Chapter 3

The sterile,

fluorescent lights of the maximum-security federal penitentiary buzzed constantly,

casting long,

depressing shadows across the gray concrete walls.

Javier Robles sat on his narrow,

uncomfortable metal cot,

staring at the floor with hollow,

bloodshot eyes,

his once-handsome face deeply scarred from the shattered glass table.

He had lost his tailored suits,

his luxury cars,

and his arrogant,

smug demeanor,

replaced entirely by the terrifying reality of his long,

unforgiving prison sentence.

He jumped violently when the heavy iron door of his cell slid open,

revealing the massive,

intimidating frame of a corrupt prison guard,

who stepped inside with a menacing,

cruel smile.

The guard did not speak,

he simply tossed a small,

crumpled piece of paper onto Javier's lap,

and turned around,

locking the heavy door behind him.

Javier unfolded the paper with trembling,

sweaty fingers,

his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird,

as he read the short,

typewritten message.

The message was from El Lobo,

informing him that his mother's assassination attempt had failed,

that the mercenaries had been captured,

and that the cartel was now holding Javier personally responsible for the lost investment.

He felt a cold,

sickening dread wash over his entire body,

realizing that the criminal syndicate did not care about his failed marriage,

they only cared about blood,

and financial restitution.

Javier scrambled to the small,

dirty sink,

splashing freezing water onto his pale face,

desperately trying to think of a way to survive the impending execution.

He decided to make a desperate,

cowardly play,

screaming for the guards,

and demanding an immediate meeting with the federal prosecutors,

promising to testify against the Miami syndicate in exchange for protective custody.

News of Javier's sudden willingness to cooperate leaked out almost instantly,

traveling through the dark,

invisible network of prison communications,

reaching the cartel's internal assassins before the sun had even set.

That evening,

as Javier walked nervously toward the isolated shower block,

hoping to find a moment of peace,

three massive,

heavily tattooed inmates silently blocked the narrow exit.

He tried to run,

he tried to scream for help,

but a sharp,

makeshift blade slipped quietly between his ribs,

puncturing his lung,

and sending him crashing to the wet,

slippery tile floor.

As the life slowly drained from his body,

his vision blurring into darkness,

he thought about the beautiful,

luxurious condo in Uptown Dallas,

and the terrible,

arrogant mistake he had made on his wedding night.

He had thrown away a life of comfort,

he had betrayed a woman who truly loved him,

all for a piece of real estate,

and a mother's toxic greed.

The assassins melted away into the shadows,

leaving Javier completely alone,

a forgotten,

pathetic casualty of a war he was never smart enough to fight.

When the warden finally discovered the body,

he immediately placed a secure,

encrypted call to Agent Sarah Reyes,

informing her that the cartel was actively tying up their loose ends.

Agent Reyes immediately contacted Alexander Vance,

delivering the grim news over a highly secure line,

warning him that the syndicate was purging their liabilities,

and preparing for a massive,

unprecedented counterattack.

Alexander received the news with absolute,

stone-cold indifference,

feeling no pity for the boy who had allowed his daughter to be tortured,

knowing that karma had finally,

brutally balanced the scales.

He disconnected the call,

May you like

turning to the massive digital map projected on his office wall,

ready to launch the next devastating phase of their corporate warfare.
