Chapter 3 - The Spectacular Public Collapse and the Ultimate Fall of the Deceitful DuoThirty minutes later, Douglas and I walked into the secure administrative conference room where Brandon and Lauren were waiting.

Lauren looked like a ghost. She was huddled in a corner chair, trembling uncontrollably, her makeup streaked with tears, clutching a glass of water she couldn't manage to drink. Brandon was pacing back and forth across the carpet like a caged tiger, his face flushed with righteous fury.

When the door opened, Brandon whirled around, pointing an accusing finger straight at me.

“Are you out of your insane mind, Claire?!” Brandon roared, his voice echoing off the walls. “Having security block us, dragging us up here like criminals—I am going to sue you into bankruptcy! I am a senior partner at Vanguard Enterprises, and you will—payment, apology, everything—regret this day!”

I walked past him calmly, taking a seat at the head of the table while Douglas placed a thick stack of legal paperwork right in front of Brandon’s chest.

“Shut your mouth, Brandon, and sit down,” I said quietly.

The sheer coldness in my voice startled him into momentary silence. He looked down at the papers, his brow furrowing in confusion. “What is this garbage?”

“That,” Douglas answered smoothly, “is an emergency ex-parte motion for asset freeze, financial restitution, and criminal referral for wire fraud, perjury, and fraudulent conveyance of marital assets.”

Brandon let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. “Fraud? Are you delusional? We’ve been divorced for a year! Any marital claims expired the day the judge signed our decree!”

“Not when concealment and perjury are involved,” Douglas corrected him calmly. “We have certified banking records, Swiss clinic contracts, and DNA lineage reports proving that you and Ms. Barrett conspired to siphon over two million dollars in joint marital funds to finance a surrogate pregnancy while you were still legally married to Ms. Sterling.”

The room plunged into an instantaneous, suffocating silence.

Brandon’s face went from flushed red to chalk-white in less than two seconds. He slowly turned his head to look at Lauren, his eyes bulging in sheer horror. “Lauren… what is he talking about? What did you do?”

Lauren burst into hysterical, broken sobs, burying her face in her hands. “I had to! You told me she would never give you a child! You promised you would leave her!”

“You absolute idiot!” Brandon screamed, lunging forward in a blind rage before hospital security guards instantly stepped between them, pinning his arms to his sides. “You kept records?! You left a paper trail?! Are you completely insane?!”

“The Swiss clinic doesn't operate on loose promises, Mr. Moretti,” Douglas said with chilling professionalism. “Every wire transfer required a verified corporate signature. Your own signature, to be exact, routed through one of your offshore shell companies.”

Brandon collapsed back into his chair, his arrogance completely shattered, replaced by the pathetic, sniveling coward he had always been beneath his expensive suits. He looked up at me, his eyes wide and watery, his voice cracking into a desperate plea.

“Claire… please,” Brandon choked out, sliding his chair slightly forward. “We were married for seven years. We shared a life together. Don't do this to me. We can settle this privately, outside of court. Just name your price—I’ll give you the house, the car, whatever you want—just don’t ruin my career!”

I looked down at the man who had once sworn to protect and cherish me, the man who had mocked my deepest pain in a public hospital hallway just an hour ago to impress his mistress.

“You spent seven years telling me I was broken, Brandon,” I said softly, my voice carrying the weight of a final, unbreakable judgment. “You told me a woman who couldn't bear children was worthless. And yet, the only thing broken in our marriage was your integrity.”

I stood up, smoothing down the front of my white coat.

“The freeze orders are already in effect,” I told Douglas, nodding toward the door. “By the time Mr. Moretti gets back to his office, his corporate credit cards will be declined, his penthouse will be under receivership, and his firm will have received copies of the criminal referral.”

“Understood, Dr. Sterling,” Douglas replied, gathering his files.

As we walked out of the conference room, leaving behind the shattered wreckage of Brandon’s lies and Lauren’s betrayal, I didn't look back once.
