Chapter 15
November brought a deep chill to the air,
and the trees were finally completely bare.
Thanksgiving was fast approaching,
and I had to make a difficult decision.
In the past, we went to my parents' house,
and it was always a miserable experience.
There were arguments over the turkey,
and there were cruel comments about my job.
They always criticized Anna's cooking,
and they made Rosie sit in silence.
I swore I would never go back there,
and I was keeping that important promise.
I decided we would host our own dinner,
and it would be just the two of us.
I asked Rosie what she wanted to eat,
and she gave me a very surprising answer.
She did not want a traditional turkey,
and she did not care about stuffing.
She wanted to eat macaroni and cheese,
and she wanted a giant chocolate cake.
I laughed loudly at her specific request,
and I agreed to the unique menu.
It was our first Thanksgiving alone,
and we could make our own new rules.
We went to the grocery store together,
and we bought all the necessary ingredients.
We bought five kinds of expensive cheese,
and we bought a massive box of pasta.
We spent the entire morning cooking,
and we listened to cheerful holiday music.
Rosie helped me stir the cheese sauce,
and she tasted it with a wooden spoon.
She declared it the best sauce ever,
and she gave me a high five.
We baked the chocolate cake from scratch,
and we covered it in thick frosting.
I set the dining room table with care,
and I used the nice white plates.
I placed a small candle in the center,
and I lit it with a long match.
We sat down at the beautiful table,
and we looked at our unusual feast.
I asked Rosie what she was thankful for,
and she thought about it very carefully.
She said she was thankful for the dinosaur,
and she was thankful for her grandparents.
Then she looked at me with bright eyes,
and she said she was thankful for me.
My throat felt very tight all of a sudden,
and I had to blink away quick tears.
I told her I was thankful for her too,
and I said she was my whole world.
We ate the macaroni and cheese happily,
and we ate huge slices of the cake.
It was the best Thanksgiving of my life,
and there was no stress or anxiety.
May you like
We had broken the cycle of misery,
and we had found our own joy.
