Chapter 4 - They Threatened to Kill the Mafia Boss’s Long-Lost Brother Unless He Handed Over the Single Mother—But Her Dangerous Plan Changed Everything

Nico Barone stared at the photograph until the screen went dark.
Then he unlocked his phone and looked again.
Paul.
Older.
Thinner.
His hair almost entirely gray.
But unmistakably Paul.
His younger brother was alive.
And someone wanted Tessa in exchange for him.
Nico's hand tightened around the phone.
Tessa watched his face.
“What does it say?”
He didn't answer.
“Nico?”
He turned the screen toward her.
She read the message.
BRING TESSA LIND, OR YOUR BROTHER DIES.
For a moment, she couldn't breathe.
Then she looked at him.
“Where?”
Nico shook his head.
“No.”
“Where do they want me?”
“No.”
“Nico—”
“I said no.”
His voice echoed through the hallway.
Tessa flinched.
He immediately lowered it.
“I'm sorry.”
She stared at the photograph.
“That's your brother.”
“Yes.”
“He's alive.”
“Yes.”
“And they want me.”
Nico looked at her.
“They're not getting you.”
Tessa swallowed.
“You don't even know what they're offering.”
“I know exactly what they're offering.”
His voice turned cold.
“They want me to choose between the brother I lost and the woman who's brought my house back to life.”
Tessa felt her chest tighten.
“Nico—”
“And they think I'll sacrifice you.”
He stepped closer.
“They don't know me very well.”
Within twenty minutes, the library had become a command center.
Elena Voss worked at three computers.
Dom Ferraro studied satellite maps.
Marisol Ortiz joined through a secure connection.
Nico stood beside the fireplace.
Tessa sat at the table, staring at the photograph.
The message had arrived through an encrypted number.
There was no location.
No deadline.
Just the threat.
Elena examined the image.
“It's recent.”
“How recent?” Nico asked.
“Within forty-eight hours, probably.”
Dom leaned over her shoulder.
“Can you identify the building?”
“Maybe.”
She enlarged the background.
A window.
A pale green wall.
A metal bed frame.
A narrow strip of coastline.
Tessa leaned closer.
“Wait.”
Elena looked at her.
“What?”
“Zoom in on the window.”
Elena did.
Outside, a white tower stood on a rocky point.
Tessa frowned.
“I've seen that lighthouse.”
Nico turned.
“Where?”
Tessa searched her memory.
Then she remembered.
“Portland. Near the old naval hospital.”
Elena opened a map.
Within seconds, she found a matching structure.
“Cape Elizabeth.”
Dom leaned forward.
“There's an abandoned rehabilitation center nearby.”
Nico's expression hardened.
“Harborlight?”
Elena checked the address.
“Yes.”
Tessa looked at him.
“That's where Paul is.”
Nico stared at the screen.
Then he reached for his phone.
“Get the cars ready.”
Marisol's voice cut through the speakers.
“Absolutely not.”
Nico looked toward the monitor.
“My brother is alive.”
“And whoever sent that photograph expects you to come charging in.”
“Then they won't be disappointed.”
Tessa stood.
“Nico.”
He turned.
“Please listen.”
He stopped.
She approached the table.
“They don't just want you to come. They want you angry. They want you reckless.”
Nico looked away.
“That's my brother.”
“I know.”
“No, Tessa. You don't.”
His voice cracked.
“You don't know what it means to spend six years believing you failed the person who trusted you most.”
Tessa stepped closer.
“I know what it means to think you've failed someone you love.”
Nico looked at her.
She swallowed.
“Every night since Quincy, I lie awake wondering what would have happened if Junie had been standing in the kitchen when those men came through the window.”
Her eyes filled.
“I know what guilt feels like.”
Nico's expression softened.
Tessa reached for his hand.
“But if you rush into that building, they'll kill you before you ever reach Paul.”
He stared at her.
Then slowly, he nodded.
“Tell me what you're thinking.”
Tessa's plan was dangerous.
But it was also the first plan anyone had proposed that did not depend entirely on guns.
The financial records showed that Harborlight Medical Services had received payments every month for six years.
Those payments came from Northstar Children's Foundation.
Northstar was controlled through a network of shell companies.
And those companies were connected to Richard Bellamy.
The lawyer.
The man who had represented both Nico's family and Ray Doyle.
Tessa believed Bellamy was the real architect of the operation.
“He knows where the money went,” she explained.
“He knows who paid for Paul. He knows who approved the transfers. And he knows who benefits if Paul disappears.”
Dom frowned.
“So we grab Bellamy.”
“No.”
Tessa shook her head.
“We make him come to us.”
Elena looked interested.
“How?”
Tessa opened a spreadsheet.
“By threatening the money.”
She pointed to a series of offshore accounts.
“These transfers are scheduled to move tomorrow morning. Nearly fourteen million dollars.”
Nico leaned closer.
“Whose money?”
“That's the interesting part.”
She highlighted the account holder.
“Bellamy's.”
Dom whistled.
Tessa continued.
“If we freeze those funds, Bellamy will panic.”
Marisol spoke from the monitor.
“I can request emergency preservation orders if the evidence supports it.”
“And if he panics,” Tessa said, “he'll contact whoever is holding Paul.”
Nico studied her.
“You want to follow the call.”
“Yes.”
Elena smiled.
“I like her.”
Dom muttered, “Of course you do.”
Nico looked at Tessa.
“It's risky.”
“So is everything else.”
He held her gaze.
Then he nodded.
