Chapter 4 - The Algorithm of Power

In the two weeks following the boardroom execution, the Chicago underworld experienced a seismic shift.

Vincent launched a swift, ruthless crusade against the Russian Bratva. Guided by Penny's incredible data analytics and financial mapping, the Castellano syndicate systematically dismantled every single Russian supply line, seized their offshore accounts, and eliminated Nikolai Volkov's top lieutenants before the Bratva even realized how their network had been breached.

Penny didn't return to her cramped South Side apartment, nor did she ever wear a maid's uniform again.

Vincent had moved her permanently into the master wing of the estate. Her inherited debt was officially shredded in front of the entire syndicate, and Vincent appointed her as the Chief Strategic Analyst of Castellano Enterprises—a brand-new executive position created specifically for her.

Her small bedroom had been replaced by a sprawling suite overlooking the estate's private lake, complete with a state-of-the-art data hub equipped with multi-monitor setups and high-speed encrypted servers.

Every evening, after the syndicate's business was concluded, Vincent would come to her private study. The terrifying Don of Chicago would shed his heavy gun holster, sit on the sofa beside her, and drink black espresso while listening to her explain complex financial algorithms.

"You're working too late, Penelope," Vincent said softly one rainy evening, stepping into her study holding two cups of fresh coffee.

Penny smiled, taking off her blue-light glasses and rubbing her tired eyes. "I'm just finalizing the takeover paperwork for the Kensington real estate portfolio. Your legal team will have total control of their downtown towers by tomorrow morning."

Vincent set the coffee down on her desk and leaned against the edge, staring down at her.

Over the past month, freed from the suffocating, oversized maid uniforms and the cruel taunts of the domestic staff, Penny had completely blossomed. She wore beautiful, tailored silk blouses that embraced her soft curves, her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders in rich waves, and her eyes sparkled with an unshakeable, brilliant confidence.

To Vincent, she was the most captivating, beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes on—far more exquisite than any shallow, artificial socialite he had ever known.

"You saved my life, Penny," Vincent said quietly, his voice dropping into a tender register that made her heart leap in her chest. "And you rebuilt my empire."

Penny looked up into his intense dark eyes, feeling a warm blush spread across her cheeks. "I was just doing my job, Vincent."

"No," Vincent corrected softly, reaching out to gently trace the curve of her jawline with his broad thumb. "You were never just doing a job. And I am tired of pretending that you are just my chief analyst."

Penny caught her breath, her hand resting against his chest, feeling the heavy, rapid thud of his heartbeat. "Vincent... I'm not the kind of woman men in your position choose. I'm not a high-society heiress. I'm—"

"You are worth more than a thousand empty heiresses," Vincent interrupted fiercely, leaning down until his lips were inches from hers. "You are brilliant, loyal, courageous, and breathtaking. I don't give a damn about society, Penny. I care about the woman who stood in the dark and saved my life."

Before she could process his words, Vincent leaned down and captured her lips in a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss that completely erased three years of pain, insecurity, and fear.

Penny closed her eyes, wrapping her arms around his neck, sinking into his warmth as the rain hammered peacefully against the study windows.
