Chapter 21 - CELINA AND AUDREY

Celina eventually became a better audience member than manager.

That took years.

She sat.

Applauded.

Did not critique in the car unless Audrey asked.

Did not send recordings to relatives without permission.

Did not announce applications.

When Audrey was rejected from one program at fourteen, Celina said:

“I’m sorry.”

Not:

They’re idiots.

Not:

We’ll fix it.

Not:

Try again immediately.

Just:

May you like

“I’m sorry.”

Audrey later told her therapist that was the first rejection she was allowed to own.
