Chapter 15

Vivian.

I laughed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

I ran my thumb across my name.

For some reason, my eyes filled.

My mother noticed.

She always noticed.

"You okay?"

I nodded.

Then I looked at the tag again.

A gift with my name on it.

Actually meant for me.

Such a small thing.

Such an ordinary thing.

I opened it.

Inside was a bracelet.

Not diamonds.

Silver.

Simple.

My mother immediately looked horrified.

"Oh, sweetheart. I didn't even think—"

I laughed through my tears.

"It's perfect."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

She fastened it around my wrist.

The metal was cool against my skin.

I looked at it for a long time.

Then I thought about the bracelet Sloane had opened.

The black box.

The receipt.

Four numbers hidden beneath a ribbon.

The detail Preston had missed because he had been too busy watching my face.

He had wanted that Christmas night to prove I was replaceable.

Instead, he gave me the first piece of proof that allowed me to see him clearly.

The affair.

The debt.

The forged signatures.

The secret company.

The money.

The lies.

All of it had been there, waiting beneath the surface of our marriage.

The diamonds were only the smallest piece.

For a long time, I hated myself for not seeing sooner.

Eventually, I stopped.

People like Preston depend on that question.

How could you not know?

It shifts shame toward the person who trusted instead of the person who deceived.

I knew what he had shown me.

Until the night he accidentally showed me more.

My mother squeezed my hand.

"What are you thinking about?"

I looked down at the silver bracelet.

Then toward the little Christmas tree blinking unevenly in the corner.

"Last year."

She frowned.

"Do you miss him?"

I considered the question.

"No."

That answer came easily.

"What do you miss?"

I smiled.

"The woman I was before I knew."

My mother touched my cheek.

I covered her hand with mine.

"But I like the woman who found out better."

Outside, snow had begun falling.

Quietly.

Almost exactly like the year before.

But this time I wasn't sitting alone in a car wondering how much of my life was real.

I knew.

My name was Vivian Hart.

I had stopped using Whitmore the day the divorce became final.

And the day Preston underestimated me really was the day he destroyed himself.

Not because I plotted revenge.

Not because I set a trap.

Not because I became crueler than he was.

I simply stopped protecting him from the truth.

That was all it took.

One receipt.

Four numbers.

My name where it never should have been.

And a man so certain I would break when he humiliated me that he never imagined I might look down.

He wanted me watching the diamonds.

Instead, I saw the paper underneath.

And that small difference...

May you like

cost him everything.
