Chapter 2

"Your Honor," I began, my voice clear, resonant, and devoid of any emotion other than absolute cold authority. "The State intends to prove that the defendants, Daniel Vance"—I paused slightly, correcting myself with a sharp edge—"Daniel Brooks and Vanessa Cole, did not merely conspire to commit murder and insurance fraud. They orchestrated an institutional theft of intellectual property worth over forty million dollars, using my own name, my own capital, and my own previous legal career as the ultimate cover."

Gasps rippled through the gallery. Daniel lunged toward his defense attorney, whispering frantically, while his lawyer stood up with an objection trembling on his lips.

"Grounds, Counsel?" Judge Sterling asked lazily, peering over his spectacles.

"Your Honor, this is outside the scope of the original indictment—"

"Oh, it's very much inside the scope," I interrupted, stepping forward and placing a heavy manila folder on the podium. "Because the synthetic paralytic found in my wineglass wasn't just designed to make me sleep forever. It was designed to incapacitate me long enough for Daniel to force my biometric signature on digital asset transfers, signing away my proprietary biotech patents—patents I developed before we were married, which I quietly funded with my own settlement money from my prosecutor days."

The courtroom fell into a dead, absolute silence.

Daniel’s face went from pale grey to a translucent, ghostly white. He clutched the edges of the defense table so hard his knuckles turned purple.

I turned slowly to face the gallery, letting my gaze sweep over the shocked faces of his corporate cronies. "You all thought Daniel Brooks was a corporate prodigy. You thought his meteoric rise at Apex Biosciences was the result of his brilliant leadership. But the truth is, Daniel was drowning in gambling debts and embezzlement liabilities. Three years ago, when we got married, he discovered that my pre-marriage holdings—patents on non-invasive neurological diagnostic tools—were worth tens of millions of dollars. He couldn't access them because they were locked behind a multi-signature biometric vault tied exclusively to my legal identity."

I pulled out a printed transcript and laid it flat on the podium, my eyes locking onto Vanessa.

"So, he hired Vanessa Cole, a disgraced corporate spy with a history of financial forgery, specifically to infiltrate my life, befriend me, and help him engineer my permanent removal. They didn't just want me out of the way for an apartment or a title. They wanted me dead so that Daniel, as my sole surviving spouse, could execute a fraudulent power of attorney, unlock my digital vault, and sell my life’s work to a foreign shell corporation."

Vanessa let out a strangled sob, burying her face in her hands. "It was his idea! He promised me half! He said she was stupid, that she wouldn't even notice!"

"Silence in the courtroom!" Judge Sterling roared, slamming his gavel down. He looked down at Daniel, whose head was now bowed so low it nearly touched the mahogany table. "Mr. Brooks, is there any truth to these allegations, or would you like to speak now before I hand down an immediate motion to expand these charges to federal wire fraud, corporate espionage, and attempted capital murder?"

Daniel didn't look up. He couldn't. The great corporate negotiator, the golden boy of the boardroom, was entirely dismantled. He had underestimated his wife, believing that domestic comfort had dulled the sharpest mind in the district attorney’s office. He had forgotten that a prosecutor never truly stops investigating; she merely waits for the defendant to walk right into her trap.

"No questions, Your Honor," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking completely. "We... we waive our preliminary hearing."

A wave of profound, electric release washed over me. The heavy armor I had worn for the past three months felt light as air. I looked down at my hands—the same hands that had cooked his dinners, ironed his shirts, and comforted him after long days at the office—and then looked across at the shattered remnants of the man who thought he could destroy me.

Judge Sterling looked down from the bench, his expression grave. "Based on the overwhelming digital, forensic, and testimonial evidence presented by the special prosecutor, this court formally denies bail, grants the expansion of federal charges, and orders both defendants remanded to federal custody pending trial. Court is adjourned."

The gavel struck one final, definitive blow.

As the bailiffs moved in behind Daniel and Vanessa, snapping cold steel cuffs around their wrists, I turned and walked slowly back toward the aisle. Detective Vance was waiting for me near the double doors, holding a fresh cup of coffee and a warm, approving smile.

"Well, Counselor," Vance said softly as I reached him, stepping out into the bright, warm afternoon sunlight pouring through the courthouse columns. "That was quite the closing argument. What's next for the most dangerous woman in the state?"
