you wanted control of the European shipping lanes."

Victor laughed hysterically, pressing a pistol hard against the head of a captured syndicate elder. "The syndicate thinks you’ve gone soft, Adrian! Taking in a stray maid, playing house in the mansion! You’re weak! And now, your little housekeeper girlfriend is next—unless you sign over the North Port shares to me right now!"

My breath hitched in my throat. My hand shook, the iron poker slipping an inch against the stone wall.

A tiny scrape.

Inside the room, Victor’s head snapped toward the door. "Who’s out there?!"

Before Victor could pull the trigger on his hostage, Adrian moved with terrifying, blinding speed. A hidden throwing knife flashed from his sleeve, burying itself deep into Victor’s right wrist.

A blood-curdling scream echoed through the bunker as Victor dropped the gun.

Adrian closed the distance between them in half a second, slamming Victor’s face into the concrete table with a sickening crunch. The room erupted into chaos as loyal Moretti guards swarmed the bunker, subverting Victor’s traitors in a matter of seconds.

Adrian stood chest-heaving over his unconscious cousin, his hands stained with blood. Then, slowly, his dark eyes turned toward the door.

He stared straight through the crack at me.

"Elena," he murmured softly.
