Chapter 3 - The Fall of the Don

The grand primary suite of the Moretti penthouse turned into a federal crime scene in less than ten minutes.
Two federal marshals stepped into the room, their hands resting on their sidearms, while four additional agents secured the hallway. Vanessa shrieked in terror as an agent clicked heavy steel handcuffs around her manicured wrists, citing her as a primary co-conspirator in federal wire fraud and illegal money laundering.
"Blake! Help me! Don't let them take me!" Vanessa screamed as she was dragged out of the master suite, her silk robe dragging against the marble floor, her expensive blonde facade completely destroyed.
Blake didn't even look at her as she was led away. He stood perfectly still in the center of the room, staring at me as an agent read him his Miranda rights.
"Amelia," Blake said, his voice dropping into a low, desperate rasp as the agent handcuffed his wrists behind his back. "You have to tell them those accounts were a mistake. You have to tell them you authorized those transfers."
I looked at the man I had loved for eleven years. I looked at his tattooed chest, his sharp jawline, and the cold, arrogant eyes that had once commanded my total devotion.
"I didn't authorize a single cent, Blake," I said softly, my voice filled with an unshakeable, peaceful finality. "You dragged me out of my bed for your mistress. Now you can sleep in a federal cell for her."
"Amelia! Please!" Blake shouted as the agents began steering him toward the doorway. "I did it for the family! I did it to keep the syndicate afloat!"
"You did it because you were greedy, Blake," Chloe called out, holding up the manila folder. "And because you thought your wife was too stupid to notice when her own life was being stolen."
Marco, the underboss who had served the Moretti family for twenty years, stepped up beside me as Blake was led down the hall.
"Mrs. Moretti," Marco said, bowing his head slightly in genuine respect. "The syndicate board has been informed of Don Blake's unauthorized use of legitimate corporate entities. Effective immediately, the Moretti family is severing all ties to Blake. The penthouse, the personal accounts, and the commercial assets under your name remain entirely yours. No one from our organization will ever bother you again."
I looked at Marco, offering him a firm, quiet nod. "Thank you, Marco."
"You are a far stronger woman than he ever deserved, ma'am," Marco added softly before turning to follow the federal agents down the stairs.
When the noise finally faded and the penthouse fell silent, Chloe walked over to my side, wrapping her arm around my trembling shoulders.
I collapsed onto the velvet armchair in the corner of the room, placing my face in my hands as heavy, uncontrollable tears finally spilled over my eyelashes. They weren't tears of heartbreak for Blake—they were tears of immense, overwhelming relief.
The toxic web of lies, fear, and emotional manipulation that had suffocated my life for eleven years had finally been torn apart in a single night.
"Are you okay, Amelia?" Chloe asked gently, kneeling beside my chair.

I looked up at my sister, wiping my tears away, feeling a sudden, brilliant warmth blooming inside my chest.
"I'm better than okay, Chloe," I whispered, a genuine smile breaking across my face for the first time in years. "I'm free."
