Chapter 3 - The Bloodline's Secret

The private master suite on the top floor of the Romano estate was an impenetrable fortress. High above the bustling city, the room was quiet, lit only by the warm amber glow of a massive stone fireplace and the distant lights of the Chicago skyline reflecting off the lake.

I sat on the edge of a velvet sofa while Dr. Harrison, the family’s private physician, meticulously cleaned and bandaged my crushed knuckles.

“No broken bones, thank God,” Dr. Harrison reported softly, wrapping fresh white gauze around my hand. “Severe lacerations and soft tissue bruising. Keep it clean, take the antibiotics, and avoid heavy lifting for two weeks.”

“Thank you, Doctor,” I murmured.

Once the doctor packed his bag and left the suite, the heavy oak doors clicked shut, leaving Gabriel and me alone in the vast, warm room.

Gabriel stood near the glass windows, holding a crystal glass of amber scotch. He had unbuttoned his collar, rolling his sleeves up his forearms, revealing the dark, intricate ink of his family tattoos. He took a slow sip, his sharp jawline tight with lingering tension.

I looked down at the soft white bandages covering my hand, then at the heavy charcoal suit jacket resting over the arm of the sofa.

“You didn't have to exile your mother, Gabriel,” I said quietly, breaking the silence. “She’s an arrogant woman, but... she’s still your mother. The press will have a field day with the rumors.”

Gabriel set his glass down onto the marble side table with a soft click. He walked across the room with heavy, deliberate steps, stopping right in front of me. He dropped down onto one knee, bringing himself to eye level with me—a gesture of profound humility that I had never expected from a man like Gabriel Romano.

“My mother has spent six months treating you like an outsider, Catherine,” Gabriel spoke softly, his gray eyes burning with an intense, raw honesty. “I allowed it because I thought keeping a distance between us would protect you from the dangerous politics of my family. I thought if they believed our marriage was merely a cold business transaction, they wouldn't view you as a target.”

He reached out, his warm, broad hand gently cupping the side of my face, his thumb softly brushing against my cheekbone.

“I was wrong,” Gabriel whispered. “My distance didn't protect you. It made them believe you were defenseless.”

My heart skipped a heavy beat. The air between us felt charged with an electric, overwhelming intensity.

“Why did you really go to the vault corridor today, Catherine?” Gabriel asked softly, searching my eyes. “You could have alerted my guards. You could have stayed safe in your room.”

I swallowed hard, pulling my smartphone from my clutch and handing it to him.

He scanned the threatening text messages regarding my father’s life and the stolen silver. A dark, terrifying aura instantly flared around him, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.

“Vittorio sent these,” Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a lethal register.

“I couldn't let them hurt my dad, Gabriel,” I confessed, tears pricking the back of my eyes. “And... I couldn't let them destroy you. If that silver had been found in the Vance territory tomorrow, your men would have marched into a trap.”

Gabriel stared at me for a long, breathless moment. He raised his hand, his thumb gently catching a stray tear that had escaped down my cheek.

“You bled for my name today, Catherine,” Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with deep emotion. “A name I never properly gave you the honor of wearing.”

He reached into his vest pocket, pulled out a velvet-lined jewelry box, and opened it in front of me.

Inside lay a breathtaking, antique ring crafted from black platinum and set with a flawless, brilliant-cut oval diamond—the legendary Romano Sovereign Ring, worn only by the reigning matriarch of the empire.

My breath caught in my throat. “Gabriel... that’s your grandmother’s ring. That belongs to the head of the family.”

“It belongs to the woman who stands beside me,” Gabriel corrected firmly.

He took my left hand, gently sliding the heavy platinum ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly, gleaming brilliantly against the firelight.

“Starting tonight, Catherine,” Gabriel swore softly, looking straight into my soul, “there are no separate rooms. There are no business contracts. You are my wife, my equal, and the undisputed Queen of this empire. And anyone who dares to cross you... will answer directly to me.”

Before I could draw a breath, he leaned in and captured my lips in a deep, slow, breathtaking kiss that swept away six months of doubt, fear, and cold distance. I melted into his warm embrace, wrapping my uninjured arm around his broad neck, kissing him back with all the pent-up passion resting in my heart.