“Do it.”
By morning, Bellamy's accounts were frozen.
At 9:14 a.m., the lawyer made his first call.
At 9:17, his second.
At 9:22, he left his office carrying a briefcase.
At 9:31, he entered a black sedan.
Elena tracked the vehicle through traffic cameras.
Dom coordinated with a private surveillance team.
Marisol obtained a warrant for Bellamy's financial records.
And Tessa watched the screens, her stomach twisted into knots.
Bellamy drove north.
Past the city.
Past the industrial parks.
Toward the coast.
At 11:08, he entered the grounds of Harborlight Medical Services.
Nico stood.
“There.”
Elena zoomed in.
The building was surrounded by trees.
Two security vehicles stood near the entrance.
A third was parked behind the main structure.
Dom studied the layout.
“Not much cover.”
Marisol spoke.
“I can send a federal tactical team.”
Nico shook his head.
“Whittaker may still have people inside the Bureau.”
“Not this team,” Marisol said.
Nico looked skeptical.
Marisol leaned toward the camera.
“My sister died because someone betrayed her. I'm not making the same mistake.”
For a moment, the two looked at each other.
Then Nico nodded.
“Fine.”
The rescue began at 2:40 p.m.
Tessa remained at the estate with Junie.
Nico traveled with Dom and two security specialists.
Marisol coordinated the federal team from a mobile command vehicle.
Elena monitored communications.
The plan was simple.
The federal team would secure the building.
Nico would remain outside until the site was safe.
Nobody would enter without authorization.
But plans rarely survived contact with desperate men.
At 2:47, the first officers reached the entrance.
At 2:49, the building's security system shut down.
At 2:51, an explosion shattered the rear windows.
Tessa watched the live feed.
“Oh, God.”
Smoke poured from the building.
Dom shouted into his radio.
“Medical team! Now!”
Nico moved toward the entrance.
Dom grabbed his arm.
“Boss!”
“My brother's inside!”
“You go in there, you die!”
Nico pulled free.
Then a figure appeared through the smoke.
A man in a wheelchair.
Pushed by a woman wearing blue medical scrubs.
Paul Barone.
Alive.
Nico stopped.
For one impossible moment, he simply stared.
Paul looked up.
His eyes found Nico.
Then his mouth moved.
“Nicky?”
Nico ran.
He reached the wheelchair just as the woman collapsed from smoke inhalation.
Dom caught her.
Nico dropped to his knees.
He placed both hands on his brother's face.
“Paul?”
Paul smiled weakly.
“Took you long enough.”
Nico made a sound that was half laugh, half sob.
Then he pulled his brother into his arms.
For six years, he had imagined this moment.
He had imagined anger.
Questions.
Accusations.
But when he finally held Paul again, there was only relief.
His brother was warm.
Breathing.
Alive.
Nico buried his face against Paul's shoulder.
“I thought you were dead.”
Paul's voice trembled.
“I know.”
“I should have found you.”
“You couldn't.”
“I should have—”
“Stop.”
Paul gripped his brother's arm.
“You came.”
Nico closed his eyes.
And for the first time in six years, he let himself cry.
Back at the estate, Junie was drawing a picture when Tessa received the call.
Nico's voice was hoarse.
“We have him.”
Tessa covered her mouth.
“Paul?”
“He's alive.”
Tears spilled down her cheeks.
“Oh, thank God.”
Nico was silent for a moment.
Then he said quietly, “You found him.”
“We all did.”
“No.”
His voice softened.
“You did.”
Tessa looked toward Junie.
The little girl was drawing a whale with a crown.
“Is he coming home?”
“Yes.”
“And Nico?”
“Yes?”
Tessa hesitated.
“Come home too.”
A pause.
Then his answer.
“I will.”
Paul arrived at the mansion that evening.
He was exhausted.
His left leg had limited movement, and years of confinement had weakened his body.
But he was alive.
Mrs. Pace burst into tears when she saw him.
Dom embraced him so tightly that Paul complained about his ribs.
And Nico refused to let him out of sight.
Junie approached the wheelchair cautiously.
“Are you Mr. Nico's brother?”
Paul smiled.
“Unfortunately.”
Junie frowned.
“Why unfortunately?”
“Because he's very bossy.”
Junie nodded seriously.
“He is.”
Nico looked offended.
“I'm standing right here.”
Paul grinned.
“See?”
Junie giggled.
Then she held up Captain Blue.
“This is my whale.”
Paul's smile faded.
He stared at the toy.
For a moment, he seemed unable to breathe.
“Where did you get that?”
Junie hugged the whale.
“Mommy bought him when I was little.”
Paul looked at Tessa.
“Where?”
“A shop in Boston,” she answered.
Paul's expression changed.
He looked toward Nico.
“Brother.”
Nico stepped closer.
“What?”
Paul pointed at the whale.
“That toy wasn't chosen by accident.”
Tessa felt cold.
“What do you mean?”
Paul swallowed.
“Whittaker didn't put the first recording device inside it.”
The room went silent.
Paul looked directly at Tessa.
“Your husband did.”
Tessa stared at him.
“My husband?”
Paul nodded.
“Ethan Lind.”
Tessa stumbled backward.
Ethan.
Her husband.
The man who had supposedly died in a construction accident four years earlier.
Paul's voice trembled.
“Tessa, your husband was working with me before he disappeared.”
Nico caught her before she fell.
Paul continued.
“And if I'm right…”
He looked toward the windows.
May you like
“Ethan may still be alive.”
