Chapter 6

The safe deposit box was located in a private bank downtown,

an institution famous for its absolute discretion,

and its wealthy,

morally ambiguous clientele.

I could not walk in there myself,

because the mayor's people were watching me constantly,

tracking my movements through the city.

I needed someone entirely invisible,

someone who did not exist in the public eye,

and I found that person in a former resident of Adrian House.

Her name was Elena,

a brilliant woman who had escaped a violent corporate marriage,

and who possessed a natural talent for social engineering.

I explained the extreme danger of the mission,

offering her a chance to walk away,

but Elena insisted she wanted to help tear down the men who enabled abusers.

We spent two days forging the necessary corporate documents,

creating a flawless alias for Elena,

and rehearsing every detail of the bank's security protocols.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon,

Elena walked into the marble lobby of the bank,

wearing a tailored designer suit,

and carrying a briefcase filled with forged identification papers.

I waited three blocks away in an unmarked van,

listening to the audio feed from the hidden microphone in her lapel,

my heart pounding violently against my ribs.

The bank manager was initially suspicious,

asking pointed questions about the corporate account,

but Elena answered with cold,

arrogant confidence,

perfectly mimicking the tone of elite privilege.

The manager finally relented,

leading her down into the subterranean vault,

where rows of steel boxes lined the walls like metal coffins.

I held my breath as she turned the key,

listening to the sharp click of the lock,

and the squeak of the hinges as the small metal door opened.

Elena whispered that the tapes were inside,

along with a stack of handwritten ledgers,

and she quickly transferred the evidence into her briefcase.

She walked out of the bank ten minutes later,

stepping into the pouring rain,

and making her way to our designated extraction point.

When she climbed into the back of the van,

she was shaking uncontrollably,

but she handed me the briefcase with a triumphant smile.

We drove straight to the federal building,

bypassing local law enforcement entirely,

and delivered the evidence directly into the hands of Agent Vance.

He looked at the tapes,

his eyes widening in disbelief,

and he told me that the mayor's political career was officially over.

I looked out the window at the dark city,

May you like

knowing that a massive storm was about to break,

and feeling ready to face the thunder.
