Chapter 3 - THE MAFIA BOSS DISCOVERED HIS MISTRESS WAS WORKING WITH HIS OLDEST FRIEND—BUT WHEN HIS PREGNANT WIFE WENT INTO EARLY LABOR, HE HAD TO CHOOSE BETWEEN REVENGE AND BECOMING A FATHER

Olivia Hart had always understood how powerful men thought.

They liked to believe they were choosing.

Choosing the restaurant.

Choosing the woman.

Choosing the future.

Olivia had learned that the easiest way to influence a man like Adrien Bennett was to make every suggestion feel like his own idea.

She never demanded that he leave Evelyn.

She simply listened when he complained.

Never asked him to miss an appointment.

She merely scheduled their meetings when she knew Evelyn needed him.

Never openly criticized his wife.

She only smiled and said:

"Pregnancy changes people."

Adrien had believed her.

Because believing Olivia allowed him to avoid looking at himself.

***

When investigators questioned Olivia about her meetings with Daniel Kessler, she denied everything.

"Daniel handles business matters," she said.

"Sometimes he asked me to deliver documents."

The investigator placed a bank record on the table.

Olivia's face changed.

Two million dollars.

Transferred in installments through companies associated with Daniel.

She stared at the paper.

"That isn't what it looks like."

The investigator waited.

Olivia swallowed.

"Daniel said it was consulting compensation."

"For what services?"

She looked away.

The investigator leaned forward.

"Ms. Hart, we have evidence that you obtained private information about Evelyn Bennett's pregnancy."

Olivia went still.

"Did Daniel ask you to do that?"

She said nothing.

"Did you know Evelyn was being followed?"

Olivia closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

"I didn't know they were going to hurt her."

***

Adrien learned about Olivia's statement later that afternoon.

He sat alone in his office.

For a long time, he stared at the wall.

He had once believed he could separate his marriage from his business.

His affair from his responsibilities.

His private choices from the world he controlled.

Now he saw how foolish that belief had been.

Every decision had consequences.

Every secret created leverage.

And every person he allowed close to him gained access to parts of his life that should have been protected.

He called Marcus.

"Where's Daniel?"

"We believe he's still in New York."

Adrien stood.

"Then find him."

Marcus hesitated.

"Adrien, the investigators are already working on it."

Adrien looked at him.

For years, his instinct would have been to handle the problem himself.

To summon men.

Make threats.

Demand answers.

But Evelyn's letter returned to him.

Do not turn this into one of your wars.

Adrien closed his eyes.

Then sat down.

"You're right."

Marcus looked surprised.

Adrien continued.

"Give the investigators everything they need."

***

In Connecticut, Evelyn was trying to live a normal day.

She had spent the morning organizing baby clothes in Margaret's guest room.

Small blue pajamas.

Soft blankets.

Tiny socks that looked impossibly delicate.

Margaret watched from the doorway.

"You're nesting."

Evelyn smiled.

"I'm making sure I don't forget anything."

Margaret laughed.

"You've checked the hospital bag three times."

"Four."

They both laughed.

For a moment, Evelyn felt almost peaceful.

Then a sharp pain moved across her lower abdomen.

She stopped.

Margaret noticed immediately.

"Evelyn?"

"It's probably nothing."

Another pain followed.

Evelyn gripped the edge of the dresser.

Margaret crossed the room.

"Sit down."

Evelyn shook her head.

"I think we need to call the doctor."

***

At the hospital, physicians evaluated Evelyn for possible preterm labor.

Her blood pressure was elevated.

She was frightened.

And the stress of the previous weeks had taken a toll.

Dr. Lang coordinated with the Connecticut medical team.

The baby was being monitored carefully.

Evelyn lay in the hospital bed with one hand over her stomach.

Margaret sat beside her.

"You need to rest."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"I know."

Then she whispered:

"I'm scared."

Margaret took her hand.

"I know, sweetheart."

***

Adrien learned about the hospitalization through Eleanor.

She called him at eight forty that evening.

"Mr. Bennett."

He stood immediately.

"Is Evelyn all right?"

"She's in the hospital."

His chest tightened.

"What happened?"

"Possible early labor. The medical team is monitoring her."

Adrien closed his eyes.

"Can I come?"

Eleanor was silent.

Then said:

"That's Evelyn's decision."

Adrien swallowed.

