Chapter 2 - The Hidden Safe Behind The Portrait, The Stolen Flash Drive, And The Midnight Confession In The LibraryThe grand grandfather clock in the main hall struck midnight, its heavy chimes echoing through the empty corridors like warning bells. I stood trembling in Daniel Carver's private study, my fingers slick with cold sweat as I stared at the massive oil painting of his late grandfather.

Behind that canvas lay a biometric wall safe.
Just twenty minutes earlier, I had overheard Daniel arguing with his uncle on the private terrace. Their words had cut through the freezing night air like a knife.
"The federal investigators are closing in on the Whitlock shipping docks," the uncle hissed. "If they find out Aaron was digging into the offshore accounts before his boat mysteriously sank, your entire engagement to Claire—and this family's legacy—is finished."
Daniel's cold voice had replied without a shred of hesitation: "Let them look. The ledger is secure. No one touches my family's empire, and no one touches the truth."
Aaron wasn't killed by a random accident. He was murdered because he found the ledger.
And now, standing alone in the dark study, I pressed my palm against the biometric scanner Martin had secretly helped me bypass using a duplicate administrative keycard he had slipped into my apron pocket hours before.
Click.
The heavy steel door swung open silently.
Inside sat a single black leather folder and a small encrypted USB flash drive labeled Project Harbor - Aaron M.
Tears blurred my vision. My sweet, hardworking Aaron. They had stolen his life, framed him for a debt he never owed, and tried to bury his memory in the cold ocean. I reached out, my fingers wrapping around the flash drive just as the study doors swung wide open.
"Looking for something, Elena?"
I spun around, my breath catching in my throat.
Daniel Carver stood in the doorway, his silhouette illuminated by the pale moonlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket anymore; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and his eyes burned with a dark, dangerous intensity that made my knees weaken.
He didn't call security. He didn't yell. Instead, he slowly closed the study door behind him and locked it with a sharp metallic click.
"You're playing a very dangerous game, little maid," Daniel murmured, taking a deliberate step toward me. "Stealing from a Carver usually ends with a body floating in the Hudson River."
"You killed my husband," I whispered, my voice shaking with a fury that overpowered my terror. "You and your corporate partners murdered Aaron because he found out about your illegal smuggling ring!"
Daniel froze. The cold, untouchable billionaire facade cracked instantly, replaced by a flash of raw, unfiltered shock. He stared at me—not as a servant, not as an intruder, but as if he were seeing a ghost.
"Aaron... Miller?" Daniel breathed, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "You're Aaron's wife?"
"Yes," I spat out, raising my chin despite the tears streaming down my face. "He told me everything before he died. He said if anything ever happened to him, I should look for Daniel Carver because you were the only man in this family with an ounce of honor left. But I was wrong. You're just like the rest of them!"
Daniel closed the remaining distance between us with terrifying speed. Before I could flinch, his large hands gripped my shoulders—not to hurt me, but to steady me as a sudden wave of dizziness made me sway. His touch was warm, surprisingly gentle, yet electric.
"Listen to me very carefully, Elena," Daniel said, his gaze locked intensely onto mine. "I never ordered Aaron's death. In fact, I spent the last eight months trying to find out who sabotaged his boat. My own family thinks I'm weak because I want to clean up this empire. And that flash drive in your hand?" He pointed a finger at the device clutched in my palm. "That contains the proof that Claire's father—not me—framed your husband and murdered your brother."
My breath hitched. "What?"
"Claire's family is using my name to cover up a massive drug and weapon trafficking operation," Daniel continued, his jaw clenched tight with suppressed rage. "They forced this engagement on me to merge our companies and silence my internal audits. Tonight, when Claire humiliated you in front of my guests, she didn't just insult my maid... she declared war on the only woman I've ever secretly loved since the day you stepped foot into this estate."

The silence in the room grew deafening. I stared into his dark, troubled eyes, searching for any sign of deception, but found only a burning, desperate sincerity.
"If you want justice for Aaron," Daniel whispered, leaning in so close I could feel his warm breath against my cheek, "you're going to have to trust the devil himself. Because tomorrow morning, we're going to destroy them all."
