Chapter 6 - Her Dead Husband Returned With the Woman Who Betrayed the FBI—But the Mafia Boss Refused to Let Them Take Her Daughter

“Ethan?”
Tessa Lind's voice was so faint that Nico Barone barely heard it.
On the security monitor, the man standing outside the iron gates lifted his head.
Four years.
For four years, Tessa had mourned him. She had buried a sealed coffin, sold his truck, packed away his clothes, and taught their daughter to kiss a photograph goodnight.
Now Ethan Lind stood beneath the security cameras, alive.
And beside him was Marisol Ortiz.
The woman who had promised to help them.
The woman whose sister had died protecting Junie.
The woman whose name had appeared beside a two-million-dollar payment in Ethan's secret files.
Tessa pressed one trembling hand against the monitor.
“Ethan, what have you done?”
The screen flickered.
Marisol stepped into view.
“Mrs. Lind, I'm going to make this very simple. Open the gates, surrender the Bluewater archive, and nobody else needs to get hurt.”
Nico reached for the intercom.
“You're trespassing on my property.”
Marisol smiled.
“Mr. Barone. Always so concerned about property.”
“It's a useful concern when strangers arrive with armed men.”
“I'm not a stranger.”
“No,” Nico said. “You're something considerably worse.”
Dom Ferraro moved toward the security panel.
“North perimeter compromised. Three vehicles outside. At least eight armed personnel.”
Elena Voss was already working on her laptop.
“They've jammed our communications, but I can restore the internal network.”
“How long?” Nico asked.
“Longer if everyone keeps asking me questions.”
Junie stood beside Tessa, clutching Captain Blue.
She stared at the monitor.
Then her little face changed.
“Daddy?”
Nobody answered.
Junie took a step forward.
“Mommy, that's Daddy.”
Tessa dropped to her knees.
“Sweetheart—”
“Daddy came back!”
The little girl tried to run toward the door.
Nico caught her gently.
“Junie, wait.”
She struggled.
“That's my daddy!”
“I know.”
“Let me go!”
Nico looked at Tessa.
There was no jealousy in his expression.
Only heartbreak.
Because he understood exactly what the child was feeling.
Hope.
The kind of hope that could destroy a person if it proved false.
Tessa wrapped her arms around Junie.
“Baby, we have to stay inside.”
“But Daddy's outside.”
“I know.”
“Why won't you let him in?”
Tessa had no answer.
Then Ethan's voice came through the speakers.
“Tessa, please. I need to explain.”
Nico pressed the intercom.
“You can explain from there.”
Ethan looked directly into the camera.
“Nico Barone.”
“Ethan Lind.”
“I know what you must think.”
“I doubt that.”
Ethan swallowed.
“I didn't come here to hurt anyone.”
Marisol's smile disappeared.
“Ethan.”
He ignored her.
“Tessa, listen to me. Whittaker told me you were dead.”
The room went silent.
Tessa stared at the screen.
“What?”
Ethan's voice broke.
“He showed me photographs. A burned vehicle. Your identification. He told me you and Junie died because I tried to expose the operation.”
Tessa shook her head.
“No.”
“I believed him.”
“Four years?” she whispered.
Ethan looked devastated.
“For four years.”
Marisol stepped closer.
“That's enough.”
But Ethan continued.
“Three weeks ago, I found out you were alive. I tried to reach you, but they threatened to kill Junie if I contacted you directly.”
Nico watched him carefully.
“Who threatened you?”
Ethan looked toward Marisol.
She raised her pistol.
“Enough.”
Then the first shot rang out.
The security monitor shattered.
Junie screamed.
Nico pulled Tessa and the child behind the reinforced wall.
Dom drew his weapon.
“Everybody down!”
Outside, engines roared.
A vehicle slammed into the estate's outer gate.
The house shook.
Elena looked up from her laptop.
“They're trying to breach the property.”
Nico turned to Dom.
“Get Tessa and Junie to the lower shelter.”
Tessa grabbed his arm.
“No.”
“Tessa—”
“Ethan is out there!”
“And so are people trying to kill us.”
She looked at him, torn between two impossible realities.
Nico softened his voice.
“Your daughter needs you alive.”
That reached her.
Tessa lifted Junie.
The little girl was crying so hard she could barely speak.
“Daddy's going away again.”
Tessa kissed her forehead.
“I don't know, baby.”
Nico knelt beside them.
“Junie, remember our boat?”
She nodded through tears.
“The one with the dragon?”
“Yes.”
“Is it safe?”
“Not finished yet.”
“Then we have to finish it.”
Nico swallowed.
“We will.”
Junie held out her pinkie.
“Promise?”
He linked his finger with hers.
“Promise.”
Then Dom led them into the hidden passage.
Outside the gates, Ethan Lind watched Marisol lower her pistol.
“You shot the camera.”
Marisol turned toward him.
“You were talking too much.”
“You told me I could see my family.”
“And you will.”
“When?”
“When Barone gives us what we came for.”
Ethan stared at her.
“You never intended to let them leave.”
Marisol's expression hardened.
“Don't become sentimental.”
“My daughter is five years old.”
“And she will remain five years old if you keep making stupid decisions.”
Ethan went still.
Marisol stepped closer.
“Remember who kept you alive.”
He looked at the mansion.
Then at the armed men surrounding him.
For four years, he had lived under different names, moved between isolated facilities, and worked on financial systems for people he believed were protecting his family.
He had been told Tessa and Junie were dead.
Now he knew the truth.
He had not been protected.
He had been imprisoned.
