Chapter 4

The contents of the diary were explosive,

detailing exact dates,

financial transactions,

and secret meetings held in the Varrick mansion.

I spent three sleepless nights transcribing the pages,

building a digital archive,

and cross-referencing the names with current public records.

The mayor had built his entire re-election campaign on a platform of reform,

claiming to be the man who helped take down the Varricks,

but Adrian's notes proved otherwise.

The mayor had been on Jonathan Varrick's payroll for a decade,

accepting massive bribes in offshore accounts,

and burying evidence of the family's crimes.

I needed an ally I could trust completely,

someone outside the local jurisdiction,

so I called Agent Vance.

He was the federal agent who had arrested Celeste,

a man with sharp eyes,

and an unyielding sense of justice.

We met at a quiet diner outside the city limits,

sitting in a back booth,

drinking terrible coffee under flickering neon lights.

I slid a encrypted flash drive across the table,

watching his expression change,

as I explained what Adrian had left behind.

Vance listened without interrupting,

his jaw tight,

and his fingers drumming a slow rhythm on the edge of his ceramic mug.

When I finished,

he pocketed the drive,

and warned me that going after the mayor would put a target on my back.

I told him I was already a target,

and that hiding was no longer an option for me.

Vance agreed to quietly open a federal probe,

using the diary as a roadmap,

but he insisted I hire personal security immediately.

I returned to Adrian House that evening,

feeling the heavy burden of the secret I carried,

and noticing a strange black sedan parked across the street.

The windows were heavily tinted,

and the engine was running,

blowing thin clouds of white exhaust into the freezing air.

I did not look directly at the car,

keeping my pace steady,

and walking straight into the brightly lit lobby of the refuge.

The security guards locked the heavy glass doors behind me,

but I could feel the invisible weight of unseen eyes,

watching my every move from the darkness.

They knew I had received a package from Evelyn,

and they knew what her son had written,

which meant the countdown to a confrontation had officially started.

I sat in my office,

May you like

watching the black sedan drive away slowly,

and I made a silent promise to finish what Adrian started.