"Please ask her."

***

Evelyn stared at the phone after Eleanor relayed the request.

She wanted to say no.

She wanted to protect herself from the pain of seeing him.

But she also remembered the list in the nursery.

Read to him so he recognizes my voice.

Take one picture with my hand on Mom's stomach.

Attend the thirty-week ultrasound.

Adrien had missed every opportunity.

Part of her wanted him to understand what that absence had cost.

Another part wanted her son to have a father who showed up.

Evelyn looked at Margaret.

"What would you do?"

Margaret considered the question.

"I'd ask myself what I wanted. Not what he wanted. Not what anyone expected."

Evelyn looked down.

Then whispered:

"I want him to come."

***

Adrien arrived at the hospital two hours later.

He entered the room slowly.

No guards.

No expensive gifts.

No entourage.

Just a man who looked as though he had not slept in days.

Evelyn lay against the pillows.

Her face was pale.

He stopped near the doorway.

"Hi."

She looked at him.

"Hi."

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Adrien asked:

"How are you feeling?"

"Tired."

He nodded.

"And Noah?"

"The doctors say he's doing well."

Adrien exhaled.

He moved closer.

"Can I sit?"

Evelyn nodded.

He sat beside the bed.

Then looked at her stomach.

His eyes filled.

"I'm sorry."

Evelyn looked away.

Adrien continued.

"I know I've said it before. And I know saying it doesn't fix anything."

She said nothing.

He swallowed.

"I was selfish. I made you feel alone. I lied. And I let another woman become more important than the promises I made to you."

Evelyn's eyes filled.

Adrien continued.

"I don't expect you to forgive me."

She looked at him.

"Then why are you here?"

He considered the question.

"Because you said I could come."

Evelyn stared.

Adrien looked down.

"And because I want to be here for our son."

***

A nurse entered to check the monitors.

Adrien stood.

Evelyn watched him move aside.

He asked questions.

Listened carefully.

Did not interrupt.

When the nurse left, Adrien sat again.

Evelyn looked at him.

"Do you know what hurt most?"

He shook his head.

"Not Olivia."

His expression changed.

"Not even the lying."

She swallowed.

"It was the way you made me feel unreasonable for wanting my husband."

Adrien closed his eyes.

Evelyn continued.

"I kept thinking I was asking too much."

Her voice broke.

"I wanted you to come home. To eat dinner with me. To ask about the baby."

Tears moved down her cheeks.

"I wanted you to want us."

Adrien covered his face.

For a long moment, he could not speak.

Then he whispered:

"I did want you."

Evelyn shook her head.

"You wanted me to be there when you were ready."

He looked up.

"And that's not the same thing."

Adrien nodded.

"No."

***

They sat in silence.

Then Evelyn reached for the ultrasound photograph beside her bed.

She handed it to him.

Adrien stared.

Noah's profile.

A tiny hand near his face.

The curve of his head.

Adrien's eyes filled.

"He's beautiful."

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"He's stubborn."

Adrien laughed through tears.

"Like his mother."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Like both of us."

For a moment, they smiled at each other.

Then Evelyn looked away.

The moment was tender.

But it did not erase what had happened.

***

The following morning, Evelyn's condition stabilized.

The medical team continued monitoring her and planned follow-up care.

Adrien remained nearby, but he did not insist on staying in her room.

He asked permission before visiting.

He respected her decisions.

And when she needed rest, he left.

It was a small beginning.

But for Evelyn, it mattered.

***

Three days later, investigators located Daniel Kessler.

He had been hiding in a property owned through one of his shell companies.

He was arrested without incident.

The financial records and surveillance evidence became central to the case.

Olivia agreed to cooperate with investigators.

The full scope of Daniel's scheme would take months to uncover.

But one fact was already clear.

He had used Adrien's trust to build a private network of stolen money and influence.

And when Evelyn's pregnancy threatened that control, he began monitoring her.

***

Adrien received the news while sitting in the hospital cafeteria.

Marcus called.

"Daniel's in custody."

Adrien closed his eyes.

"Good."

"Do you want to come down?"

Adrien looked toward the elevator.

Evelyn was upstairs.

His son was upstairs.

For the first time, the choice was simple.

"No."

Marcus hesitated.

"No?"

"Let the investigators handle Daniel."

Adrien stood.

May you like

"I have somewhere more important to be."
