Chapter 11

Victor never met Serena privately again.

The main confrontation occurred through formal mediation with attorneys present.

Serena looked different.

Her hair had been professionally cut into a short style after Victor shaved the front strip.

Victor did not look at it for long.

Serena noticed.

“Do you feel guilty?”

“Yes.”

The immediate answer unsettled her.

She had expected anger.

“Then why are you doing this to me?”

Victor looked at the financial records.

“Because guilt is not a contract.”

Serena’s eyes filled.

“I loved you.”

“I believe that.”

She stared.

“You believe me?”

“Yes.”

That hurt her more.

Victor continued.

“You loved me and still used Lily.”

Serena looked down.

“I didn’t think you’d do that much.”

“Shave your hair?”

“Yes.”

“I shouldn’t have.”

Serena looked up quickly.

For a second, she seemed to think admission might become negotiation.

Victor continued.

“You also should not have touched her.”

Her face hardened.

“She was going to be fine.”

“She was terrified.”

“It grows back.”

Victor’s expression changed.

“That sentence is why we’re never discussing reconciliation.”

Serena started crying.

Her deeper motive came out gradually.

She had spent years building a respectable events business but never broke into the level of wealth surrounding Victor.

After becoming engaged, everyone suddenly returned her calls.

Designers.

Hotels.

Magazines.

Luxury vendors.

People who once ignored her treated her as powerful.

She became addicted to that access.

Then the wedding turned into the biggest project she had ever controlled.

She started justifying larger commissions.

Then duplicate charges.

Then personal transfers.

She told herself Victor could afford it.

She told herself she was doing real work.

She told herself marriage would make the distinction meaningless later.

When Nora started preserving receipts, Serena realized the numbers would not survive a serious audit.

She panicked.

“Why not just tell me?” Victor asked.

“You would have called it theft.”

“If the numbers supported that.”

“You would have thrown me out.”

“Maybe.”

“There.”

Serena leaned forward.

“You always had the power to end everything.”

Victor looked at her.

“So you tried to create power over me.”

“Yes.”

Finally.

Honest.

Then he asked:

“Why Lily?”

Serena cried harder.

May you like

“Because I knew you’d react.”

That answer ended anything left between them.
