Chapter 4 - The Threat From The Shadows, The Kidnapping Plot, And The Ultimate Test Of Loyalty Across International Borders

Back in Toronto, my new life was finally taking root.

I had enrolled in an advanced fine arts restoration program, channeling my lifelong passion for antique preservation and history into something creative and fulfilling. I rented a bright, airy loft apartment near the historic Distillery District, surrounded by exposed brick, large windows, and canvases filled with vibrant oil paints.

For the first time in years, I didn't have to look over my shoulder wondering if my husband’s enemies were targeting our home. I didn't have to worry about security threats, bomb-sniffing dogs, or midnight phone calls summoning Adrian into the underworld.

My attorney, Jonathan, continued to handle the final stages of the divorce proceedings, noting that Adrian’s legal team had completely stopped fighting the terms. They weren't contesting a single clause. Adrian was agreeing to every demand, handing over massive financial settlements without a single objection.

He was trying to buy forgiveness with money. And just as before, he fundamentally misunderstood me.

However, peace in the high-stakes underworld never lasts forever.

One evening in late November, as I walked out of my studio building into the chilly twilight, a sleek black town car with tinted windows pulled up abruptly beside the curb.

Before I could turn and run back inside, the rear door swung open, and two burly men in heavy dark coats stepped out, blocking my path.

“Mrs. Moretti,” one of them said smoothly, flashing a familiar corporate security badge. “Mr. Moretti’s primary associate sent us. You need to come with us immediately. It’s an emergency regarding your husband’s safety.”

My heart skipped a beat, not out of fear for Adrian, but out of frustration. “I am not going anywhere with you. Leave me alone right now, or I will call the Toronto police.”

“Ma’am, you don't understand,” the second man insisted, stepping closer. “A rival syndicate from New York has targeted the Chicago operations. They know about your separation, and they view you as his primary vulnerability. There is an active hit squad headed toward your location right now. For your own safety, you must board our private transport.”

Before I could process the warning, the sharp sound of screeching tires echoed down the quiet cobblestone street.

Another vehicle—a black SUV—swerved violently around the corner, cutting off the town car. The doors flew open, and a team of heavily armed men wearing tactical gear burst out.

Chaos erupted in seconds.

Shouts filled the cold air. The two men who had approached me pulled out concealed firearms, exchanging gunfire with the incoming attackers.

I screamed, dropping my art bag as I turned and sprinted back toward the heavy glass doors of my studio building. Glass shattered all around me as bullets ricocheted off the brick walls and stone pavement.

Just as a masked man lunged forward from the shadows, grabbing me roughly by the arm and pulling me toward the alleyway, a thunderous roar echoed through the street.

Another sleek black SUV slammed violently into the side of the attacker’s vehicle, crushing it against a concrete pillar.

The door of the SUV flew open, and a tall, imposing figure stepped out into the freezing Toronto rain.

Adrian Moretti.

His hair was disheveled, his expensive overcoat soaked with rain, and his eyes blazing with a primal, terrifying fury that could rival the devil himself. In his hand, he held a heavy tactical firearm, his aim locked instantly on the man holding my arm.

“Let her go,” Adrian whispered, his voice cutting through the chaos of gunfire like a razor blade. “Or you won't live to see another sunrise.”

The attacker panicked, pulling a knife and pressing it directly against my throat. “Stay back, Moretti! One step closer and I slice her jugular right now!”

Adrian didn’t hesitate for a single microsecond.

With terrifying precision, he raised his weapon and fired. A single, flawless shot pierced the attacker’s shoulder, instantly neutralizing him. The man screamed, releasing his grip and collapsing onto the wet pavement.

I stumbled backward, breathless, shaking from head to toe as cold rain mixed with tears on my cheeks.

Adrian dropped his weapon, sprinting across the pavement toward me. He dropped to his knees right in front of me, his hands hovering frantically over my shoulders as if afraid I would shatter at his touch.

“Claire! Claire, are you okay? Did they hurt you? Tell me where you’re bleeding!” he shouted, his voice cracking with raw, unadulterated terror.

I stared down at him, my chest heaving, the adrenaline still rushing through my veins.

“Why are you here, Adrian?” I managed to whisper, my voice shaking. “How did you even find me?”

“I never stopped looking,” Adrian choked out, pulling me gently into his arms, shielding my body against his chest despite the pouring rain. “When my intelligence network intercepted chatter about a cross-border hit squad targeting you because of my enemies, I didn't care about the Chicago empire. I didn't care about the corporate boards. I chartered a private chopper and flew straight through a hurricane just to get to you.”

I pushed against his chest, separating myself from his embrace. The rain drenched us both, but the space between us felt wider than the entire continent.

“You came here to save me?” I asked bitterly. “Just like you protected your secretary at the gala? Just like you pushed me into a table to defend someone else’s mistake?”

Adrian flinched as if struck by lightning. Tears mixed with the rain on his face.

“I was a blind, arrogant fool, Claire,” he confessed, his voice breaking completely as Chicago’s most feared Mafia boss knelt in the dirt of a Toronto alleyway, weeping openly in front of his wife. “I spent seven years building an empire to protect you from the world, completely failing to realize that the biggest danger to your happiness... was me.”

I looked down at him, the cold wind howling around us, waiting to see what the final chapter of our shattered story would bring.
