Chapter 3 - The Empire Begins to BleedBy sunrise, the financial and criminal landscape of Chicago was in a state of absolute, unmitigated panic.

Dante Moretti had spent twenty-four hours tearing through his own penthouse, interrogating terrified staff members, and threatening half his syndicate captains, but I had vanished completely off the grid. No credit card activity, no flight records under my name, and no trace of my whereabouts. The only clue left behind was the platinum ring sitting mockingly on his speech podium—a public humiliation broadcast live to every news outlet in the Midwest.
Inside the sleek, hyper-modern glass-walled conference room of Moretti Global Enterprises on the forty-fifth floor, the atmosphere felt less like a corporate board meeting and more like a war bunker.
Dante sat at the head of the long oak table, looking like a man who hadn't slept a wink. His dark hair was disheveled, his jaw shadowed by dark stubble, and his custom Brioni suit looked rumpled. Spread across the table were emergency market reports showing a sudden, catastrophic drop in Moretti stock value.
"Explain to me how a federal audit subpoena hits our primary logistics accounts twelve hours after a domestic dispute!" Dante roared, slamming his fist against the wood so hard the crystal water pitchers rattled.
Marcus Vance stood nervously near the window, wiping sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. "Boss... we don't know. The Department of Justice's Racketeering Task Force just raided our North Harbor shipping docks thirty minutes ago. They seized three hundred containers of high-end contraband and froze all primary operating capital."
"That's impossible!" Dante snarled, standing up so fast his chair tipped over backward. "Those accounts are protected by three layers of offshore shell corporations! Only I and... and..."
His voice trailed off abruptly. The terrifying realization hit him like a physical blow to the chest.
Only he and I had the security clearance to access those master shell corporation ledgers. For eight years, Dante had treated me like a silent accessory, never once suspecting that while he slept, his quiet, obedient wife was quietly memorizing, copying, and cataloging every illegal transaction he had ever made.
"She didn't just leave," Dante whispered, horror dawning in his dark eyes. "She gutted us."
Before Marcus could respond, the heavy glass doors of the conference room swung open without warning.
Two armed federal marshals in tactical vests stepped into the room, flanked by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Vance. Behind them walked a woman in a sharp, tailored charcoal-grey pantsuit, her hair pulled back into a sleek knot, wearing dark tortoiseshell sunglasses.
I stopped right at the foot of the conference table, slowly removing my sunglasses.
Dante stared at me as if I were a ghost risen from the grave. For a second, the fearsome, untouchable syndicate boss looked entirely human—small, cornered, and utterly devastated.
"Elena..." Dante breathed out, taking an involuntary step forward around the table. "Where the hell have you been? Do you have any idea what you've done? Let's go home, we can settle this privately—"
"Stop right there, Dante," I said, my voice cutting through the silent room with the cold, absolute authority of a federal prosecutor.
I opened the leather portfolio in my hands and slid a thick stack of certified legal documents across the mahogany table directly toward him.
"What is this?" Dante asked, his hands trembling slightly as he looked down at the papers.
"That," I replied calmly, "is a comprehensive federal indictment charging Moretti Global Enterprises, its subsidiaries, and you personally with racketeering, tax evasion, interstate wire fraud, and obstruction of justice. Signed by a federal grand jury this morning."
Marcus Vance gasped, backing away toward the wall as if standing near Dante would instantly brand him a criminal accessory.
Dante ignored the papers. His dark eyes burned into mine with a desperate, frantic intensity. "Elena, look at me. You're my wife. You can't testify against me—marital privilege protects us! Drop this insanity, come back home, and I swear to God I'll give you whatever you want. Do you want control of the estate? Do you want half the fortune? Name your price!"
I let out a cold, humorless laugh that made the remaining color drain from his face.
"My price, Dante?" I stepped closer, resting my palms flat on the conference table and leaning down to meet his gaze directly. "Ten years ago, my father gave you a clean start when your own family disowned you. You promised to build an honest, legitimate real estate legacy. Instead, you turned his vision into a criminal enterprise, and when he tried to walk away, you engineered his financial ruin."
Dante froze. His pupils dilated in absolute shock. "You... you know about that?"
"I knew about it all along," I whispered, every word dripping with ice. "I stayed for eight years not because I was afraid of you, Dante, but because I needed to make sure I had enough evidence to ensure you never saw the light of day again. You told the room last night that I wasn't like Bianca—that I didn't have edge, presence, or ambition."
May you like
I straightened up, adjusting my jacket lapel with absolute poise.
"You were right, Dante. I’m not like Bianca. I don't need to chase power. I am the power."
