Chapter 16 - The Reflection in the Glass

Thorne Global’s cybersecurity team worked from the security office beneath the hospital.
Marcus sat beside them.
Khloe watched remotely from her room.
The reflection was only visible for eleven frames.
Eleven frames became everything.
The app interface was identified.
An encrypted corporate messaging service called Meridian Vault.
Damian had insisted senior directors use it for confidential acquisitions.
Marcus knew immediately where the archive lived.
“Thorne Global maintains compliance backups.”
The cybersecurity director shook his head.
“Only for company accounts.”
“Damian’s personal account was registered through the corporate license.”
The director stared at him.
Then started typing.
At 12:42 p.m., they found it.
Damian had deleted his local messages.
He had not deleted the compliance mirror.
There were hundreds.
Messages to Isabella.
Messages to Elaine.
Messages to private investigators.
Messages to board directors.
Messages about Khloe.
One from seven months earlier read.
THE PREGNANCY ACCELERATES EVERYTHING.
Another.
KEEP MARCUS DISTRACTED.
Another.
IF ROSSI CANNOT BREAK THEM, WE MOVE TO THE VEHICLE OPTION.
Khloe felt cold.
Marcus looked physically ill.
Then they found the message reflected in the broken glass.
DO IT NOW. SHE’S ALONE.
It had been sent one minute before Isabella entered the suite.
The message after it was even worse.
REMEMBER, FEAR IS ENOUGH. DO NOT LEAVE MARKS.
Sebastian gave a humorless laugh.
“He ordered intimidation and thinks that saves him from the assault.”
Khloe shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
“He knew she was entering the suite.”
“He ordered the confrontation.”
“He may claim he never ordered violence.”
“But he cannot claim he didn’t create the danger.”
Marcus looked toward the archive.
“Keep searching.”
They did.
At 1:16 p.m., they found the missing piece.
A conversation between Damian and a user identified only as E.M.
Evelyn Mercer.
Marcus’s mother.
Damian.
THE GIRL WILL CONTROL THE TRUST.
Evelyn.
KHLOE DOESN’T KNOW ABOUT THE CLAUSE.
Damian.
GOOD. KEEP IT THAT WAY.
Evelyn.
YOU PROMISED MARCUS WOULD NOT BE HURT.
Damian.
MARCUS HURT HIMSELF THE MOMENT HE TOUCHED ROSSI.
Marcus stopped reading.
Khloe watched his face.
The next messages were months newer.
Evelyn.
I WON’T HELP YOU HURT KHLOE.
Damian.
THEN YOUR SON LEARNS YOU’RE ALIVE.
Evelyn.
HE SHOULD.
Damian.
AND HE LEARNS WHY YOU DISAPPEARED.
No response.
Then one final message.
Evelyn.
I SAVED EVERYTHING.
Sebastian leaned toward the screen.
“Where?”
Nobody knew.
Marcus stared at the words.
Then suddenly he remembered something.
“My mother used to hide important documents in one place.”
Khloe looked at him.
“Where?”
Marcus stood.
“Our old house.”
“The Thorne estate?”
“It’s been empty for years.”
Sebastian grabbed his jacket.
“Then we go now.”
Police teams reached the estate twenty minutes later.
Marcus entered his childhood study with Detective Ortiz.
Dust covered everything.
The old desk remained near the window.
Marcus walked to a built-in bookshelf.
He removed an antique copy of The Count of Monte Cristo.
Behind it was a small steel panel.
A childhood hiding place.
He entered a six-digit code.
The panel opened.
Inside was a flash drive.
And one handwritten note.
MARCUS, IF YOU FIND THIS, I AM SORRY I LET FEAR KEEP ME AWAY.
Marcus’s hands trembled.
Detective Ortiz took the drive.
The files contained years of financial records.
Bank accounts.
Shell companies.
Bribes.
Illegal surveillance payments.
And a full plan labeled.
SUCCESSION CONTROL.
Damian Thorne had documented everything.
But the most important file was a video.
Evelyn Thorne appeared on screen.
She looked older.
Tired.
Terrified.
“My name is Evelyn Thorne.”
“If you are watching this, my brother-in-law Damian has probably discovered that I intend to expose him.”
Marcus stopped breathing.

The woman everyone believed dead looked directly into the camera.
And began telling the truth.