And the woman standing beside him had no intention of releasing him.
Ethan slowly raised his hands.
“All right.”
Marisol smiled.
“Good.”
But she did not notice him slipping a small metal object from his sleeve into the gravel.
It was a miniature storage device.
And it contained the one piece of evidence Marisol had spent years trying to destroy.
Inside the mansion, Nico's men secured the eastern entrance.
Dom returned to the library.
“They're holding position.”
“Why?”
“They're waiting for something.”
Nico looked toward the shattered monitor.
“Ethan.”
Dom frowned.
“What about him?”
“He's not acting like a willing accomplice.”
“You trust him?”
“No.”
Nico picked up his phone.
“But I know what a hostage looks like.”
Elena restored a portion of the security feed.
One camera showed Ethan standing near the gates.
His hands were raised.
Marisol was speaking to someone inside a black SUV.
Nico studied the image.
Then he noticed Ethan's shoe.
The man was nudging something across the gravel.
A tiny metallic object.
Nico leaned forward.
“Zoom in.”
Elena enlarged the image.
Dom frowned.
“What is that?”
Nico stared.
“A message.”
In the shelter, Tessa sat beside Junie while Mrs. Pace prepared hot chocolate.
The little girl had stopped crying.
Now she stared at the wall.
“Mommy?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Did Daddy forget us?”
Tessa closed her eyes.
“No, baby.”
“Then why didn't he come home?”
Tessa struggled for words.
“Sometimes grown-ups get trapped in things they don't understand.”
Junie looked down at Captain Blue.
“Like when my whale got a bad voice inside?”
Tessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Junie considered that.
“Maybe Daddy has a bad voice inside too.”
Tessa looked at her daughter.
The simplicity of the observation struck her.
For months, Tessa had believed that truth and lies were separate things.
Good people told the truth.
Bad people lied.
But Ethan had lied because he was frightened.
Whittaker had lied because he was corrupt.
Marisol had lied because she wanted power.
And Nico, a man accused of terrible things, had told Junie more truth than most of the people sworn to protect her.
Tessa pulled her daughter close.
“Maybe you're right.”
At 4:18 a.m., Nico made his decision.
He would not surrender the archive.
He would not hand over Tessa.
And he would not allow Marisol to leave with Ethan.
Instead, he sent Dom through an old maintenance tunnel that opened beyond the estate's northern wall.
The tunnel had been built decades earlier to access a coastal drainage system.
Dom emerged behind a line of pine trees.
From there, he could see the vehicles.
And Ethan.
Dom waited until Marisol entered the SUV.
Then he stepped into view.
Ethan froze.
Dom held one finger to his lips.
He pointed toward the gravel.
Ethan looked down.
The storage device lay near his shoe.
Dom nodded.
Ethan slowly stepped aside.
A few seconds later, Dom retrieved it.
But as he turned to leave, a flashlight swept across the trees.
“Hey!”
A guard shouted.
Dom ran.
Gunfire erupted.
Inside the mansion, Nico heard the shots through his radio.
“Dom?”
Static.
“Dom, report!”
A breathless voice answered.
“Got it.”
“Get back inside.”
“Working on it.”
Then a sharp cry.
The radio went silent.
Nico stared at the device.
For a moment, he was twenty-eight again, standing outside a church and hearing that his brother had been shot.
Another man he loved.
Another man in danger because of him.
He reached for his coat.
Elena stepped in front of him.
“No.”
“Move.”
“Nico, think.”
“Dom is out there.”
“And if you die, who protects Tessa and Junie?”
He stopped.
Elena held his gaze.
“Let the people you trust do their jobs.”
Nico slowly lowered his hand.
It was one of the hardest decisions he had ever made.
Ten minutes later, Dom returned through the maintenance tunnel.
He was bleeding from a wound in his upper arm.
But he was alive.
And he carried the storage device.
Nico met him at the entrance.
“You idiot.”
Dom grinned weakly.
“Nice to see you too.”
Nico caught him before he fell.
“Get the doctor.”
Dom pressed the device into his hand.
“Ethan wanted you to have this.”
Nico looked at it.
Then at his oldest friend.
“Thank you.”
Dom's smile faded.
“You would've done the same.”
Nico shook his head.
“No.”
Dom looked confused.
Nico gripped his shoulder.
“I would've been too angry to think clearly.”
Dom laughed once.
“That's why you keep me around.”
Elena opened the storage device on an isolated computer.
A single folder appeared.
Its name was simple.
JUNIE.
Tessa arrived just as Elena opened it.
Inside were photographs, bank records, and a video message.
Ethan appeared on the screen.
He looked older than in the previous recording.
More frightened.
“If this reaches Nico Barone, please listen carefully.”
Nico leaned forward.
Ethan continued.
“Marisol Ortiz is not running the operation. She's protecting the person who is.”
Tessa felt cold.
“Who?”
Ethan looked directly into the camera.
“The money trail leads to someone inside the Barone family.”
Nico's jaw tightened.
Ethan swallowed.
“And the person responsible for Paul Barone's disappearance is still living inside your house.”
The room went silent.
Nico slowly turned.
Mrs. Pace stood in the doorway.
She had come to tell them Junie was asleep.
Her face was pale.
Ethan's voice continued.
“Her name is Margaret Pace.”
Nico stared at the woman who had raised him.
The woman who had cared for his mother.
The woman who had baked birthday cakes for Paul.
The woman who had lived in his home for forty years.
“Margaret?”
Mrs. Pace closed her eyes.
Then she whispered:
May you like
“I'm so sorry, Nicholas.”
