Chapter 2 - The Shocking Revelation in Douglas’s Office and the Web of Deceit That Unraveled Their LivesThe private conference room on the top floor of the hospital’s administrative wing smelled faintly of fresh coffee and old paper. The door clicked shut behind us with a heavy, soundproof thud, sealing out the hum of the medical floor.

Douglas Sterling sat down at the head of the polished oak table, sliding the thick, sealed manila folder across the surface toward me.
Brandon and Lauren had been unceremoniously escorted to an adjacent waiting lounge by hospital security after Lauren suffered a visible panic attack in the hallway, though Brandon had loudly threatened to sue the institution, me, and everyone in between for harassment. He still believed he held all the cards.
“Before you open that, Claire,” Douglas said, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses, “you need to understand the scope of what we uncovered. When you asked me six months ago to quietly audit your ex-husband’s personal accounts and corporate real estate holdings as part of our routine post-divorce asset review, we expected to find hidden bank accounts or offshore tax shelters.”
“And what did you find, Douglas?” I asked quietly, resting my hands on the edge of the table.
Douglas opened the folder, revealing a dense stack of certified bank statements, DNA lab reports, encrypted text message transcripts, and legal adoption records.
“We found a financial pipeline that leads straight to Lauren Barrett,” Douglas explained, flipping to a highlighted page. “Two years before your divorce was finalized—while you were still undergoing grueling fertility treatments and blaming your own body for failing to conceive—Brandon wasn't just having a casual affair with your best friend. They were running a fully funded domestic surrogate arrangement using an exclusive private clinic in Switzerland.”
My breath caught in my throat. The room seemed to tilt slightly.
“A surrogate?” I whispered, the word tasting like ash. “The baby… the little boy in the stroller downstairs…”
“Is Brandon and Lauren’s biological child,” Douglas confirmed grimly. “Conceived using Brandon’s DNA and Lauren’s harvested eggs while you were married. Furthermore, they funded the entire Swiss medical contract, the gestational carrier fees, and Lauren’s upscale downtown penthouse using commingled marital assets—funds that legally belonged to the joint estate you shared with Brandon.”
I stared down at the documents. The dates hit me like physical blows. The exact months I was sitting in sterile clinics crying over negative pregnancy tests, injecting myself with hormones, and apologizing to Brandon for breaking his heart—he and my best friend were secretly engineering a family behind my back, using my own marital money to finance their betrayal.
“They manufactured the narrative that you were the infertile, broken wife,” Douglas continued, his voice laced with professional disgust, “so that when Brandon eventually walked out, public sympathy would fall entirely on him. He could play the noble, grieving husband forced to leave a barren marriage to find happiness elsewhere.”
A cold, razor-sharp fury flooded my veins, burning away every vestige of hurt, doubt, and sorrow I had carried for years. The grief I had held onto for so long evaporated in an instant, replaced by an absolute, unyielding desire for justice.
“They thought they won,” I said softly, lifting my eyes to meet Douglas’s gaze. “They thought they could humiliate me in public, throw my supposed infertility in my face, and walk away scot-free.”
“They couldn’t be more wrong,” Douglas replied, pulling a second set of legal documents from his briefcase. “Because the Swiss surrogate contract contains a fatal clause. Since the conception and gestation were funded using marital assets without your knowledge or written consent under state family law, those funds constitute severe financial dissipation and fraudulent conveyance. Furthermore, because Brandon used corporate dummy accounts to hide the transactions, we are looking at federal wire fraud and perjury during your divorce proceedings.”
I leaned back in my chair, a slow, calculated smile touching my lips. Brandon wanted a war? I was going to give him an annihilation.
“File everything, Douglas,” I instructed, my voice steady and ice-cold. “Freeze every single personal account, corporate asset, and real estate deed held in his name. And draft an emergency motion for asset forfeiture and punitive damages.”

“It will destroy him financially,” Douglas warned.
“Good,” I answered without hesitation. “Let’s go see how much he loves his new family when he doesn't even have a roof over his head.”
