Chapter 4: The Reckoning

Three months later.

The courtroom was packed.

Reporters filled every seat.

Cameras waited outside.

Richard Harrison entered in handcuffs.

Gone were the expensive suits.

Gone was the arrogance.

Gone was the power.

The jury needed less than four hours.

Guilty on every count.

Fraud.

Forgery.

Tax evasion.

Money laundering.

Conspiracy.

The judge sentenced him to twenty-seven years in federal prison.

As deputies led him away, Richard stopped in front of Daniel.

For a moment neither man spoke.

Finally Richard asked the question that had haunted him for decades.

"Did your grandfather ever love me?"

Daniel looked at him quietly.

"He gave you every chance."

Richard lowered his head.

For the first time, there was no anger left.

Only regret.

And then he disappeared through the courtroom doors forever.

Outside, snow was falling again.

Gentle this time.

Peaceful.

Claire stood waiting with Lily in her arms.

The little girl reached toward him.

Daniel smiled and lifted his daughter high into the air.

Months later, he sold the mansion where his parents had thrown his family into the storm.

He donated part of the recovered fortune to military families and homeless shelters.

The rest he placed into a trust for Lily.

One evening, standing on the porch of their new home, Claire slipped her hand into his.

"Do you ever wish you could change what happened?"

Daniel looked at his wife.

Then at his daughter laughing in the yard.

And finally at the sunset stretching across the horizon.

"No."

Claire raised an eyebrow.

"No?"

Daniel smiled.

"If they hadn't thrown us into the cold, I never would have discovered who truly belonged in my life."

Inside the house, Lily's laughter echoed through the halls.

Warm.

Safe.

Loved.

Everything Richard Harrison had spent a lifetime chasing.

May you like

Everything he had lost.

And everything Daniel had finally found.
