My Husband’s Mistress Received a Gift With My Name on It

Chapter 6
THEME: FONT SIZE: 18pxI thought about the past year.
Preston had complained repeatedly that I was spending too much.
Once over the kitchen renovation.
Once over a charity event.
Once because I'd bought my mother a business-class ticket after her surgery.
"We need to be smarter this year," he'd told me.
"We're not twenty-five anymore."
All while he was borrowing in my name.
I went cold.
He had been training me to doubt my own understanding of our finances.
Every time I asked why he seemed stressed, he said markets were difficult.
Every time I suggested reviewing our accounts together, he kissed my forehead and told me he'd handle it.
And I let him.
Because marriage is built from thousands of ordinary acts of surrender.
Here.
Take the keys.
Remember the password.
Sign this.
Can you pay that?
I'll trust you.
Until one day you discover the person you trusted has been using those small permissions to build a room you cannot escape.
My phone buzzed.
Sloane.
I had never given her my number.
The message contained a photograph.
Her wrist.
My bracelet.
Beneath it:
I know you're angry, but Preston and I aren't going to apologize for loving each other. You deserve honesty, even if you don't like it.
For several seconds I couldn't move.
Then I laughed.
It came out ugly and sharp.
Lena raised an eyebrow.
I handed her the phone.
She read the message.
"Do you want to respond?"
"No."
"Good."
Another message arrived.
He was going to tell you after the holidays. Last night just forced things sooner.
My laughter stopped.
I read that sentence again.
He was going to tell me after the holidays.
So there had been a plan.
I typed one question.
How long have you two been together?
Lena started to object.
I held up a hand.
Sloane replied almost immediately.
Nine months.
Nine months.
The secret company had existed for seventeen.
The fraud had begun fourteen months earlier.
Whatever Preston had done, the affair came later.
Sloane believed she knew the story.
She didn't.
Neither had I.
I put down the phone.
"What now?" I asked.
Lena closed the folder.
"Now we find out what P.W. Strategic Holdings was for."
I looked at the receipt one last time.
The diamonds had been meant to humiliate me.
Instead, Preston had handed me a map.
And somewhere at the end of it was the truth he had been hiding long before Sloane ever entered my marriage.
PART 3: THE LIFE HE WAS BUILDING BEHIND MINE
Preston came to the hotel on December twenty-seventh.
I had not told him where I was staying.
That frightened me.
The front desk called at 8:03 in the morning.
"Mrs. Whitmore, there's a gentleman downstairs asking for you."
I was sitting beside the window drinking coffee.
"What gentleman?"
"Your husband."
Of course.
Preston knew people everywhere.
Or he knew which cards I used.
That possibility made my skin crawl.
"Tell him I'm not receiving visitors."
There was a pause.
"Certainly."
Five minutes later, my phone rang.
I answered this time.
"How did you find me?"
He didn't bother pretending.
"You used the Amex."
Of course.
A joint account.
Stupid.
"Vivian, come downstairs."
"No."
"Don't do this."
I almost smiled.
"Do what?"
"This."
His voice sharpened.
"Disappear. Freeze accounts. Ignore me."
So he knew.
Not everything.
But enough.
"Which account are you worried about, Preston?"
Silence.
It lasted less than two seconds.
Still enough.
"What does that mean?"
"You tell me."
"Vivian."
The way he said my name had changed.
No longer irritated.
Careful.
I stood and walked toward the desk where my files were spread out.
"Why did you buy Sloane's bracelet on a credit card in my name?"
Nothing.
Not even breathing.
There it was.
The first real crack.
When Preston answered, his voice was lower.
"Come downstairs."
"No."
"It's not what you think."
"Then explain it."
"It's complicated."
"Fraud usually is."
"Don't use words you don't understand."
I stared at the phone.
For eight years, Preston had been very good at making certainty feel like ignorance.
He could take a question and return it to me as a flaw.
Why are you late?
You're being insecure.
Why didn't you tell me Sloane would be there?
You're imagining things.
Why are these numbers different?
You don't understand how the account is structured.
But once you see the trick, the magic disappears.
"I understand the word fraud," I said.
"Vivian, you signed those applications."
"No. I didn't."
"Yes, you did."
"Then you won't mind investigators checking."
His breath caught.
Small.
Almost silent.
But I heard it.
"You called the bank?"
"I called several."
"Jesus Christ."
Not I'm innocent.
Not there must be a mistake.
Jesus Christ.
May you like
"You had no right to freeze anything without speaking to me."
I laughed once.
