Chapter 4 - The Phoenix Rises

Six months later.
The morning sun streamed brilliantly through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of my brand-new flagship design studio in Soho, Manhattan. The air smelled rich with fresh espresso, polished oak, and luxury textiles.
I stood before a large drafting table, wearing a sleek burgundy silk suit, my hair styled in elegant, confident waves, reviewing blue-tinted architectural schematics for a fifty-million-dollar luxury hotel project in Dubai.
Over the past six months, my life had transformed beyond my wildest dreams.
After Blake's arrest, the federal government had completely cleared Amelia Moretti Design Holdings of any criminal wrongdoing, recognizing that I was the primary victim of corporate fraud. Every single dollar of the frozen four point five million was fully restored to my business accounts, along with a massive financial restitution settlement paid out from Blake's seized personal assets.
I had officially dropped the name Moretti, reclaiming my maiden name—Amelia Vance.
Blake had been convicted in federal court three weeks ago on multiple counts of wire fraud, racketeering, and illegal financial laundering. He was sentenced to twenty-two years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Deprived of his wealth, his muscle, and his syndicate title, the former feared Don of New York was now just another inmate wearing a faded orange jumpsuit.
Vanessa had fared no better. To avoid a ten-year prison sentence, she had signed a full confession testifying against Blake, which resulted in her receiving five years of federal probation, complete financial ruin, and total banishment from New York's professional and social circles. She was currently working as an entry-level receptionist at a car rental agency in New Jersey, living in a tiny studio apartment.
Suddenly, the glass double doors of my studio pushed open, and Chloe walked in holding a massive bouquet of yellow roses and two champagne flutes.
"Happy Anniversary of your official independence day, CEO Vance!" Chloe cheered proudly, setting the flowers on my desk.
I laughed warmly, stepping around the drafting table to hug my sister. "Thank you, Chloe. I couldn't have done any of this without you."
"You did the hard part, Amelia," Chloe said softly, pouring chilled champagne into the flutes. "You had the courage to turn that door handle six months ago."
As we clinked our glasses together, my studio manager, Sarah, walked over with a subtle, excited smile on her face.
"Miss Vance," Sarah said softly. "Your eleven o'clock appointment has arrived. He's waiting in the private lounge."
I glanced at my watch, raising an eyebrow. "My eleven o'clock? I thought the Dubai developers weren't coming until two?"
"This isn't the Dubai team," Sarah murmured, her eyes sparkling with quiet delight. "It's Mr. Gabriel Thorne."
My heart gave a pleasant, fluttering leap against my ribs.
Gabriel Thorne was a brilliant, forty-year-old international architectural developer who had bought out Blake's former commercial real estate portfolio during the federal liquidation sales. Over the past four months, Gabriel and I had worked shoulder-to-shoulder transforming those former mob-controlled properties into vibrant, sustainable community spaces across New York.
He was tall, broad-shouldered, with silver-dusted dark hair, a sharp jawline, and warm brown eyes that looked at me with an intensity of deep, unyielding respect and genuine affection.
"Go on," Chloe nudged me with a smirk, taking my champagne glass. "Don't keep the most handsome developer in Manhattan waiting."
I smoothed down my silk suit and walked into the glass-walled private lounge.
Gabriel stood near the window, looking out at the city skyline, wearing an immaculate navy linen suit. When he heard my heels clicking against the hardwood floor, he turned around, his face lighting up with a warm, breathtaking smile that instantly erased every lingering ghost of my past.
"Good morning, Amelia," Gabriel said softly, his deep voice rich and welcoming.
"Good morning, Gabriel," I replied, stepping toward him. "Sarah said you had something urgent to discuss regarding the SoHo library project?"
Gabriel reached into his blazer pocket, but instead of pulling out architectural blueprints, he pulled out a small, exquisite velvet box.
My breath caught lightly in my throat.
Gabriel walked over, stopping right in front of me, his warm, steady eyes locking onto mine with an absolute devotion I had never known existed.
"The SoHo library project is moving perfectly, Amelia," Gabriel murmured gently, opening the velvet box to reveal a magnificent, flawless yellow diamond ring set in polished platinum. "I came here today for a completely different contract."
He looked into my eyes, his tone rich with profound sincerity. "For four months, I've watched you rebuild your life with absolute strength, brilliant talent, and unbreakable grace. You are the most extraordinary woman I've ever met. I'm not offering you a cage, Amelia. I'm offering you a partner who will stand beside you, respect your power, and love you for the rest of my life. Will you build a future with me?"
Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness welled in my eyes, spilling down my glowing cheeks. I didn't flinch. I didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes," I whispered, my voice clear and strong. "Yes, Gabriel. Absolutely yes."
Gabriel smiled radiantly, sliding the yellow diamond ring onto my finger. He pulled me into his broad, warm arms and kissed me deeply—a sweet, passionate, breathtaking kiss that sealed my new life forever.
