Chapter 2 - The Empty Mansion, The Missing Wife, And The Realization That Shattered The Mafia Empire’s Foundation

The silence inside the sprawling Chicago estate was deafening.
For three years, the house had echoed with my footsteps, the soft classical music I played in the mornings, and the quiet meals I prepared while waiting for a husband who rarely came home on time. Now, it felt like a magnificent, gilded mausoleum.
Adrian walked through the double doors of the master suite, his heavy boots clicking against the hardwood floor.
The room was pristine. Too pristine.
He strode over to the walk-in closet and pulled the sliding glass door open. Half of the wardrobe was completely empty. My designer coats, my silk evening gowns, my shoes, and my vanity travel cases were entirely gone. Even the small silver jewelry box on my dressing table—the one containing the simple pearl earrings his mother had given me on our wedding day—had vanished.
A cold knot formed deep in the pit of Adrian’s stomach. A sensation he hadn’t felt in over a decade of running bloody gang wars and hostile corporate takeovers: pure, unadulterated panic.
“Claire?” he called out, his deep voice bouncing off the high ceilings.
No answer. Only the hum of the central air conditioning.
He pulled out his heavy encrypted smartphone and dialed my number.
“The subscriber you have dialed is currently unavailable or outside the network coverage area. Please try again later.”
He cursed loudly, slamming his fist against the bedroom wall, leaving a small dent in the drywall. He immediately dialed his head of private security, Marcus Vance.
“Marcus,” Adrian snapped the moment the line connected, his voice dropping into its most dangerous, authoritative cadence. “Track my wife’s phone right now. Find out where Claire is.”
On the other end of the line, Marcus hesitated, the sound of typing clicking furiously in the background. “Boss… I’m looking at her last known cell tower ping from six hours ago. It registered right inside Terminal 5 at O’Hare.”
Adrian’s breath hitched. “Terminal 5? International flights?”
“Yes, sir. Customs records show she boarded an Air Canada flight bound for Toronto early this morning under her own passport.”
Adrian stared blankly at the wall. “Toronto? Why the hell would she go to Toronto? She has no family there, no business connections—”
“Boss,” Marcus interrupted gently, a rare hint of hesitation in his voice. “There’s something else. Security cameras at the airport show she traveled completely alone with a single suitcase. She didn’t use any of our shared credit cards for the ticket. She paid cash from a private personal account.”
Adrian felt the ground drop out from beneath him. A private personal account? I hadn’t touched the money he deposited into my joint accounts every month? How long had I been preparing for this?
Meanwhile, across town in a high-rise downtown office, Sofia Russo was sitting in her plush apartment scrolling through her phone, a triumphant smirk plastered across her face.
She had won round one.
Claire was gone. The nagging wife who expected respect and loyalty was out of the picture. Sofia assumed that within forty-eight hours, Adrian would invite her to move into the master suite, cementing her position not just as a secretary, but as the true queen of the Chicago underworld.
She dialed Adrian’s private number, layering her voice with manufactured tears.
“Adrian? Are you okay? I heard you rushed home... is Claire still angry with me?”
Adrian stared at his glowing phone screen, seeing Sofia’s name flash across the display. A month ago, hearing that tone would have triggered his protective instincts, making him rush to her side with reassurances and gifts.
Today, looking at the empty closet where my dresses used to hang, a wave of dark, suffocating rage washed over him.
He swiped and rejected the call. For the first time, he didn't call her back.
By afternoon, Adrian’s frustration boiled over into ruthless action. He ordered his entire security team to dig into every detail of my departure. He wanted to know every person I had spoken to, every transaction I had made, and every lawyer I had consulted over the past year.
Marcus arrived at the Chicago mansion within the hour, carrying a thick manila folder into Adrian’s private mahogany study.
“Boss,” Marcus said cautiously, placing the folder on the desk. “You’re not going to like what we found.”
Adrian sat behind his massive desk, his fingers steepled together, his eyes cold as ice. “Talk.”
“We checked your wife’s legal records. Two weeks ago, right after the incident at the gala where she… where you pushed her into the table…” Marcus swallowed hard, avoiding Adrian’s piercing glare. “She retained top-tier divorce attorney Jonathan Vance. Not just any lawyer, Boss. Vance specializes in high-net-worth international asset protection and prenuptial enforcement.”
Adrian stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward onto the floor. “Divorce? She filed for divorce? Without even talking to me? Without giving me a chance to explain?”
“Boss, you didn’t give her a chance to speak either,” Marcus muttered under his breath, though loud enough for Adrian to hear.
Adrian’s head snapped toward him, his eyes flashing with lethal fury. “Watch your tongue, Marcus.”
“I’m just stating facts, sir,” Marcus said, standing his ground. “According to the preliminary paperwork filed with the Cook County court, Mrs. Moretti isn’t just asking for a standard split. Because of the public assault at the gala caught on multiple security cameras and high-society cell phones, combined with financial records showing millions funneled into corporate accounts under Sofia Russo’s name… your wife’s legal team has grounds for a catastrophic dissolution.”
Adrian gripped the edge of the mahogany desk so hard his knuckles turned completely white. The wood began to splinter under his immense grip.
“Sofia’s name?” Adrian growled. “What does Sofia have to do with this?”
Marcus opened the folder, revealing printed bank statements and digital emails. “While you were busy protecting Miss Russo from social embarrassment, your wife’s forensic accountants discovered that over the past six months, Sofia has systematically embezzled nearly half a million dollars from your subsidiary hospitality accounts, routing the funds through offshore shell companies.”
Adrian stared at the papers, completely paralyzed.
“That’s… impossible. Sofia is just a secretary. She manages my schedule.”
“She manages more than your schedule, Boss,” Marcus said grimly. “And your wife discovered it weeks ago. She tried to warn you about Sofia’s financial manipulation multiple times, but every single time she brought it up, you accused Claire of being insecure, jealous, and dramatic.”
The words hit Adrian like a physical blow to the chest.
“Claire, please. Not another dramatic scene.”
“Every time Sofia makes a mistake, you turn it into a disaster.”
The memories of his own dismissive, cruel words replayed in his mind like a horror movie. He remembered the look in my eyes as I sat bleeding on the floor—not anger, but profound, chilling indifference. The look of a woman who had finally realized her love was entirely unreciprocated.
“Find her,” Adrian whispered, his voice cracking slightly. “Find my wife in Toronto. Send a private jet. Bring her back home immediately.”
Marcus looked at him with deep pity. “Boss… you can send a hundred private jets. But Mrs. Moretti left explicit instructions with her legal team in Toronto and Chicago. Anyone from your organization who attempts to approach, track, or harass her will immediately trigger a permanent restraining order and criminal harassment charges filed in an international court.”
Adrian fell back heavily into his chair, staring blindly at the empty desk.
For the first time in his terrifying reign over Chicago, the great Adrian Moretti was completely powerless. His money couldn't buy her back. His armed men couldn't force her home. And his empire felt hollow, built upon the ashes of the only person who had ever truly loved him for who he was beneath the blood and money.
