Chapter 2 - HIS PREGNANT WIFE HID FROM THE MAFIA EMPIRE HE BUILT—BUT WHEN SHE OPENED HER DEAD FATHER'S SECRET FILE, SHE DISCOVERED WHY HIS RIGHT-HAND MAN WANTED HER UNBORN SON

Evelyn Bennett had not slept in thirty-one hours.

She sat beside the window of a small Connecticut guesthouse, watching rain move across the garden.

Her suitcase stood near the door.

Her phone lay facedown on the table.

And her son moved gently beneath her ribs.

She placed a hand over her stomach.

"It's all right, Noah."

She wished she believed it.

The guesthouse belonged to her father's oldest friend, Margaret Ellis.

Margaret had once worked as a financial investigator for the state.

Now retired, she lived alone in a quiet house surrounded by maple trees.

When Evelyn called before dawn, Margaret had not asked questions.

She had simply said:

"Come here."

Evelyn had driven for hours with her hands trembling on the steering wheel.

She knew someone was following her.

The black sedan appeared outside the Bennett estate.

It remained behind her through two highway exits.

Then disappeared near the Connecticut border.

Evelyn had stopped at a gas station to calm herself.

That was when she noticed the man taking photographs.

She returned to her vehicle and drove directly to Margaret's house.

Now she sat with a cup of tea she could not finish.

Margaret entered carrying a folder.

"Evelyn, we need to talk about your father."

Evelyn looked up.

"My father?"

Margaret sat across from her.

"Before he died, he left something with me."

Evelyn frowned.

Her father, Thomas Grace, had been an accountant.

Quiet.

Gentle.

The kind of man who repaired old radios and remembered everyone's birthday.

He died five years earlier after a sudden illness.

Evelyn had never connected him to the Bennett family.

Margaret opened the folder.

Inside were bank statements.

Corporate records.

And a photograph of Thomas standing beside a younger Daniel Kessler.

Evelyn stared.

"Why is my father with Daniel?"

Margaret's expression grew serious.

"Because your father discovered something Daniel wanted hidden."

***

Years earlier, Thomas had worked for a financial services company that handled accounts for several Bennett-connected businesses.

He noticed unusual transfers.

Payments moving through shell corporations.

Funds disappearing from legitimate construction projects.

Thomas began documenting the irregularities.

He believed the money was being diverted by Daniel Kessler and several associates.

But before he could complete his report, he became seriously ill.

Margaret had always suspected he was frightened.

Now, looking at Evelyn, she wondered whether he had been frightened for good reason.

"He gave me these documents," Margaret said. "He told me to keep them safe until someone needed them."

Evelyn looked down.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because he asked me not to involve you."

Evelyn felt tears rise.

Her father had spent his final months protecting her from something she had never known existed.

Margaret continued.

"Daniel knew who you were when you married Adrien."

Evelyn froze.

"What?"

"He knew you were Thomas Grace's daughter."

Evelyn stared at the photograph.

Daniel had attended her wedding.

He had smiled.

Congratulated her.

Called her family.

She suddenly remembered the way he sometimes asked about her father's old papers.

The questions had seemed harmless.

Now they felt deliberate.

***

At the Bennett estate, Adrien sat across from Marcus Hale.

The security director had assembled a timeline.

Daniel's unexplained absences.

Unauthorized security changes.

Payments to outside contractors.

And the deleted footage from the east gate.

"How long?" Adrien asked.

Marcus hesitated.

"Possibly years."

Adrien looked at him.

"And nobody noticed?"

"We noticed inconsistencies. Daniel explained them."

Adrien closed his eyes.

Of course he had.

Daniel had always been the person Adrien trusted to solve problems.

Now he wondered how many problems Daniel had created.

Marcus continued.

"There's something else."

He placed a photograph on the desk.

Olivia Hart.

Leaving a restaurant with Daniel Kessler.

Adrien stared.

"When?"

"Three weeks ago."

Adrien looked up.

"Why were they meeting?"

"We don't know."

Adrien remembered Olivia asking questions about Evelyn's pregnancy.

Her due date.

The baby's name.

Whether Adrien intended to change his will.

At the time, he had dismissed them as curiosity.

Now every question sounded different.

***

Evelyn spent the afternoon reviewing her father's documents.

She discovered references to a holding company called Northbridge Holdings.

It controlled several investments connected to the Bennett organization.

Some were legitimate.

Others appeared to have been used to conceal diverted funds.

One document contained a handwritten note.

KESSLER KNOWS ABOUT THE TRUST.

Evelyn frowned.

"What trust?"

