Chapter 14
Eighteen months after the canceled wedding, Serena sent Lily an apology letter through her attorney.
Victor did not give it to her immediately.
He gave it to Lily’s therapist.
The first version was rejected.
It said:
I made a terrible mistake because I was under enormous pressure.
The therapist sent it back with one recommendation:
Remove the explanation.
Serena tried again.
The second letter said:
I grabbed you when you did not want me to.
I cut your hair without permission.
I told you that you would ruin pictures.
I frightened you because I wanted your father to become angry.
I used your fear to try to solve an adult problem I created.
That was wrong.
You did nothing to cause what happened afterward.
Victor read it once.
Then asked the therapist:
“Should she see it?”
“Not my decision alone.”
“Whose?”
“Lily’s, when she is developmentally ready to understand what it is.”
Victor hated waiting.
That was probably useful.
Serena had completed her restitution requirements and remained under legal restrictions connected to the case.
She lived in another state.
Worked for an established event company rather than owning one.
Continued therapy.
She had not attempted to contact Lily directly.
That mattered.
But improvement did not create entitlement.
Nora remained at the Bellandi estate.
Not as Lily’s substitute mother.
Victor had corrected that ambiguity too.
Nora remained a trusted employee and adult in Lily’s life, but professional childcare decisions belonged to Victor and Lily’s caregivers.
Nora received better pay, defined hours, and a real grievance channel outside the Bellandi family.
One evening she told Victor:
“You realize written rules make you less scary.”
Victor looked offended.
“Impossible.”
“They do.”
“I’ll have them rewritten.”
Nora laughed.
The house felt different.
Not softer exactly.
Clearer.
Adults knew what authority they had.

Children knew which adults could be told no.
Victor discovered those two things were closely connected.
