Chapter 2 - Fifteen Men, Three Black SUVs, and the Midnight Hunt Across Manhattan

The executive medical suite felt more like a luxury five-star hotel room than a recovery ward, yet my mind refused to quiet down. Outside the heavy double doors, heavy boots paced rhythmically—Damon's elite security detail ensuring my absolute safety. On the bedside table, my phone lit up with a notification from Saint Vincent’s Hospital. *Account Balance: $0.00. Status: Paid in full for the next 365 days.* A fresh wave of hot tears spilled over my cheeks. For over a year, I had carried the suffocating weight of my mother's impending death, waking up every single day terrified that the collection calls would cut off her life-saving dialysis. Now, in less than thirty minutes, a man I had spent months avoiding out of sheer intimidation had erased every single burden I carried.

But as much as relief washed over me, terror quickly took its place. What would happen when Senator Caldwell realized his only son had been snatched off the streets of Manhattan by the Blackwell syndicate?

Miles away, in the heart of the city's concrete jungle, the hunt was reaching its explosive climax.

Preston Caldwell leaned back plush leather upholstery of his armored Mercedes-Maybach, laughing loudly as his hand swirled amber whiskey in a crystal glass. "Did you see the look on that pathetic maid's face when her arm snapped?" he sneered, looking across the cabin at his closest cronies, Chad and Miller. "These low-class rats think they can just exist in our spaces without paying a toll. If my old man finds out, he'll just pay off the cops again anyway."

Chad grinned, adjusting his expensive silk tie. "Man, that place is a fortress, though. You've got balls messing around on Blackwell's third floor. Everyone knows Damon doesn't tolerate bullshit in his own house."

"Damon Blackwell is a businessman, not a god," Preston scoffed, tossing back the rest of his drink. "My father dines with federal judges. Blackwell wouldn't risk an international incident over a nobody maid who cleans toilets for a living."

Suddenly, the Maybach jerked violently, screeching to a halt as the tires locked against the wet asphalt.

"What the hell is the driver doing?" Miller cursed, grabbing the overhead handle as the car swerved.

Before anyone could answer, a massive armored black truck materialized out of nowhere, slamming sideways to block the front, while two identical vehicles locked them in from behind. The doors of the surrounding vehicles flew open simultaneously. Men in reinforced tactical gear, faces obscured by matte black balaclavas, moved with terrifying, clockwork precision.

Preston's arrogant smirk vanished instantly. "Security! Call my father—"

Before he could finish his sentence, the reinforced glass of the passenger window shattered into a million glittering fragments under the heavy strike of a tactical buttstock. A gloved hand reached inside, unlatched the door from the inside, and yanked Chad out onto the pavement with a sickening thud.

"What is the meaning of this?! Do you know who my father is?!" Preston screamed, scrambling backward as cold steel was pressed directly against his forehead.

A tall figure stepped into the dim amber light of the streetlamp, his sharp jawline shadowed beneath a heavy wool overcoat. Matteo lowered his weapon just enough to look down at Preston with utter contempt.

"Mr. Caldwell," Matteo said, his voice dripping with deadly amusement. "Boss Blackwell sends his regards. And trust me... your father already knows. In fact, he's waiting for you right now."

Before Preston could draw another breath, a heavy burlap hood was dropped over his head, plunging him into total darkness as he was hoisted off his feet and thrown violently into the back of the transport van. Across the city, fourteen other arrogant young men met the exact same fate, pulled from clubs, penthouses, and private lounges in a sweeping, flawless military-grade operation. The midnight hunt was over. The reckoning had begun.