Margaret looked at the page.

"I don't know."

Then Evelyn found a second envelope.

Inside was a copy of an old legal agreement.

It concerned a family trust established by Adrien's grandfather.

The document included provisions governing succession and certain inherited assets.

Evelyn read carefully.

Then stopped.

The trust named future direct descendants of Adrien Bennett as potential beneficiaries.

Her unborn son.

Noah.

Evelyn's mouth went dry.

"Margaret."

The older woman looked up.

Evelyn turned the page.

"If Adrien has a child, Daniel loses access to some of these assets."

Margaret leaned forward.

Together, they reviewed the provisions.

Daniel had been appointed to an administrative role during a period when Adrien had no children.

But the trust contemplated a transition to independent trustees when a direct heir was born.

The exact legal consequences would require professional review.

Still, the possible motive was clear.

Noah's birth threatened Daniel's financial control.

Evelyn placed both hands over her stomach.

For the first time, she understood why someone had photographed her outside Dr. Lang's office.

They were not merely watching Adrien's wife.

They were watching the unborn child who could expose years of theft.

***

That evening, Adrien called Eleanor Shaw, the attorney representing Evelyn in the divorce.

Eleanor answered cautiously.

"Mr. Bennett."

"I need to speak to Evelyn."

"She has asked for no direct contact."

Adrien swallowed.

"I know."

"Then why are you calling?"

"Because I believe she's in danger."

Eleanor was silent.

Adrien continued.

"I'm not asking you to tell me where she is. I'm asking you to warn her."

He explained the photograph.

The security breach.

Daniel's disappearance.

The possible connection to Olivia.

Eleanor listened.

Then said:

"I'll pass along the information."

Adrien closed his eyes.

"Thank you."

"Mr. Bennett?"

"Yes?"

"If you truly want to protect her, don't make her choose between her safety and her freedom."

The words struck him.

"I won't."

***

Evelyn received Eleanor's call an hour later.

She listened without interrupting.

When Eleanor mentioned Olivia, Evelyn felt something cold settle in her stomach.

Olivia had not simply been Adrien's mistress.

She had been asking questions about the baby.

Evelyn remembered an afternoon at a charity luncheon.

Olivia had approached her with a bright smile.

"Seven months already?"

Evelyn had nodded.

Olivia touched her own necklace.

"Adrien must be thrilled."

Evelyn had smiled politely.

"He is."

It had been a lie.

Adrien had barely attended her appointments.

Olivia continued.

"Does he know whether it's a boy?"

Evelyn had hesitated.

"Yes."

Olivia's smile widened.

"How wonderful."

Now Evelyn wondered who had sent Olivia to ask.

***

The following morning, Margaret drove Evelyn to a meeting with an independent attorney specializing in trusts and estates.

The lawyer, Caroline Brooks, reviewed the documents.

Her expression grew serious.

"These papers suggest possible misconduct, but we need the complete trust records."

Evelyn nodded.

"Can we get them?"

"Through proper legal channels, yes."

Caroline looked at her.

"And you should contact law enforcement about the surveillance and threats."

Evelyn placed a hand on her stomach.

"I already have."

Caroline smiled gently.

"Good."

***

That afternoon, Evelyn received a message from Adrien.

It came through Eleanor.

A short note.

I know I have no right to ask you to trust me. I am cooperating with the investigation. I will not send anyone to your location or interfere with your decisions. Please stay safe. I'm sorry for everything I did to make you feel alone.

Evelyn read it twice.

Then placed the phone down.

She did not answer.

Not yet.

Because she had spent too many nights accepting apologies that changed nothing.

This time, she needed actions.

***

Three days later, investigators located a storage unit rented through a company associated with Daniel Kessler.

Inside were financial records.

Burner phones.

And surveillance photographs.

Several showed Evelyn.

Others showed Adrien.

One showed Olivia entering a private office.

Marcus reviewed the evidence with investigators.

Then called Adrien.

"Boss."

Adrien stood.

"What is it?"

"We found Daniel's backup records."

"And?"

Marcus hesitated.

"There's a payment schedule."

Adrien's chest tightened.

"To whom?"

"Olivia Hart."

Adrien closed his eyes.

"How much?"

"Two million dollars."

Silence.

Marcus continued.

"And the final installment was scheduled for the day your son was expected to be born."

Adrien gripped the desk.

He had believed his affair was the worst betrayal he had committed.

Now he understood that his selfishness had opened a door for something far more dangerous.

Olivia had been using him.

Daniel had been using Olivia.

May you like

And Evelyn had been standing alone in the middle of their plan.
